My Communion Prayer
Dear God,
I know that You give me many gifts.
The gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ in Holy Communion is the
greatest of all.
How can I ever thank You enough for this special gift?
As I become more like Him, please continue to help me.
Show me the places and ways that I can bring Your love,
kindness, and peace to others....
in my family,
in my neighborhood,
in my community,
with my friends.
Amen
First Holy Communion
Last Sunday the Year 4 children celebrated their First Eucharist, or as it was known when I was a child, First
Communion. Why do we use such big words and what do they mean? We use such words because we are trying to
capture a great mystery in our human language: that God wants to be present to us, supporting and helping us to
live deep and fruitful lives. We struggle to get our heads around this so we have been given the Sacraments, ritual
actions and words, that offer us the mystery in ways we may be able to understand.
We feel communion with people close to us and with whom we feel at ease having a common bond. By offering
himself to us under the form of body and blood, with the look of bread and wine, Jesus is telling us how much he
wants to be part of our daily lives, sustaining us with himself. Eucharist comes from the Greek word for Thanksgiving.
In receiving the Eucharist we affirm our thanks and praise to God, for having Jesus come to live with us in our lives.
Eucharist is an incredible gift and the amazing thing about the gift is that it can be unwrapped time and time again
in our lives and the lives of our children. Each new unwrapping gives us the opportunity to gain a better
understanding of what the gift actually is. For us, who have so many distractions in life, we might sometimes forget
about God, forget about the Eucharist, forget to pray each day and forget to attend Mass. The First Eucharist day
for a family member, can be a time of renewal for all family members, perhaps a time to unwrap the gift again and
discover an understanding that is truly relevant to where we are in life.
Thank you to each of you as parents for continuing your child’s faith journey that began the day you brought your
child to the Church to be baptised. Thank you to each of the teachers, led ably by Jenny Lefebvre (RE Leader) who
2
have journeyed with your children and helped them prepare for First Holy Communion. We are also blessed to have
Fr John who makes connections so well for our children and is a true shepherd to his flock. I pray that our New
Communicants have had a very memorable experience celebrating their First Eucharist last Sunday. Please continue
to pray for these children as they continue to develop their faith journey.
Regards
Brian Martin
