Dear Parents/Guardians,
Happy New Year! It was wonderful to see so many parents at our holiday
concerts before winter break. Thank you for your support, and also to the
parents that helped with our team parties in grades 5 and 6. We couldn’t do it
without you! Also prior to break, school counselor Ms. Jennifer Gaydos was
awarded the district Crystal Starfish Award for going above and beyond the
scope of the job to make a difference for our students. If you have had the
chance to work with Ms. Gaydos at NRMS, this should come as no surprise to
you We are very proud to have her as a part of our team!
On December 13, NRMS welcomed a speaker from Rachel’s Challenge to
share the story of Rachel Scott and the positive message for change she left
behind (learn more at rachelschallenge.org). All students had the opportunity
to experience this amazing event, and members of our 8th
grade Honor
Society, Student Council, and Chain Links groups participated in a
leadership training seminar on how to get Rachel’s “chain reaction” started.
Nine other area middle schools visited and participated along with us which
provided a great opportunity for our student leaders to network and share
ideas. Members of Chain Links also presented at the January Board of
Education meeting, along with one of our faculty advisors, Mrs. Deanna
Paolino, to share past, present, and future ideas the club has for continuing to
spread the kindness Rachel envisioned.
Our Physical Education department once again sponsored Jump Rope for
Heart to kick off the second semester of the school year. Mr. Francescone
worked his magic to accumulate prizes to be raffled off to students, with
highly desired items such as Beats headphones and cash!! Students purchased
tickets during lunch periods for just one week at a bargain price of $.25 each.
Staff members also had the opportunity to “dress down” if they made a
donation to the American Heart Association and our Student Council donated
as well. Altogether, NRMS will be donating over $2,300 to the American
Heart Association! Many thanks go to our PTA volunteers who sold tickets
and handled the organization of the donations and to Mr. Francescone for his
outstanding effort with organizing this worthy cause. Area businesses who
contributed prizes were:
Papa Johns Best Buy
Augie’s Pizza Gearin’ Up
NR Subway SkyZone
BJ’s Wholesale Club Melt Restaurant
Campbell’s Candy Store *NRMS PTA donated the Beats headphones

Principal’s Message Continued Our Power of the Pen team, under the direction of Mrs. Drescher and Mr. Anderson, competed in regional competition
in mid-January. This year our 8th grade team brought home a HUGE 2
nd place win! All members of the team must write
and score extremely well for the entire team to not only place, but earn a high enough ranking to get 2nd
place!
Additionally, we had three individual winners: eighth graders Kate Altany and Kate Young and seventh grader Gerald
Mastellone. Congratulations to all of our participants!
I hope you had a chance to see the feature on our wrestling team, featuring Cedric Lehky, Connor Mills, Jack Nemetz,
Nolan Pearce, and Coach Dan Foldesy done by Fox 8 News last week. We are so proud of our fine young men for
recognizing and supporting the talents in one another and the power of teamwork Our website has the link for the
story if you missed it. Check it out!
Upcoming Winter Social Opportunity for ALL NRMS students: A BASKETBALL TAILGATE will be held on
February 6th
after school to cheer on the 8th grade boys’ team at 4:30, and then the 8
th grade girls’ team immediately
following. Student ticket sales will take place during the week of the games. Information will run on announcements and
will be posted on our website. We hope to see many students there!
Finally, our Board of Education recently voted to place the Bond Issue that was attempted in the fall on the May ballot
for voter approval. Please take time to familiarize yourself with the needs of our school facilities and consider becoming
involved in the campaign.
As always, we look forward to seeing you at our middle school events. Please feel free to contact our school office or
your student’s team coordinator at any time with questions you may have about life at NRMS. Stay warm!
Sincerely,
Melissa I. Vojta

