of the Torah: And they stood under the mountain (Shemos 19:17). Since it is impossible to be

under a mountain, unless one digs a tunnel underneath it, Rashiexplains the ord under tomean at the bottom of the mountain. Seemingly not satisfied ith this explanation though,

Rashi brings don a Gemara hich understands that Bnei Yisrael ere literally under the

mountain, and this as achieved by Hashem lifting the mountain up above their heads andcoercing them to accept the Torahor ris! being flattened by the mountain. So says the Gemara

in Shabbos (88a): "And they stood under the mountain." Rav v!imi Bar "hama Bar "hasa

said, this teaches us that #Hashem$ held the mountain over them li!e a tub and said to them, ifyou accept the Torahall ill be ell, and if not you ill be buried here.
