KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS JULY 2015
www.kofcohio.org Monthly Publication of the Ohio State Council
Brother Knights,
Our theme, “Through Him, With
Him, In Him,” is taken from the
Ordinary of the Mass. It is that
time of the mass when we give
everything back to God the Father
through His Son Jesus Christ.
A firm commitment to these six
simple words will set the tone for a
new found faith, a stronger
catholic family and an
unshakeable church.
We do realize that simple words
alone do not make a program
successful. It will be the love of
God on fire within our hearts and
souls that will make this theme
take life.
It will start with the performance
of every act of charity uniting
ourselves as a single brotherhood
across this great State of Ohio, all
for the honor and glory of God.
We cannot afford to take a single
moment or opportunity for
granted. The focus must be a
renewed effort dedicating our lives
and actions to the Almighty
Father.
Our theme, our mission statement,
our state program are all faith
based and focused on our efforts as
Knights of Columbus to work
through our parishes and reach
out to the community, our families
and our youth. It will take a
supreme effort of dedication from
everyone working to give
everything back to God and truly
become successful as a Knight, a
Council, and a Brotherhood. We
must continue to remain the
visible leadership within the
Catholic Community.
“Through Him, With Him, In
Him,” we hear it every time when
we attend the sacrifice of the mass.

STATE CHAPLAIN
An early Pro-Life advertisement
stated: “LIFE: What a beautiful
gift.” This truth is still valid
today for it is an objective moral
truth. Human life is a gift; a gift
from God.
The Knights of Columbus has
always been a defender of all
human life from its beginning at
the time of conception to its
ending at the time of a natural
death. It is no surprise that the
Knights of Columbus would have
an important role to play in the
conception of the Silver Rose
Program.
The Ohio State Council has
made this year’s running of the
Silver Rose a priority. It is only
fitting that one of the first
projects for the new Ohio State
Council is to involve the
promotion of LIFE. It is one of
my priorities as the State
Chaplain to promote all issues
pertaining to LIFE.
I am asking that the Knights of
Columbus in each of the six
dioceses to hold daily some type
of liturgical service with the
Silver Rose whether presented in
the diocesan cathedral, parish
church, Eucharistic Chapel or in
some place in which the faithful
can have to opportunity to have
some time for private prayer and
for a public liturgical activity.
This could be a Mass,
Eucharistic Adoration with
Benediction, the Knights of
Columbus prayer service or any
other liturgically approved and
worthy expression for the
Sanctity of LIFE.
The following is from the
Supreme Knights of Columbus
website explaining the History
and the 2015 Silver Rose
Program. I have also provided
information on the 2015 Silver
Rose Route 4 which will include
the State of Ohio and our
schedule for the Silver Rose in
Ohio.
The History of the
Silver Rose Our Lady of Guadalupe had done
so much for her people in Mexico
that, in 1960, the Columbian
Squires, the official youth
organization of the Knights of
Columbus, wanted to give
something back to her.
The group, headed by Brother
Miguel Martinez Estrada, Grand
Knight Andreas Saucedo and
Fray Margil De Jesus of Knights
of Columbus Nuestra Senora de
Monterrey Council 2312 in
Monterrey, Mexico, came up
with the idea of running a rose
to the Basilica of Our Lady of
Guadalupe in Monterrey,
Mexico. The Squires were so
enthused that they wanted to
invite other Squires from two
other countries on the North
American Continent to
participate. They called on
Squires from Laredo, Texas, and
London, Ontario. The Canadian
Squires asked to start the relay
running of the Rose from there
through the United States and
finishing up in Mexico.
Bishop John C. Cody of London
blessed the first rose. It was then
flown to New York where it was
received by Grand Knight
Joseph Thomasen, who in turn
took it to Supreme Knight Luke
E. Hart. Mr. Hart then took the
Rose to Dallas, Texas, and
delivered it to district officers of
the state of Texas. Texas State
Deputy Jack Collerin received
the Rose and took it to Laredo,
Texas, where it was given to the
Squires from Monterrey, Mexico,
at the International Bridge in
Laredo. They ran the Rose from
the International Bridge to
Monterrey through Sabinas
Hidalgo N.L. Mexico to Cienega
de Flores and on to the Basilica
in Monterrey, Mexico on
December 12, 1960.
The first rose was a natural rose,
and after a year it had
decomposed. The Squires were so
full of inspiration they decided to
make yet another relay run in
1961, but due to the condition of
the Rose it could not be used
again. After contacting Grand
Knight Arthur Mount at Council
1134, Reverend Edward Gatfield
(FatherTed) and Bishop John C.
Cody decided to make a bronze
rose and sent it to the Basilica of
Our Lady of Guadalupe in

