How does your body get energy to do what you want to do?
What kind of energy do we get
from these resources? How?
Burning releases energyBurning releases energy
Do these
contain
energy?
Whoa!
That’s a lot of energy!
•Well, is there energy in the snack?
•How do you know? What evidence do you have?
How can we
measure how much
heat energy is released by one
Cheeto?
Form an aluminum cup by CAREFULLY
molding the aluminum-foil
square around the vial
Squeeze the ring and
insert the ends into the binder clip.
Slide the ring over the dowel.
Open the clip and clamp it on the dowel about 10 cm above the
base
Put the “cup” in the holder and place the bottom of the
cup about 1.5-2 cm
above the Cheeto
Pour 20 mL of water into your “cup” and record the starting temperature
GOGGLEGOGGLE UPUP and let’s begin!
Record the temperature of the water
after the Cheeto stops
burning.

• What evidence do we have that food has energy?
• Why do people eat food?
• Is water food?• Where do people get
energy besides food?• What units do people
use to measure the energy in food?
Calories• Unit used to measure
heat• One calorie is the
amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 mL of water 1 º C
How many calories of
heat did your burning Cheeto
transfer to your water?
Calorie Calculations
• To determine calories, multiply the change in temperature (T) by the volume of water (V) used
T x V = caloriesT = 58ºC - 12 ºC = 46 ºC • Calories = 46 ºC x 20 mL = 920 calories
