LOCATION, DATES AND ACCOMODATION
From monday 4 to sunday 10 it was held the II Woman-Referee Campus. After the last year good
experience, we carry on with the same idea. This year’s edition Campus was located in Bayona
(Pontevedra). Bayona is a wonderful town spotted in the west coast of Galicia, in the so-called Rías
baixas.
Meals, rest and main convivence were in Camping Bayona Playa, were the whole group was divided
into 5, occuping each group one bungalow (left picture).
As you can see in the right picture, there were no distance between bugalows and the beach. The
camping was sorrounded by them. Many beaches that all participants enjoyed, because hard-work
and pleasure is possible. What a remarkable landscape we had during these days, perhaps
enchanted by the Meigas witches…
You’ll find in the pictures below a general view of Bayona in a map and then on satellite.
Understand now why we choose Bayona?
Theoretical lessons as well as lectures were held in the Bayona’s town hall. We appreciate the
support of the institution and we must say it’s also part of this big success.

It was an unforgettable experience, the rest day we
organized a trip to Cíes Islands by boat. Although the
weather was cloudy, we took the opportunity to enjoy
one of the most beautiful scenarios you could ever
contemplate. Here we add some pictures of the event:

PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION
1. PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR REFEREES
The aim of this Technical Referees Committee (CTA) is to keep during the year what we can call
“continuing-education”. There are some Referee Training Programme per year, for example: Pre-
season Courses (September), Spanish Championship (January), Spanish Club Championship – Final
stages (April-May); Cangas del Narcea tournament and Corrales de Buelna tournament (young
referee selection), etc. There are physicall and theoretical test in all courses.
A week before the Campus the big part of the CTA (Rodrigo Costas, Jesús Pedrido, Ramon Iniesta,
Vicente Breto, Tono Huelin) were in a Referee Training Programme Course in Granollers. Ramón
Gallego (PRC/IHF) lead the course due to all his past experiences there with GRTP courses.
Two couples who worked in Granollers were also appointed to Woman-Referee Campus, so they
could keep imroving their skills. Each couple whistled at least one period of 15 minutes per day.
Matches categories were from 14 to 18 years old women and men. In every match there was an
observer from CTA who took notes of their performance. In addition, all couples (sometimes we
had to mix some referees) were in touch with theirselves by headset communication kits. After the
match, the observer gave them positive remarks and general advices to improve. It was kind of
homework to do for the next matches, obervers focused on every couple weaknesses and looked if
there was enough work from match to match to solve that matters.
Every morning after the matchday, observers did a general dibriefing at Bayona’s town hall talking
about main topics to improve and, most important, suggestions how to do it. The meetings were
opened to opinions from referees, other CTA members and of course EHF Lecturer António Goulao,
who supervised all matches.

2.PHYSICAL TRAINING
Course objectives:
• To think about the importance of the physical aspect in the decision-making process
• To think about the consequences of having an inappropriate individual physical contidion
• To consider the consequences of having a disparity physical condition between the partners
• To know the physical level of each participant
• To know how to make a good warm-up before the match
• To use breathing techniques as a tool to increase our calm and concentration
• To use body language and eye-contact to improve our refereeing performances
• To make correct movements and positioning to never get lost and be focused on the game
Warm-Up:
We’ll make a regular warm-up for the very first day of the Campus. We’ll manage to get an
optimum activity condition. We’ll use breathing techniques to avoid nerves and pressure (if arises)
before and during the game. Learn how to get the first eye-contact and the correct body language
since the momment we leave the locker room (for example the court entrance protocol –
supervised by CTA members who we’ll give them the guidelines).
Warm-up stages
• Every single referee makes his own routine
• To be aware why being well-dressed is so important
• Breathing techniques inside the locker room to increase calm and concentration
• Joint mobility
• Entrance protocol
• Continuous running (10-20’) depending on the participants
• Short sprints (20-40 mts)
• Stretching
• Since we enter the court, we cannot lose anything it’s happening there, special focus on
movements in/outside the court, and turns (never lose the “action”).
II WOMAN-REFEREE CAMPUS 2011 – RFEBM/EHF
18
Tiredness – decision-making Test protocol:
• Warm-up: we’ll do the same process as the past days (breathing, joint mobility, continous
running, sprints and stretching).
• Continous running 15’ (jogging ryhtm) sorrounding the court. Every 2 laps, 20 meters sprint.
• Video-test: the whole group is divided into 4. In a stand-up position, referees judge video-
clips and write the correct answers in an individual sheet. Video-test is no longer than 4
minutes. No replays allowed.
• Repetition of the second point: continous runnig + sprints
• Repetition of the third point: 4 minutes video-test
• 15’ rest
• Repetition of the whole process (excepting the warm-up)
General thoughts to discuss altogether
• How does tiredness impact the decision-making process
• We are women officiating men matches, what does it mean?
• External pressure and noise influence
• How does routine help us?
• How does we plan the next season?
• Optimum beat-rate during training sessions
We recorded all “tiredness – decision-making” test (left). Referees doing fitness exercises (right)

