From the President’s Desk
Looking back over the years, I realized
that the memories I have from JMH are
not of the building itself, but mostly the
many friends, teachers and staff whom I
hold dear. Our school building, as we
know it, was replaced by a modern,
beautiful structure with a new concept
and hope for the future. Several architec-
tural features from our building were
incorporated, merging the old with the
new. While the building does not look
like ‘our school’ (for those of us who
attended between 1932-2012), it still is
John Marshall High School. After all, a
building does not MAKE a school.
We are happy to report that The Cleve-
land Browns will be paying for the instal-
lation of an artificial turf football field
this summer.
Please check our website for further in-
formation regarding an Alumni Event at
one of the Senate games or call our num-
ber provided. For those of you who have
asked, at this time, no plans are being
made for a new track or stands.
As many of you know, we had a Message
Board in front of the old JMH, provided
by the Alumni Association in 1999. The
sign was then moved to the temporary
site at Shuler and never returned to the
new school. The school will be conduct-
ing meetings to see how a new, modern
electronic controlled message board can
be acquired. Stay tuned – we may be
asked for help from the school!
Our annual newsletter keeps your mem-
ories ‘fresh’. Your continued financial
support allows us through our operating
funds, to provide those memories to
you.
Our fundraisers, original bricks, Alumni
Plaza pavers and merchandise, help sup-
port our endowment fund providing
scholarships to students each year and
other school group requests. Your annu-
al support is truly appreciated – without
YOU, we could not exist.
Thank you, Ken Tischler 1/57

IT is the first school in the State of Ohio
to focus on Computer Science. We are
excited about our growing partnerships
with universities and IT professionals. This
April, we are planning a Boston College
Tour to expose students to colleges that
have renowned IT programs, such as
M.I.T. and The University of Massachu-
setts – Amherst. We will also be visiting
The University of Massachusetts – Bos-
ton, as well as participating in many of
the cultural experiences the area has to
offer. Upon their return, students will
document their trip digitally.

News from the School On December 22, 2016, the Air Force ROTC group presented Col-
ors at a send- off for Special Ed teacher Gary Harvey. A while ago
He had reenlisted with the National Guard. Recently he was called
to duty beginning in January 2017, to serve in Jordan for the up-
coming year. John Marshall students, staff, friends, family and
Alumni attended to help surprise him with this farewell. He was
presented with a Kindle Fire – to keep in touch with family and his
JMH family, along with a ‘lone boot’ with his name in it, from the
ROTC Officer Shaw. We’re sure there is a story behind
that! William Kubik, 6/59, a Navy Veteran, also attended the
ceremony along with his family – Karen Dotson, JMH Sp. Ed staff
and Megan Dotson, Sp. Ed Paraprofessional for Gary.
The first wrestling match of the season was held on December 8th –
between John Marshall, Glenville, St. Gabriel and Maple Hts. This
was to be the Alumni Night – unfortunately very few alumni at-
tended. So mark your calendars for the next year – this will be an
annual event. In attendance though, were JMH wrestlers Bill Var-
ga, 1/41, a State Wrestling Champ, and JMH Hall of Famer, Jim
Gorsline, 6/54, a 3 time State Wrestling Champ. Both gentlemen
gave a short pep talk to the team and enjoyed the match. Glenville
had no team in attendance, so the 3 remaining competed. Maple
Hts. still seems to be in charge, winning many of the matches be-
tween St. Gabriel and JMH. Be sure to mark your calendars for an
annual tournament planned for February each year named in Coach
Gibbons Honor.
On March 9, 2017, six JMH seniors attended the Cleveland Rotary
Club’s luncheon for—Who’s Who in CMSD, at Windows on the
River. This April, fifty seniors will also travel to Washington DC
and Columbus as part of the Senior festivities.
JMIT junior Rochell Bradley was selected as the December All
Star Kid for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Congratulations!
From the Athletic Director & JMH Sports
John Marshall High School Athletics have been through a very posi-
tive and successful first semester of the 2016-2017 school year.
Our fall sports were very successful in Senate League play. The John
Marshall Lawyers placed third in volleyball, second in golf, second
in soccer, and were league champions in girls’ tennis. Lawyer foot-
ball showed great improvement, and we are looking forward to the
reopening of Lawyer Stadium in the fall of 2017.
Winter sports - Boys’ basketball had travelled to Barberton and East
Liverpool early in the season. Update: Boys’ team participated in
Tournament play on March 1st, beating Rhodes in a come from
behind 20 point deficit, with a final score of 54-50. The crowd
rushed the court! On March 4th , the Lawyers played Brecksville
Broadview Hts. in the next round, falling to them with a score of
72-51. The Girls’ basketball team and has shown improvement and
also had trips to the Chippewa Tournament and Akron. Our bowling
team stood at the top of the Senate standings. Wrestling and swim-
ming have had decent attendance. Update: the Wrestling team
ended up winning the City Championship.! Congratulations to
all participants! We are in the early stages of building a John Marshall Athletics
Booster Club. We are in dire need to increase our funding to help
our programs grow and compete, not just in the Senate League but
all around Cuyahoga County and the State of Ohio.
If you are interested in assisting in the growth and development of
John Marshall High School Athletics, and in helping us put our Law-
yers back where we belong, please contact me at the address below.
We would love to have our community work with us in fundraising
and booster club development. We could use your time and talents.

