Introduction
In colon cancer•Symptomatic presentation is a known poor prognostic factor•ER presentation = symptomatic presentation•Advanced disease?•Complicated stay?•Worse outcomes?
What is the magnitude of this effect?
Methods
• Colon cancer surgeries at MGH (2004-2011: n=1071)
ER presentation
+ necessary to admit
+ DDx: colon cancer
+ operated on within that admission
+ colon cancer on PA
= Emergency admission (n=102)
Conclusions
ER admission for colon cancer:•Worse stage•More complications, perioperative death.
Stage-independent effect on survival:•Aggressive tumor biology?•Worse lifestyle?•Access to care?•Health literacy?Quintessential high risk population
