Immaculate Heart of Mary Homeschool Conference
Dr. Catherine Moranholds a Ph.D. in Education from Breyer State University and is a mother of 5 with over 20 years experience homeschooling. She was the President of the Catholic Home School Network of America and a founder of the Ohio Educators’ Catholic Home Schooling Network. She specializes in learning disabilities.
Fr. Joseph Mary Brownwas born in Bardstown, KY, the third of seven children. He graduated from Christendom College and joined the Congregation of St. John. He was ordained in 1997 and currently serves as superior of a novitiate house in Princeville, IL.
Mary Ellen Barrettis the mother of 8 and a homeschool veteran. She is a columnist for The Long Island Catholic and chronicles the journey of living a faithful, but imperfect, Catholic family life on her weblog; Tales From the Bonny Blue House.
Melissa Savageis the mother of 6 and began homeschooling after realizing the public school system would not work for her oldest, Thomas. Melissa was reluctant to homeschool because she thought she lacked what it would take to accomplish the task. As it turns out, God has given her what she needed at every stage.
Dr. Ray Guarendiis the father of 10 children, many of whom have been homeschooled. He is a clinical psychologist, author, and public speaker. His radio show, “The Doctor Is In,” can be heard weekdays on ETWN Radio. Dr. Ray’s national television show, “Living Right With Dr. Ray,” is entering its 4th season.
Dr. Bill Thierfelderis currently the President of Belmont Abbey College. He is a former NCAA Division I Coach and National Track and Field Champion. His Master’s and Doctoral Degrees are in Sports Psychology and Human Movement. He was the director of a sports representation firm with clients in the NFL, MLB, and NBA.

Jesus tells us clearly that only those who are like little children will enter the Heavenly Kingdom. What is humility and this childlike littleness that Our Lord so strongly enjoins upon us? Why is so important? Is there any hope for me, a poor proud sinner?

An atmosphere of love, learning, and levity can change the whole game in your homeschool. Mary Ellen will share tips on how to create an atmosphere that encourages discipline, enjoyment, love of faith and family, in which the children will come to love learning.
4:00 - 4:20 P.M. Melissa Savage
Navigating the world of homeschooling can be tough if you don’t have a partner to help you through it. We can easily get discouraged if we feel alone. How can you find your battle buddy? How is the relationship supposed to work? How can you find buddies for your children?
4:30 - 4:50 P.M. Dr. Catherine Moran What causes teacher burnout and how to avoid it is something every homeschooling mom needs to know. Keeping your enthusiasm and initial joy in teaching your children is very important. This presentation will discuss the pitfalls and tips for staying positive and on track in your role as parent and teacher.
5:00 - 5:45 P.M. Dr. Bill Thierfelder
Learn why play and sport are essential to who you are as a person. Listen to fascinating stories about incredible athletes who exhibited virtue under the most difficult circumstances. Jesus Christ has commanded us to love one another as He loves us. How do I incarnate this commandment of love in my family life, workplace, and everyday activities? What does it mean to love as Jesus loves? These and other questions on fraternal charity in the home and the world will be addressed.
11:00 - 11:45 A.M. Dr. Ray Guarendi
Anyone who works with children today is having his confidence, peace of mind, and authority undercut by widespread myths of “experts” and the media. Dr. Ray identifies several of the most pervasive of these myths, and helps moms and dads realize they are better parents and teachers than they might think.
1:30 - 1:50 P.M. Mary Ellen Barrett
Most young children are not wired to sit still and bring a great deal of thought to school work; they would really rather be tearing around the house and the yard, and would be happy to never crack open a book. Mrs. Barrett will give some tips on how to use your child’s learning style to contain the fidgets and get the work done peacefully.

Taking on new projects and volunteering can be great, but we always need to keep in mind that our time and energy are precious. As homeschooling parents, our families have a prior claim. Are you wearing too many hats? How can we get everything done that is important to us?
2:30 - 3:15 P.M. Dr. Ray Guarendi Are you angry? Why? How does your anger impact the other members of your family? Dr. Ray cuts through the psychobabble to present a realistic picture of anger and other emotional issues, and then offers practical solutions for overcoming them.