1976 State Runner-Up Trophy
Ms. Beebe visited the new school and thought it would be a good
time to produce the 1976 Runner-up State Volleyball Trophy. She
met with Ken Tischler and Deborah Fought on 9/12/16 to return the
trophy to John Marshall.
Ms. Beebe wrote, “For sure this trophy represents a time in the his-
tory of John Marshall as well as the Cleveland Public Schools. The
fete that this team did will never be repeated. Why? This 1976
team didn't go to any camps as most schools now do. They began
their quest the first day volleyball practice could begin. No summer
league play. Their team drive to succeed was extraordinary and
even surprised themselves.
Hardly any money came from the
athletic department to achieve this
goal. We had to work the concession
stand at all basketball games to ob-
tain money as well as sell can-
dy. Nothing was handed to them for
free.
To have these student athletes
achieve what they did is monumental
to say the least. All their names have
been inscribed on the trophy.”
Ms. Beebe kept the trophy so it would not be lost when the old John
Marshall was destroyed. And now the trophy rests in the new John
Marshall trophy case for students to enjoy.

A group of six artists from Martin County have given to resi-
dents much distinguished and award-winning art, and countless
hours encouraging and promoting the arts.
A show was given in their honor at the Arts Council of Martin
County Gallery in Stuart, FL. I was one of six artists chosen to
be in this show. I teach at the Hobe Sound Fine Arts League
gallery in Hobe Sound and at the Artist Nook in Stuart.
The Masters and Mentors show was in December 2015.
I also had a piece of my work chosen for the Florida Calendar
for 2016. In Feb. of 2016 one of my pieces of art work was cho-
sen for the poster art for the Hobe Sound Art Fest.
When I was at JM in the 50’s, I took as much art as I could but
never thought of being an Art Teacher. Teaching art to begin-
ners started after I moved to Florida and people would ask me if
I could teach them how to paint.

Notice some things
missing?
Pictures! We need
group photos after your
reunion to share with the
rest of your classmates
who couldn’t attend!
And we need names!
Obviously, the newslet-
ter doesn’t allow us to
list all of the names in a
large class photo, a com-
mittee picture, or a shot
of 4 or 5 classmates to-
gether would be great.
Memories—comments or
uniqueness of your reun-

about! But we need this
AFTER your reunions
when the memories are
fresh!
Asking for information
around January, is diffi-
cult to find and for us to
get in the newsletter.
Please, send us some
memories to share!

garding the Pavers.
His sister Linda
(6/60) and brother in
law Bill Hoge (6/59)
had passed away and
wondered if he could
spread some of their ashes
beneath their bricks. Ken
knew that it could be done,
but thought of the possibility
of putting them IN the brick.
So Ken called Milano Monuments and asked if they
could drill a hole in the side of each brick.
Frank would have to put some of their remains in a 3/8 “
wide x 3” long tube and they could be put in that hole..
When the pavers were installed, Frank and his wife were
there to assist. What a great idea to honor a loved one!
FYI—Bill Hoge was a star quarterback for JMH and an
outstanding basketball player. In one game he scored 40
points, setting a school record—which may still be un-
broken.
‘OUR’ John Marshall is gone, but the new JMHS has incor-
porated several of its architectural elements. The Alumni
Plaza is located on the Viola St. side, near the student en-
trance. Several original granite steps provide three rows of
seating, with rows of red brick pavers interspersed between
them. You can leave your mark and become a permanent
part of the new school. This is a great opportunity to pay
tribute to a past JMHS graduate, a teacher, yourself, or your
family. Red pavers are deeply engraved with your name and
class year, with lettering painted black. Funds raised by the
sale will go to the John Marshall Endowment fund, which is

Remember:
We never share your information with anyone,
except Reunion Committees!
Please Help Us Update our Records! We strive to keep our database up-to-date so that we can provide addresses to
your reunion committees and keep the communication lines open with all alum-
ni. If you have friends or relatives who graduated from Marshall please and
they are not receiving our Newsletter, it’s likely that we don’t have their current
address. Please spend a few moments to let us know of a name change and/or
their location. One of the most difficult and time consuming tasks for any reun-
ion committee is trying to find missing classmates. Please let us know when
and where you move in order to keep our costs down—the Post Office charges
us FIRST CLASS RATES on returns and forwards for a limited time.