North Royalton Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes January 21, 2014 Community Room
Call to Order: Lynn Dorman, President 9:35a.m.
Pledge and Welcome
SECRETARY’S REPORT – Mary Ellen Watrobski – November minutes were posted, no changes or
additions to be made.
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S REPORT – Jen Porter – Dec. cards are out, working on Jan.
TREASURER’S REPORT – Sandy Mraz - Balance on hand: $20,470.32
GUEST SPEAKER - Mr. Gurka –
Good morning. I’m just popping into PTA meetings around the district. With regard to calamity days, we
closed for two days following winter break for the cold temperatures, and made the decision to stay open the
third day because conditions were to be improving throughout the day. We have to think about students
standing out at the bus stop, buses starting and high school students’ cars starting in the afternoon. With
temperatures of 0 degrees and/or -15 wind chill we start our conversation about the day being called off. Buses
were able to start on Wed., however, some started breaking down during the run. Mrs. Vojta made a call just
to let people know that some buses were running late. It’s never an easy decision to cancel school. We watch
throughout the night and try to make the call by 5:00 a.m. Usually, when school is cancelled all activities are
cancelled. However, we may make an exception based on specific issues.
We have a special board meeting tomorrow here in the community room to discuss the bond being placed on
the May ballot. The board passed a resolution last week to submit for the millage to be certified. We’ve been
talking about facilities for many years. We need to do something about the conditions of our schools. Even the
middle school roof is reaching its lifespan. The longer we wait the more costly the issue becomes. If the
resolution passes, we will need your help and support in getting the issue passed. I’m happy to answer any
questions.
(Becky Cozzens) The next PASS meeting is Wed. January 29th
at 1:00 at the NR library. This is a group of
citizens working toward getting the bond issue passed; everyone is welcome to attend the meeting.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Mrs. Vojta –
Good morning! Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the holidays. It was an awfully long break! We’re
starting our third quarter, and second semester today. There have been questions about wheel course credits
being lowered. The quarter classes are .25 credits and semester classes are .5 credits.
Before break Ms. Gaydos was awarded the Crystal Starfish award. It is very well deserved. We’re lucky to
have such great counselors working with our kids.
Thank you to the parents who worked the winter parties; they went great.
Nine other schools attended Rachel’s Challenge, which went great. Our Chain Links group, an offshoot of
Rachel’s Challenge has been rejuvenated. Members of the group attended the board meeting and have started
working on new activities. This group is open to all middle school students. Mrs. Paolino does a great job with
the group.
We just finished up Jump Rope for Heart. Mr. Fancescone is appreciative of the help. We earned over
$2,000.00 through raffles and donations from staff.
The Power of the Pen team competed last weekend and the 8th
grade placed second out of 27 teams. Each team
member needed to compete well to achieve this. We had some individual place winners as well. We’re very
proud!
January 2014 Cub Chronicle Page 4 of 13
This afternoon is our Pep rally for the winter sports recognition. We have 4 teachers who are taking a pie in the
face!
Today our 8th
graders are receiving course booklets for next year’s high school courses. Tomorrow night in the
PAC there is a meeting for parents and students with guidance counselors to answer questions.
The Grizzlies are scheduled to go to the CVEEC tomorrow. We’re in constant contact with the center
regarding the weather.
Feb. 6th
will be the winter tailgate after school. We will need some parent volunteers for it. We will need
donations of individual bags of chips, we’ll take care of the rest. The boys 8th
grade basketball team will play
first followed by the girls.
The candy sale going on right now is to help the student with paying for their Chicago and Washington, D.C.
trips; the school does not receive any money.
We’re looking forward to 5th
/6th
grade talent show next week.

Parent Teacher Association
Make A Difference Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Friends:
The beginning of the school year marks the beginning of another school year of opportunities and
challenges for the students of North Royalton Middle School. We all want to see our students become the
best they can be. We try to support them in many different ways throughout the school year. One of the
most important ways we can support and encourage our students is by becoming a PTA member. Your
$6.00 membership fee helps provide social activities and creative challenges for our students. Our PTA
volunteers chaperone socials, provide tutoring, and assist the staff in many different ways.
Please show your children that their education is important to you by joining the NRMS PTA. Fill out
the bottom portion of this sheet and enclose it and your $6.00 membership fee in an envelope marked
“PTA Membership”, and return it to the school via your child as soon as possible. Everyone is welcome
at our PTA meetings, but it is not necessary to attend the meetings in order to become a PTA member.