SPAIN: LEADING COUNTRY IN WOMEN REFEREEING
There was a woman in Spain who opened the door for all these new upcoming women-referees:
María Cristina Fernández Piñeiro (Vincios, Gondomar, 1963). She was the first woman to climb Elite
status in Spain. Moreover, she was not only Elite in Spain but also at international stages. The
pinnacle of her career at European level was to referee the Women’s Champions League Final
return-leg in 2004. Danish Slagelse FH beat Krim Ljubljana from Slovenia 32-36. Along his partner
Ángel Pablo Permuy Villanueva, also from Galicia, they officiated many important matches at top
level. Now Pablo is an EHF Lecturer and delegate in European competitions since he decided to
resign in 2006 a year before the mandatory age limit (nowadays that 50 years-old-restriction is no
longer applied).
On the left, Pablo and Cristina in his very first international
experience in Anadía (Portugal) on Latin Cup.
On the right, spanish goalkeeper José Javier Hombrados brings a special gift to Cristina prior the
Spanish Supercup. That was Cristina’s last match as a referee. She retired years before the limit
because of her new job.
There were 14 woman referees in national categories in the past season. We are glad to say that
next season will be some woman-referee promotions, they’re doing an awesome job!

FUTURE: CONCLUSIONS AND COOPERATION WITH EHF
Both Royal Spanish Handball Federation and Spanish Technical Referees Committee are willing to
cooperate very actively with European Handball Federation. One of our objectives is to organize a
Woman-Referee Campus at European level. This year’s experience was remarkable, we thought we
did a great job and ejoyed a very close teamwork with EHF lecturers António Goulao and Carlos
Garcia.
The referee panel was very excited when they knew the possibility to receive lectures from former
top european coaches/referees. They are used to work with CTA members as long as former
spanish Elite referees, but the Campus was their first touch with high-level instructors from abroad.
We had no problem with language, António and Carlos spoke very well spanish, but the challenge
for next years is to do all-english Campus.
Apart from lecturers, it would be perfect to do an exchange programme with other european
federations, but the only problem would be lack of money resources. Before the Campus,
cooperation between EHF and RFEBM was fantastic, but in future activities we would thank a lot
some collaboration in that field.
Could you imagine Campus 2012 with three EHF lecturers from Portugal, France and Germany for
example? And in the referee pool five spanish couples and five from different european countries?
That is our aim for further Campus editions, not easy, but we pretend to deliver the best education
to our referees as well as new personal experiences that for sure will help them to grow both as a
person and as a referee.
RFEBM wants to keep working in the same direction that EHF does, following our philosofy and
methods but taking the best opportunities to bring our refereeing crew what they deserve.

II Woman-Referee Campus team is proud to say that we all fulfilled the main three purposes in the
referees life: WORK, LEARN and ENJOY.
