HOUSEThe main house is one of the example of vernacular archi-tecture. The fusion of western and eastern architectural ele-ments into the design creates a unique and interesting ap-pearance.

HISTORICALCHANGES

Most parts of the building were conserved and re-stored after the new own-er of the house moved in. However, the colour scheme of the building has changed over the dec-ades to suit Tze Chi’s logo

ARC WINDOW AIR HOLES STILTSThe semi-circular clerestory provides better ventilation and additional lighting to the interior space of the house.

Ventilation grilles and joint on the wall provide efficient ventilation, which allows good ventilation to the interior and cools down the house effectively

Stilts, also known as footings help to raise the building above ground level, which catches the wind of higher velocity.

Embellishments create a visual interest as well as providing good ventilation and reduces glare.

ANJUNGAn ‘Anjung’, is an additional structure protruding from the ‘Serambi’ (main house), which forms another hipped roof, built at the same elevation as the main house.

INTERIORMAIN

HOUSEThe main hall, also known as the common room of the main house was once a liv-ing room area but is now a gathering space for social and charity events, as well as religious activities.

ENTRANCE The grand entrance of the main building is beautiful in its simplicity. From afar, one can even sense an inviting feeling from the front fa-cade of the building.

STAIRCASEThe steel staircase, as a connection between the main building and extended storage space at the back house. This space exudes a rustic feel to it.

The storage room connected to the main building. The room is semi lit and musty due to the compiling of dust.

LEVELGROUND

The space under the house is used as a stor-age area today, but was used as a working area or for rearing animals in the past.

EXTENDEDHOUSE

The House was extended in the 50’s . Both external and internal walls were rendered with lime plaster prior to lime-wash painting of pale yellow color.

HOUSEThe Chinese Influenced air holes allowing faint light and shadow to be cast into the room. A light breeze sipping through leaving one feeling calm and cool.

WINDOW Jalousie window was one of the most popular designed glass win-dows used for homes in that era.

Recycling as part of the activities in Tze Chi Soci-ety. Old folks work as vol-unteers to segregate the recyclable items. .

KITCHENSPACED

The open spaced kitchen area is placed near to the courtyard. Charity events are often held. Hence, the open spaced kitchen is perfect for heavy preparation of food. It has ample supply of natural light and fresh air. .
