Dear Friends,
Happy New Year! On behalf of Fr. Larry, Fr. Richard and Fr. Gonzalo I wish all of you a very Happy New Year!
Th is is the great day of new beginnings. Today millions of resolu-tions will be made and a good deal of them will be broken before the month is out. Many others just may be kept. Th is New Year is full of possibility and full of mystery. It can be frightening; it can be exciting; it can be life giving. Th e key to the New Year being any of those things rests with each one of us. Th at’s right. You drive your future. You make choices about your life. It is your choices that will make 2012 a wonderful year, a good year, a mediocre year or a horrible year. Our fate is in our own hands. Th at is really one of the most wonderful gift s God has given us—our free will. It is up to us to use it well. Our new beginnings are determined by our own free will.
Along with celebrating the New Year today, we also celebrate Mary the Mother of God. Mary the Mother of God is about new begin-nings, just as today, January 1, is about new beginnings. She is the God-bearer. She gave birth to God in our world and thereby helped make all things new. You and I have the power to be God-bearers. We too can give birth to God in our world every day and thereby make all things new.
You and I will make a great deal of resolutions today. You and I will probably break a great deal of those resolutions by tomorrow! Let us make a resolution together that we can help each other keep all year long. Let’s all resolve right now to make this day of new beginnings the day we start giving birth to God in our world. Let’s resolve to be like Mary the Mother of God. Let’s resolve to be faith-ful, to be a champion of the oppressed, to be simple in our love for one another. If we make this resolution and if we help each other remain faithful to it, then we will indeed be off to a good start to the New Year. We will be ready for great, new beginnings. By keeping this resolution we will be God-bearers all year long and that makes all things new again!
As this week of holiday celebrations comes to a close, I want to thank you for all your generous gift s, cards and greetings that you sent to the friars. We truly were overwhelmed by your generosity and are very grateful to you. Whether you sent us a gift , a card or remembered us in your prayers during this Christmas Season, we are very grateful. Th ank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you!
Of the many generous gift s we received this week, one for the par-ish really stands out. Our friends at Family Carpets in Riverdale donated and installed new linoleum in the St. Mary Food Pantry.
On Friday, January 6 the church will celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. Th e story of the glory of God being revealed to the Magi is beautiful. Th roughout the Christmas Season the glory of God has been revealed to us. Like the Magi, let’s always keep our eye on the star that is leading us to God. Th e Christmas Season may be ending, but the revelation of the glory of God is just begin-ning! Keep your eye on the star.
Have a great week, and once again—Happy New Year!
Pace e Bene,
Fr. Frank Sevola, OFMPastorFr. Frank can be reached at [email protected]
Th is generous gift puts the fi nishing touch on the food pantry as we get ready to start our new client choice program. Th anks so much to Michael Slater and everyone at Family Carpets!
I think you will agree that the church is beautifully decorated! A great deal of work goes into decorating the church for Christmas. I am especially grateful to Gerri Ralph for working with me over the past few months on the décor. Th anks, too, to all those who spent so much time putting it all together—Colm Ralph, Kevin and Kathy Hickey, John Darcy and Chris and Pauline Barranco of Flowers Right Now. Th ank you very much!
Last week I mentioned in this column that a new boiler was in-stalled in the church just before Christmas. Th e cost of that new boiler is $20,000. Th is is a very high capital expense for us that we did not plan for in the current parish budget. I would like to ask you to consider making a gift to the parish to help us cover this cost. A bill of $20,000 is a lot for the parish to absorb, so any con-tribution that you can make will be greatly appreciated.

Ministry News
Food Pantry - Bella Casa - Th ank you (again)! Th is year, as he has done for a number of years, Al Grecco shut down his restaurant (Bella Casa in Pompton Lakes) at 3:00 PM on Christmas Eve so that he and his staff could provide a spe-cial Christmas dinner to needy families with children. And, it’s not just dinner! At some point, Santa arrives with loads of do-nated toys for the children all wrapped in advance by his staff . Th is year the turnout was so great that Al called and asked if we could supply some folding chairs to accommodate the people he just couldn’t say no to. Aft erwards, when getting the chairs back, I learned that it was (no surprise) a wonderful event - especially for the children. In addition to all of the individual donations, Al also received gift cards from the Pompton Reformed Church and got a surprise donation of 5 bags of toys from Walgreens. What’s needed now? Food-wise we are still in rather good shape; but could use non-food items, like personal soaps, toothpaste, shampoo, dish detergent, etc. Also, your prayers are requested - that January 21, 2012, our fi rst distribution of the new year, will go smoothly (it will be the fi rst time that our families shop for their own groceries!).

First Reading: Numbers 6:22-27—Th e Lord told Aaron to bestow his blessings on the Israelites. God wanted them to know that by invoking his name they would be blessed by him.
Second Reading: Galatians 4:4-7—Paul describes how through Jesus’ birth, we have been delivered from the laws that ex-iled Gentiles from God’s community. Th rough Jesus, the Gentiles became God’s adopted ones and would receive the same blessings that the Jewish converts had been promised.
Gospel: Luke 2:16-21—Th e shepherds went to Bethlehem to see Jesus and immediately understood all that they had been told about him. Th ey praised God for what they had seen, and Jesus was given the name that the angel had chosen for him.
Sunday Readings His Word Today
Th e proof that you are sons is the fact that God has sent forth into our hearts the spirit of his Son which cries out ‘Abba!’ (“Father”). You are no longer a slave but a son! And the fact that you are a son makes you an heir, by God’s design.… Mary treasured all these things and refl ected on them in her heart. Openings are always important. Th e opening game, the premiere of a movie, the fi rst night of a show, all take on special meaning. As we begin this new year, let’s give it special meaning. What has transpired this past week?
We have celebrated the coming of our God in history, as one with us, Emmanuel. He has answered our need, our urgent request for a savior. Not only that, He remains in us through His Spirit dwell-ing within us. We know a loving God, who generously has saved us and because He is kind allows us to call Him “Daddy.” It is in-teresting that the scripture leaves the word in the original, before translating Abba.
We begin a new year, aware of who we are and whose we are. A great inheritance awaits us and we begin 2012 with our plans to unite us with God’s design. Like Mary we treasure what has hap-pened in history and to us. Like Mary we begin the year, grateful for what was, eagerly looking forward to what can be as we too refl ect, ponder or weigh how special it is to launch this new year of grace. May we conform our lives to the plan of God and see His hand present in all that will occur.
