l 25% de lasempresas es-pañolas utilizael software li-bre, especial-mente tecnolo-gía Linux, se-gún se des-prende de unestudio realiza-do por la com-pañía Andago.
El software libre y su aban-derado Linux no sólo sonuna alternativa a los pro-gramas comerciales en elterreno empresarial o dela Administración, tambiénen el educativo. Y la UEMse suma a esta opción conla creación del Grupo deusuarios de Linux y soft-ware libre de la Universi-dad Europea de Madrid(GLUEM).
El objetivo del GLUEMes difundir la filosofía delsoftware libre en general,mediante la organizaciónde actividades y charlas yla creación de proyectosde documentación en elámbito de nuestra univer-sidad y de Linux, en con-creto, como abanderadodel sistema libre.
Su fundador y presi-dente, Alejandro MorenoLópez, es alumno de 3ºde Ingeniería Informática,y comparte responsabili-dades con sus compañe-ros: Ravi Daswani (vice-presidente), Ignacio Ro-dríguez Díaz (tesorero) yAlfonso Vilchez de las He-ras (secretario).
Alejandro Moreno hadiseñado la página webwww.gluem.org que pre-tende ser el nexo de uniónpara las iniciativas del gru-po, tanto actividades co-mo labores de documen-tación. Además, la web tie-ne una lista de correo don-de se pueden enviar lasdudas sobre Linux.
GLUEM cuenta ya con60 suscriptores, en su ma-yoría estudiantes y do-centes de la Escuela Su-perior Politécnica (Infor-mática, Telecomunicacióne Industriales). Con ellostrabajan, codo con codo,los profesores de Ingenie-ría Informática: José Ma-ría Gómez Hidalgo, JuanJosé Escribano Otero yRaúl Murciano Quejido.
El requisito para for-mar parte de este grupode usuarios es estudiar otrabajar en la UEM.

Hoy en día, muchos compramos enlas así llamadas "grandes superfi-cies". Por supuesto, es más cómo-do. Aquí están los zumos, y dos pa-sos más allá las lavadoras. Mete-mos la compra semanal en el carri-to, y a la caja a pagar. No todos losdías compramos una lavadora, pe-ro muchas veces lo hacemos de pa-so. Y así, de paso, puede que has-ta compremos un ordenador, o sim-plemente un programa. Los programas tam-bién están cómodamente empaquetados ydescansan sobre las estanterías de nuestragran superficie favorita. Y los programas sonimprescindibles para que nuestro ordenadorfuncione.
Cuando compras un producto software,te entregan una caja que contiene varios CD-ROMs, un manual, y una licencia de uso.Una advertencia: debemos examinar esa li-cencia, al igual que examinamos la com-posición del zumo. Las licencias de los pro-gramas que compramos son una lectura in-teresante. Por ejemplo, en la licencia de unpopular sistema operativo podemos obser-var que no hemos comprado un producto,sino el derecho a usarlo. Tus CD-ROMs yano son tuyos, y tu manual tampoco. Es algoque se puede aceptar; conceptos como elleasing y el renting están ya consolidadosy pueden ser rentables para su usuario.
Pero leamos unas líneas más abajo, ynos encontraremos generalmente con pá-rrafos como el siguiente: "No hay responsa-bilidad por daños emergentes. (...) ni el fa-bricante (...) se responsabilizará de daños(incluyendo, entre otros, daños directos o in-directos por lesiones a las personas, lucro
cesante, interrupción de actividadcomercial, pérdida de informacióncomercial o cualquier otra pérdidapecuniaria) que se derive del uso(... de) este producto". Es decir, pa-gas por usar un producto que, sise utiliza conforme a sus instruc-ciones, puede tener errores y pro-ducir daños, por ejemplo, que pier-das tus facturas o el listado de tusclientes. Esto sí me produce una
leve sensación de incomodidad.Desde hace años, muchos hemos oído
hablar de Linux, ese programa gratuito tancomplicado que está destinado tan sólo agurús de la informática. Pero los que nos de-dicamos a la informática, sabemos algunascosas más. Por ejemplo, que Linux ya no estan complicado, y que salvo excepcionesocasionales, es tan fácil de instalar y usarcomo otros productos comerciales. Tambiénsabemos que Linux no es gratis, sino libre.Libre quiere decir que tenemos libre dispo-sición de su código fuente, es decir, de susentresijos, y que podemos modificarlo anuestro antojo para cubrir nuestras necesi-dades (si no las cubre ya, algo dudoso pueses muy probable que lo haga mejor que otrosprogramas, y sea más estable y seguro). Pe-ro además es gratis. Y también sabemosque Linux no es el único programa libre; elservidor web más usado en el mundo esApache, que también es software libre. Y haymuchos más, incluyendo una "suite" ofimá-tica que cubre a la perfección el cien por ciende las necesidades de los usuarios de or-denador caseros.
Linux es gratis. Lo puedes encontrar enla estantería de tu gran superficie, pero mu-
cho más barato que otros porque sólo te co-bran por los CD-ROMs, el manual y la ca-ja. O lo puedes descargar de Internet (asípagas el tiempo de conexión). En su licen-cia tampoco hay garantías, pero es que esgratis o casi. ¿Quieres garantías? Pues pa-ga por un soporte técnico, por un servicio deinstalación o por un curso de formación. Lomismo que los programas más comerciales,mejor llamados "propietarios". En los que,por cierto, pagas dos veces; una por usarlo,y otra para garantizar que funciona.
¿Qué ocurre si tu lavadora se estropea?Si ha sido por culpa del fabricante, te la re-paran o te dan una nueva, y están obligadosa pagar los daños por inundación a tu veci-no. Está incluido en la garantía. ¿Y qué ocu-rre si tus valiosos datos de clientes se pier-den? Si no has pagado por la garantía (esdecir, el soporte técnico), mala suerte. Pe-ro si ya has pagado por el uso del programaque falló, peor aún. A lo mejor, recuperas eldinero que pagaste por el uso del programa,y gracias.
Por ello, si te dan algo gratis y no se res-ponsabilizan de los posibles daños, es acep-table. Pero si pagas, y a veces a precio deoro, a mí me parece que te pueden estar en-gañando. Yo prefiero no comprar esa lava-dora. Y además, prefiero elegir a quien ledoy mi dinero para que se encargue de ase-gurarme que mi lavadora gratis funciona. Porcierto, es fácil que funcione mejor que la queme salía a precio de oro. Una cuestión deelección y de ética.

El Grupo de usuariosde Linux y software librede la UEM (GLUEM)está desarrollando ac-tualmente el GLUEM-MAP (Mapa GLUEM),una guía interactiva so-bre el sistema operati-vo Linux, que trata defacilitar la migración delos usuarios de Win-dows hacia Linux par-tiendo de sus necesi-dades y sabiendo deantemano el tipo de in-formación que deseanrecibir. Está previsto
que este proyecto, diri-gido por Juan José Es-cribano –profesor delDepartamento de Pro-gramación e Ingenieríadel Software–, se pon-ga en marcha el próxi-mo curso académico.
Además, GLUEMgestiona su posible par-ticipación en la Sema-na de la Ciencia (orga-nizada por el Ministeriode Ciencia y Tecnolo-gía), en la que podríadar alguna conferenciasobre software libre.
