LIFE

Attended high school for 1 year Passed entrance exams for U of California at

Berkley. Studied, wrote, and worked and ended up

dropping out half way through the first year Traveled to the Klondike to prosper for gold

in 1897 Became sick and had to leave but the

experience was an inspiration for his writing

WILDERNESS AND WRITING

First major success, story collection: The Son of the Wolf To build a Fire (most famous short story)

focuses on survival The Call of the Wild (most famous

novel) celebrates the escape to freedom of a sled dog named Buck

SUCCESS AND HARDSHIP

He turned out nearly 50 volumes of essays and fiction

Became a millionaire Married and had 2 daughters

Wife sued him for divorce in 1905 Remarried and moved to Sonoma, CA

Nearly completed mansion burned down Became an alcoholic and suffered kidney disease

and depression Took a lethal dose of narcotics in 1916, fell into a

coma and died
