Notre Dame to the rescue!!! The SSJG Heritage Centre has several

relics and certificates of authenticity as

part of the archival collection. The

challenge is to match them as all

certificates are entirely in Latin, some

dating back to 1890. Enter Matthew Hill - Campus Minister at

the University of Notre Dame, Broome

Campus. He put the Heritage Centre in

contact with Paolo Sala, a lecturer in

Latin at Notre Dame University

Fremantle Campus. Paolo had soon

completed translations and the

certificates were able to be accurately

matched with relics.

In religious context, a relic

refers to the physical

remains or personal effects

of a saint, kept by the

devoted for veneration as a

tangible memorial.

The visit to the Sisters of St John of God

Heritage Centre in Broome has helped in

showing us a part of our family’s past that

we have never seen before.

The work that is being done at this centre

has a value that can’t be measured. So

many family from the Kimberleys have

been touched by the sisters and the work

done, to see photos of my grandmother,

other family members and most

importantly my mother, this experience

was very moving for me and then being

able to share this with my wife and

children has even made it so special.

Thank you for the care and keeping of this

history.

The above was sent by email after this

family visited to gain information about

their family’s links with Bungarun.

This relic relates to Sts Francis

Xavier and Ignatius Loyola.

The relevance to SSJG is that St

Francis Xavier was the Province

name of the Kimberley Sisters prior

to amalgamation in 1969.
