Luxury buyers in warmer climates may be tempted to go the other way, replicating their interior living space outside. In a stunning Boca Raton estate referred to in the magazine, an elaborate poolside terrace and illuminated floor-to-ceiling windows provide a dramatic setting to relax or entertain, and seamlessly connects to the interior through multiple glass doors.
Comfort and style are very much back in vogue but are more individualized than ever before. That’s what you may call freedom of expression, I suppose. Given enough money to make it happen, homebuyers want to put their mark, their signature, on the design. Five years after “C-Day” (C as in “crash”), the wealthy are now happy, daring and proud to live their lives the way they see fit, hence this explosion of style being seen in new construction in the affluent zip codes, coast to coast.
Kitchens are no exception to the “style revival.” In another magazine article, Camilla McLaughlin explains that even though the “wow factor” is subdued, new trends change the way we interact with almost every facet of our kitchens. The emphasis, today, is on function as much as aesthetics. Contemporary is “in” big time. Designers present at the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in New Orleans, remarked that shades of grey from silvery driftwood to steely slate are trending up from 9% a few years ago to 55% now. Other tech innovations focus on entertainment, says McLaughlin. Television sets find their way into islands and/or cabinets. LG electronics came up with a refrigerator that delivers hi-definition TV via digital tuner and a 15 inch screen on the door. On the same note, a Siemens multi-ventilation hood can include a 17 inch LCD screen for TV or DVD. I don’t know whether life, as a result, is getting better or worse, but it is definitely more complicated these days to design your dream home!
