MR DAVE FLEMING
Innovation Connections Facilitator for the Newcastle, The Greater Hunter and Central Coast region of NSW.
Role is to connect local companies with the technical expertise and state-of-the-art equipment available from publicly funded research organisations. These connections can then lead to collaborative R&D projects to help companies develop their commercial innovations with the support of the research organisation.
Has spent the past 13 years working in a technology transfer and research business development role for the University of Newcastle through the R&D company Newcastle Innovation Ltd.
Also has worked in the private sector, undertaking business development and business management roles for multinational and local companies.

Innovation Connections – Key Points
• Grant application and approval is an easy, web-based process with minimal effort required from research organisations or the company in order to proceed (can take around 4 – 8 weeks to start a project)
• Minimum legal review is required by the research organisation (UoN has a template agreement already approved)
• IP arrangements are handled in a pragmatic way to assist both researchers and companies achieve what they need from the Project
• End of project reporting is a simple templated two page “tick box” requirement for the researcher and the company to complete.
![Page 15: INNOVATION WITH · My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042208/5eab4f1208852a0e49023aa6/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

Research ExpertiseMy principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems to the mining and minerals processing industries is immense. In a global sense, hundreds of billions of tonnes of bulk materials are transported by belt conveyors each year to transport bulk materials, such as coal, iron ore, bauxite and grain, over distances ranging from several metres to tens of kilometres.

DOCTOR DAVID BRADNEY School of Engineering [Mechanical Engineering]
Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment
Completed PhD in Mechanical Engineering - focused on simulation and measured performance of wind turbines in turbulent environments.
Expertise lies in simulation using Finite Element modelling (FEA), computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Mechanical design.
PhD evolved extensive experimental work with numerous data accusation systems.
![Page 27: INNOVATION WITH · My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042208/5eab4f1208852a0e49023aa6/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
How I got involved with Innovation connections: At the completion of my PhD there was the opportunity to
be involved in an Innovation Connection project with Melvelle Equipment Corporation to design a new ‘narrow rail tensor’
![Page 28: INNOVATION WITH · My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042208/5eab4f1208852a0e49023aa6/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Completing a PhD doesn’t allow for much opportunity to think beyond the PhD
Being involved with an Innovation Connections project allowed me time to transition to ‘life after the PhD’.
What I got out of Innovation Connections
![Page 29: INNOVATION WITH · My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042208/5eab4f1208852a0e49023aa6/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
What I got out of Innovation ConnectionsAn opportunity to utilise my skills in a challenging and
interesting industrial project.
Provided an excellent pathway to transition from my PhD.
Provided an opportunity to work on the project half the time, allowing me to lecture (in Mechanical Design), and write research papers from my PhD during the remaining time.
![Page 30: INNOVATION WITH · My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042208/5eab4f1208852a0e49023aa6/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
What I got out of Innovation ConnectionsI was lecturing in courses in Mechanical Design and
Advanced Computer aided engineering – both of which tied in well with Innovations Connection project
Many of the topics of was teaching, I was also applying in parallel with the Innovations Connections project, which allowed me to provide greater depth to my teaching.
![Page 31: INNOVATION WITH · My principal research interests involve the transportation and handling of bulk materials using belt conveyor systems. The importance of belt conveying systems](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042208/5eab4f1208852a0e49023aa6/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Where am I nowI enjoyed re-engaging with industry and am now working
for TUNRA Bulk Solids consulting directly with Industry.
The skills developed through the Innovation Connections project provided a great stepping stone to my current working environment.
