UAV SURVEYS
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), is an aircraft without a human pilot aboardIt is commonly known as a drone and referred to as a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)It can also be autonomous i.e. with no ground-based pilot, just following a pre-defined flight path.

defined flight path.
Multi-rotor wing droneFixed-wing drone
TYPES OF UAV
Long-Range Fixed Wing - heavy payload, ground pilot - frequently weaponized – military
Short-Range Fixed Wing - can carry camera payload but much shorter distances
Short-Range Multi Rotor - mini helicopters carrying cameras.

Short-Range Multi Rotor - mini helicopters carrying cameras.
BENEFITS OF UAVs
Quick Turnaround Quick to deploy Semi-automated processing of
results Easy publishing of results Photogrammetric outputs
Safe Lightweight units - little risk to humans Battery operated - no risk of
explosions/fuel fires Autonomous - can ‘fly home’ if contact
lost Will land safely if error detected Can fly over inaccessible areas
Copyright of RSK
Short-Range Solutions 1 Hour Flying Time Approx. 2 km2 area surveyed
per flight 5cm to 1m ground resolution 20cm Ground Accuracies with
control 2m Accuracy without control
Can fly over inaccessible areas Unexploded munitions Environmentally sensitive sites Inaccessible sites - Oil Lakes
BENEFITS OF UAVs
Cheap equipment Can have multiple units Can replace parts cheaply Simple to operate Low cost of training Can train non-specialist users (engineers)

SENSORS AND OUTPUTS
• GPS - For location of camera• INU - For attitude information• Camera - For multiple overlapping imagery• Near Infra Red - For vegetation surveys• LIDAR - Just becoming available• Hyperspectral - Almost there

Soon:LIDAR Point CloudsDigital Terrain Models
DISADVANTAGES
Not as accurate as Ground Survey Cannot provide cost-effective coverage of larger areas Fixed wing is still the best way to survey large areas Cannot support heavy sensors High accuracy GPS/INU, LIDAR, etc

PERMISSIONS NEEDED FOR UAVs
Europe and USA beginning to get legal framework agreement for commercial use of UAV’s
Framework still to be established in Iraq
UAV’s have been used in Middle East with local
