Jefferson Airplane Origins
• Marty Balin, founder of the group, bought a former pizza parlor in San Francisco
• Intended to remodel it into a club • Balin, a singer, searched to find other musicians to
form a house band • Formed in 1964
Grace Slick
• Became the new & permanent female singer • Powerful voice • A former model • Wrote many songs including
the hit
Temporary Breakup • After producing several albums together, they
broke up in 1970 • Eventually reformed as the Jefferson Starship • Released Red Octopus, their only #1 Album • Regrouped and performed many times until the 80s • Inducted into Rock Hall of Fame in 1996

• Carlos Santana formed the band in the late 1960s • The use of Afro-Cuban Music set them apart • Became famous after their performance at
