Although they turn in their activity reports under the name Stream Team 57, they are
better known as the Southwest Missouri Fly Fishers (SMFF), based in Springfi eld and affi liated with the Southern Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF). As you would expect, being number 57 in what is rapidly approaching 4,000 Stream Teams means that SMFF has been an active participant in the Stream Team program almost from its inception. Crane Creek enjoys a special status with SMFF due to the naturally-reproducing, genetically-pure strain of McCloud River rainbow trout that it supports, so it has received the most attention from ST57. With rare exception, SMFF has gathered its forces to meet at the Wire Road Conservation Area every Superbowl Sunday to conduct a litter pickup at Crane Creek. When the Wire Road Conservation Area (WRCA) was fi rst purchased by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), the Team members provided many hours of labor planting seedling trees to help re-establish
a healthy riparian zone along the pasture land bordering Crane Creek. In more recent years, members have obtained Volunteer Water Quality training and have been monitoring Crane Creek in the fall and spring. Due to the low to no base fl ow in the upper reaches of the creek, they conduct their monitoring activities in the lower WRCA downstream from the City of Crane at Grisham Ford. In 2007 and 2008, SMFF applied for and received conservation grants from the Southern Council of FFF. In 2007, they purchased 1,500 seedling trees and other supplies and partnered with the James River Basin Partnership, Greene County, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Ozarks Greenways and other Stream Teams for a planting along Ward Branch. This tributary of the James River was the focus for a major bank stabilization and creek restoration effort. In 2008, Team 57 purchased trees along with other supplies and partnered with the City of Crane, MDC, Missouri Department of Transportion, and two Division of Youth Services residential homes to stabilize creek banks and remediate erosion/siltation in Crane City Park. They planted 36 fi ve- to six-foot trees and worked to improve nearby areas experiencing erosion. Stream Team 57 is a great example of a Team that started early on and is still going strong! Congratulations on all your accomplishments and keep up the good work . . . Crane Creek is counting on it!

The Value ofThe Value ofSummer InternshipsSummer Internships
Continued on page 3
. . . some of our . . .
On June 16, we took Blake, our summer intern, to Grant’s Farm for the day. No, we
weren’t there to goof off and see the animals. We went there to teach the Anheuser-Busch summer interns about water quality monitoring. As I watched the young people who participated that day, I thought about the wealth of experience all of them were gaining in just one afternoon. What a great opportunity to try something new! It was plain to see that some of these young adults were experiencing nature for the very fi rst time, while others were seasoned veterans. For that one brief moment in time they were face to face with the natural world, exploring, experiencing, and gaining a new sense of value. They asked questions and made observations as they picked critters off the kick nets and tried to identify them. Later that week, Blake and I went to Climax Springs to help some new volunteers monitor for the fi rst time. We did visual survey, sampled macroinvertebrates, did some chemical testing, and ate a picnic lunch on the river bank. On the way home, Blake noted that it had been his best day of work . . . ever! It’s hard to know how far the ripples will spread from experiences gained during a summer internship. It’s like trying on a new hat. Sometimes the hat fi ts and becomes yours for life. Other times you fi nd it’s not the one for you, and you move on to another choice. However it works out, I’m glad they are getting the chance to try my job on for size. I think it’s the best job . . . ever!
World Water Monitoring DayIs Here Again! Is Here Again!World Water Monitoring
Day is an international education and outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by engaging citizens to conduct basic monitoring of their local water bodies. This year’s World Water Monitoring Day is September 18, and the target dates for data collection are from September 18 – October 18. Missouri has participated the last few years by encouraging Stream Teams to monitor during the targeted time frame. 170 Environmental Science students from Osage High School performed water quality tests at Lake of the Ozarks and on Bollinger Creek. What a way to get kids out and enjoying Missouri Streams.
Team 313
Look what Missouri River Relief (Team 1875) found in addition to trash at their Yankton, South Dakota cleanup!
Missouri Smallmouth Alliance helped reclaim a canoe launch at Sappington Bridge Access by shoveling 30 wheelbarrow loads of gravel back to the parking lot, as well as cleaning up lots of other debris left from fl ood waters at Sappington Bridge, Sand Ford, and Red Horse Accesses. Great work!
Team 509
The Schwaller family planted 75 trees and collected 9 bags of trash on the Osage River between Wardsville and Taos.Team 743
Burr Oak Creek Stream Families planted 150 trees in the Burr Oak Creek Riparian corridor to help an area that had been disturbed to create a service road across the creek. Well done!
Team 1256
John England and his students from Lincoln Intermediate School encountered their fi rst stonefl y nymphs when they conducted a macro-invertebrate count at Syenite Access on the St. Francis River.
Team 1421
Ronnie McIntyre is truly dedicated to his stream by picking up trash three times a week on Hubble Creek after he had noticed an increase of litter with a new school building in the area. That’s dedication.
Team 1569
Monofi lament bins have been installed at Macks Creek and Tunnel Dam on the Little Niangua thanks to the Camden County Creekers.Team 2949
Team 1192 from Brittany Hills Middle
School planted trees on the Blue River in
Jackson County.
The kids at Rohan Woods School in St. Louis have been hard at work. They held litter pickups on Shady Grove Creek as well as removed fi ve truck loads of honeysuckle and winter creeper vines that were choking out trees, followed by planting native shrubs and trees along the banks.
Team 2790
Tom Arth and the Ozark Master Naturalists are helping to spread the word about water quality. They held a Stream Days event where 5th–7th grade students from Dora participated in Water Quality Monitoring on the North Fork of the White River. Thanks for spreading the good word.
Team 2958
Wal-Mart Market 265 could have built their own car with the items from their last litter pickup on the Missouri River. Some of their more interesting items included: half a boat, dog house, six 55-gallon drums, 50 tires, two car gas tanks, a muffl er, and a car fender.

WAL-MART WAL-MART Keeps Giving, and Giving, Keeps Giving, and Giving,
and Giving . . .and Giving . . .By Sherry Fischer & Mark Van PattenStream Team Biologists
In our last issue of Channels, we proudly announced the generosity
of a Wal-Mart program allowing for employee involvement in local community Stream Team projects. Not only are the Teams accomplishing great things, but corporate Wal-Mart contributes cash to the employees’
favorite cause. Well, we’re happy to report that the generosity is continuing! Stream Team Biologists Sherry Fischer and Mark Van Patten were recently presented with an additional $3,000.00 from Kansas City Wal-Mart stores and $5,000.00 from St. Louis area stores. Thank you Wal-Mart! This funding will help support the program by providing supplies and equipment for Stream Teams throughout the state!
