Capstone Project
APPLE REMOTE DESKTOP WITH A SIDE ORDER OF ALICE
MOTOVATIONI wanted to find an educational
program and/or software and be able to distribute that program on a large scale remotely.
Needed to find something that was something I hadn’t done before plus something that was beneficial for students and myself.
INTRODUCTIONI’ve been working at Floyd County Schools
this semester. They’ve been gracious enough to let me
use some of their resources in order to complete this project.
In short, I spent $0 on this project. Always nice.
Wanted to do a networking project. The networking side always interested me
more than the hardware side.
PROBLEM STATEMENTWhat kind of program would be beneficial to Floyd County students and staff and how would I distribute that program on a large scale?
ASSUMPTIONSFinding something that students could use
in the classroom was going to be difficult. I had never used a remote desktop service
before personally so I wondered if it could do what I needed it to do.
Besides students using the program, it had to be something that was completely new to me.
PROPOSED SOLUTIONSI would use Apple Remote Desktop as my
remote service tool. My computer at work is an iMac so it only made sense (plus I like them better).
An object-oriented programming tool called Alice was the program I wanted to use and be able to distribute using ARD.
APPLE REMOTE DESKTOP
ALICE
TESTING/TROBLESHOOTINGTested Apple Remote Desktop by
distributing word documents to a few computers and placing them on the desktop.
I was successful in transferring simple word documents. Then I started using its features like Observe, Control, Curtain, and Copy.
Making an animation on Alice was tough due to no prior experience and no book to go by. Youtube helped a lot here.
RESULTSApple Remote Desktop successfully
distributed Alice to another computer without a hitch.
Since I wasn’t uploading Alice to a large number of iMac’s, distribution only took a few seconds.
Alice worked as if I had installed the program instead of copying the program. Also finished a small animation.
ALICE TRANSFER SUCCEEDED
VERIFYING RESULTSThese next two videos are my findings and
tutorials for both Apple Remote Desktop and Alice.
As you will see I was able to successfully distribute Alice to a second computer with no difficulty.
MY CONCLUSIONApple Remote Desktop so far has been my
favorite remote desktop program that I’ve got to use.
ARD is very flexible and user friendly. Alice is a fun and productive program that
lets the user create something while learning programming at the same time. The user figures out what code goes what order to make something completely their own.
FUTURE WORKWould like to continue working with Alice
over the summer and maybe make a better movie.
I’m sure I’ll be using Apple Remote Desktop further down the road.
Recently, our office distributed a program called Vanguard to iMac’s throughout our district using ARD. This program allowed students to take the ACT online.
Maybe distribute Alice district wide, whether it’s on an Apple or Dell.
TECHNICAL RESEARCHMost research was done by me asking my
supervisor at work questions. He led me on to use Apple Remote Desktop
and Alice. Also looked up ARD instructional guides
and Alice textbooks/documents.Used Google and what came with ARD as a
starting point. Also for Alice I used www.alice.org. and
Youtube for assistance.
