STANDING ON SOLID GROUND WITH SOLIDWORKSHughHerr,ProfessorofMITMediaLabandco-directoroftheMITCenterforExtremeBionics;FounderofBionX,Inc.,hadbothlegsamputatedfromjustunderthekneeaftersufferingfromfrostbiteduringamountainclimbingaccidentintheearly1980s.Hepointedoutthesurgicalprocedurethatdoctorsperformedfollowinghisaccidenthadnotchangedsincethelate1800s.Asaresult,althoughhecouldwalkagainwiththehelpofhisfirstset
ofprosthetics,hewasunabletoassociatethefeelingofpressureormovementinhisanklesorfeet.Withbothpantlegsrolleduptoexposehisbioniclimbshestated,“Fromthekneedown,mylegsareabunchofnutsandbolts.”Hetheninformedusthatinadditiontothenutsandboltsaresensors,andanentirebionicecosystemthatgiveshimtheabilitytomove,walk,jumpandpivotnaturally.Whilebeingabletoadjusthisheightwasanovelbenefitofhisearlierprosthetics,hedidnothavetheabilitytomovenaturally.HerrbegantomergebiologyandbionicdesignusingSOLIDWORKS(a3DScomputer-aideddesign

SCIENCE AND DIGITAL HEALTH IN THE AGE OF DISRUPTIONAmeetNathwani,ChiefDigitalandMedicalOfficeratSanofiofferedhisperspectiveondigitalhealth.“Thereisaconvergenceofbiological,engineeringandphysicalsciencestoenhanceandpersonalizehealthcare,”commentedNathwani.Healsodiscussedwhatheconsidersarethefivedigitalhealthconvergentfactors:
1. Thecurrentcostofhealthcareisinthetrillions;leavinggovernmentsstruggling.Tomeetdemands,thecompaniesmustdevelopbetter,cheaperandmoreeffectivewaystodeliverbetteroutcomes.
2. Drugsformanydiseasesareonlypartofthesolution.Technologycanamplifyoutcomes(adherence,postmarketsurveillance,etc.)
3. Physicianswanttousetechnologytoimproveoutcomesandareprescribingappstoassistwithtreatingpatients(digitaltherapeutics).
4. Theuseofbigdataandartificialintelligence(AI)tounderstandandpredictdiseasesbyregulators.
