As a team we understand the struggles that children have
with learning fractions. We want to work with teachers and
students in order to create a fun and educational lesson plan.
The lesson plan that we created can be used with 2nd grade
students to introduce simple fractions. The “Jelly Bean
Fraction” lesson plan will be able to be implemented in any
lower elementary classroom.
PURPOSE OF PROJECT
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.1
Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part
when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a
fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b .
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3.d
Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same
denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that
comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the
same whole.
STATE STANDARDS
Review the terms numerator, denominator, and fraction.
Introduce the terms set and whole. Talk about the whole class is a set of children or students. Ask how many students are boys which becomes the numerator. The denominator is the whole (number of students in the class). Write the fraction on the Elmo projector or board so that the students can see the fraction of boys in the class and the fraction of gir ls in the class.
BACKGROUND
Have children stand up to play the numerator and denominator game. When the teacher says numerator the students sit on the edge of their table. When the teacher says denominator then the students get under their table. The game helps reinforce the terms numerator and denominator.
ACTIVITY
Take the jelly bean
cutouts and display
them on the
projector for the
children to see. Ask
the students how
many there are of
each color and write
as a fraction.
ACTIVITY
Activity Preparation:
Make copies of the worksheets.
Gather all materials and place 20 jellybeans in
individual bags (one bag per child).
Purpose of Activity:
Help students meet the common core
standards while encouraging them to enjoy math
lessons.
Allow students to be physically active as they engage
in a hands-on learning activity.
