Page 10: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

We need to respond to changes.

Whilst people pushed the boundaries,

Page 17: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

The hardware evolved steadily,

Page 18: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Until in 2007, the iPhone arrived.

Page 19: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

So, what are the capabilities of these new devices?

Page 20: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Is it practical to design for all of these breakpoints?

Page 21: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Making assumptions is tricky?

Page 22: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

We can’t squeeze it all in.

Page 23: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

I think it’s the law that all university web people have to use this slide.

Page 24: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Why don’t we look at a University site?

Page 25: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Perhaps this one?

Page 26: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

How does a homepage reflect the organisation?

Page 27: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

‘Moses said’ is a powerful force.

Page 28: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

In commercial world money is strong constraint,

Page 29: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

in education, politics is an additional one.

Page 30: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Designers and developers can’t just be artists.

Page 31: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Selling the work has to be part of it.(Read ‘Design is a Job’)

Page 32: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

It’s a good thing we can’t pour it all in.

Page 33: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Applying ‘app’ thinking might help.

Page 34: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Our audiences are wanting more services via web and mobile.

Page 35: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Like the rest of their lives.

Page 36: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

People are coming into our sites from social media,

Page 37: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

and mobile apps.

Page 38: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

So we needed to react quickly.

Page 39: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Our main site has about 100 people viewing most of the time.

Page 40: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

We have 100+ sites,

Page 41: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

and 100+ editors.

Page 42: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Hard to focus on a site that keeps growing.

and the external audience,

Page 46: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

So the tanker takes a while to turn.

Page 47: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

We’ve used various frameworks over the years, and have now settled on Twitter Bootstrap.

Page 48: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Hoping to make it easier for our content people,

Page 49: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

And free us up to make it less Bootstrapish.

Page 50: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

We are aware that frameworks are not ideal for content.

Page 51: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Realistically, we are still wrestling with what we have.

Page 52: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Mobile is making us rethink lots.

Page 53: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

We have to embrace the ‘responsive’ desk.

Page 54: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

Which might be like this,

Page 55: Is your thinking L-shaped? Kevin Mears

or this.
