What is Reading?
The ability to take meaning from print.
Reading is taught to children by:
Reading Out Loud To Them• When stories are read to children, the adult points
to words and says them out loud. • Children learn the sounds of words and how words
are used to express a thought in a sentence.
Giving children time to look at and read pictures in books everyday
Children have opportunities to look at pictures in books and describe what they see.

Doing Story Retelling Activities
• Teachers provide activities which allow children to use pictures to retell a story that has been read to them in class.

• The child sits next to the teacher so that they can see what the teacher is writing.
Children learn how reading and writing happen when they see that what they say can be can be written down and read to them.
