Spotlight on ChildrensLiteracy in Washington
During 2010, the JLW launched a Literacy Task Force to evaluateareas of need in Washington in order to embark on new andexciting projects to tackle the issue of literacy.
The Literacy Task Force adopted a specific focus on childrensliteracy, with a goal of putting more books in the hands and homesof children as well as supporting opportunities to read aloud tochildren. Heading into its Centennial year, the JLW has committedto get 100,000 books into the hands of D.C. kids through itsResolution Read program. Just this June, the JLW donated6,266 books to DC students aged pre-K through 4th grade inpartnership with groups such as Literacy Lab, Excel Academy,
Washington Middle School, Washington Jesuit Academy andHortons Kids.
Some of the Junior League of Washingtons childrens literacypartners include:Bright Beginnings, a childcare center for homeless preschoolersDoorways for Women and Families, operating shelters forwomen and children affected by domestic violenceHigher Achievement, focused on developing academic skills inunderserved and motivated middle school students
Building Futures, supporting children and families affected byHIV/AIDS in the DC areaHortons Kids, offering tutoring sessions to 125 children inAnacostiaLiteracy Lab, providing reading instruction and literacydevelopment workshops for parents and childrenNational Book Festival, offering 120,000 attendees theopportunity to participate in a free celebration of the joy of readingTeen Life Clubs, an empowerment program for at risk teens that
help to increase health literacy and life skills
A Book of Their OwnIn 1991, JLW volunteers established BrigBeginnings, a childcare center for homelpreschoolers. This year, as part of itscommitment to put books in the hands ochildren in Washington, the JLW purcha140 copies of Eric Carles classic The VeryHungry Caterpillarfor the children of Brig
Beginnings.
Bringing Parents On BoardThe summer break means sun and fun fokids, but it also can set children behind intheir learning. For students without anopportunity to continue learning over thsummer, this can mean setbacks in readinand a widening of the achievement gap. Tsummer, the JLW kicked off its goal of
distributing 100,000 books by partneringthe Literacy Lab to get books into the haDC elementary school students. With thbooks came a letter from Literacy Lab toparents, giving them ideas for questions activities to keep their kids engaged in reall summer long.
Weekend on the Mallach September, the Library of Congress hosts the National Book Festival, lebrating reading and offering festival goers the opportunity to meet prominent
uthors and to expand their love for reading. In the fall of 2011, the JLW providedver 500 volunteers to help the National Book Festival run smoothly.

In 2000 the JLW embarked on a program to encourage ansupport literacy, instituting a poetry contest in theelementary grades of Washington, D.C. public and charteschools.
The purpose of the contest is to encourage young authors explore reading and writing poetry by submitting originalwork on any topic of personal significance.

With the JLWs focus on helping children develop andimprove their literacy skills, it is truly inspiring to read thecollection of poems and to encourage a vibrant presence inthe lives of children in the greater metropolitan area of the
District of Columbia.
Each year the JLW awards a $10,000 scholarship in memory of the lateReverend Margaret M. Graham, former president of the Association ofJunior Leagues International and member of the JLW.

For the 6th year in a row, the Junior League of Washington
helped to address the growing issue of childhood obesitythrough our Kids in the Kitchen activity fair, aimed atcombatting childhood obesity through nutrition andwellness education. Its also a free day of fun open toeveryone!
This year, there were awesome cooking demonstrations, activities, and games focused on making healthy lifestylechoices. Everyone wanted to see the display of unusualfruits and veggies.
One of the fitness activities was teaching the childrenyoga. Is there anything cuter than a bunch of kids inwarrior pose? Maybe our littlest chefs "exercising" in thetoddler mat/block area. Namaste!
Kids left this high-energy event with fantastic goodie bagsand giveaways to serve as reminders of what they learnedso the fun and healthy lifestyle habits can continue.