Monterrey, Mexico.
When Fray Antonio de Jesus
Sacedon and the Squires of
Circle 660 in Monterrey heard of
the bronze rose, they decided to
call upon Brother Miguel
Martinez Montoya (owner of
Joyeria Rosine) in Monterrey to
make them a similar rose. The
idea was to make a silver rose
because silver is one of
Mexico’s precious metals.
The jeweler saw a beautiful
bed of roses in a garden
owned by Mrs. Shirla
Ostwowk. He asked if he
could have a rose as a model
for the making of the “Silver
Rose.” Mr. Montoya explained
what had happened to the
original rose in 1960 and
what Canada was doing for
Our Lady in Monterrey. Once
she heard about the making
of the “Silver Rose” she gladly
gave him a rose and the stem
to which it was attached.
The rose bush from which the
rose was removed was called
“Rose of Peace.” The first
“Silver Rose” was blessed by
Bishop Alfonso Espino Silva.
It was sent to New Haven to
William L. Piedmont,
Director of Fraternal Services
at the Supreme Council Office.
The Bronze Rose was blessed by
Bishop Cody. It was received by
Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart.
Archbishop Francis J. Spellman
of New York so admired both
roses he kept them for a special
Mass before they were flown to
Texas.
Texas State Deputy Jack
Collerin, State Secretary Ed
Gunter and Grand Knight Scott
Grant of Fort Worth sent the
roses on to Laredo. Laredo
Council 2304 received the roses
and turned them over to brother
Knights from at the midpoint of
the International Bridge.
Brothers’ Louis G. Alanis
received the “Silver Rose” and
Brother Enrique Garcia received
the Bronze Rose. Again the roses
were taken to Sabinas Hidago
and Cienega de Flores and on to
Monterrey. This tradition
symbolizes unity and especially
the international brotherhood
that has been jointly nurtured
three countries.
After 1961, the program was
conducted by the Knights of
Texas and Mexico and the Our
Lady of Guadalupe Province of
the Fourth Degree of the
Knights of Columbus until the
mid-1990s, when it was adopted
as a Supreme Council program
which grew to encompass three
Silver Rose Routes
Today four roses are run along
different North American routes
from Canada to México through
38 U.S. states and five Canadian
provinces before meeting in
Laredo, Texas. In 2013, there
are five roses traveling
simultaneously. The fifth rose
travels through New England
and ends its journey on the
Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe on Dec. 12 at St.
Mary’s Church in New
Haven, the birth place of the
Knights of Columbus. A sixth
route was added in 2014 and
is part of the 2015 program.
The 2015 Silver Rose
Program Beginning in April 2015, six
Silver Roses will begin their
journey across North
America, from Canada to the
United States to Mexico. The
2015 Our Lady of Guadalupe
Silver Rose - One Life, One
Rose Program will conclude
on December 12, 2015 on the
Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe, Patroness of the
Americas, at the Basilica of
Our Lady of Guadalupe in
Monterrey, Mexico.
2015 marks the 55th year of the
program which began in 1960 as
a project of the Columbian
Squires of North America to
honor the Blessed Virgin under
her title of Our Lady of
Guadalupe, Patroness of the

STATE CHAPLAIN
Americas. The program has
continued since then as a project
of Columbian Squires circles,
councils and Fourth Degree
assemblies in several
jurisdictions.
In 2001 Supreme Knight Carl
Anderson expanded the program
by beginning the "Running of the
Rose" from the 119th Annual
Meeting of the Supreme Council
in Toronto. This is "a perfect
program for the Knights of
Columbus," said Supreme
Knight Anderson. "Through it we
honor not only Our Lady of
Guadalupe and express the unity
of the Order, but we also
reaffirm the Order's dedication
to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we
turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips
our society. As we think in terms of 'One Life, One Rose,' it is most
appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made
known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses."
Today six Silver Roses travel through North America exemplifying
Knights of Columbus devotion to Our Lady and commitment to the
Culture of Life.
In 2015, one Rose begins in British Columbia and heads south along
the Pacific coast before turning east on a winding path through the
southwest and mountain states before reaching Texas. A second
Rose starts in Alberta and heads east to Saskatchewan before
entering the United States in North Dakota and travelling through
the northern US Rockies and the Great Plains on its way toward
Texas. A third Rose starts its run in Manitoba, moving south
through the central United States and along the Mississippi before
turning to Texas. A fourth Rose begins its journey in Ontario
moving through the Midwest [including Ohio] and some of the Mid-
Atlantic States before ending in Washington, D.C. A fifth Rose
begins in Virginia and journeys throughout the south on its way to
Texas. A sixth Rose starts in New Brunswick and travels
throughout the northeast, completing its journey in Connecticut.
The program ends on December 12, 2015, the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe.

MEMBERSHIP
Membership is everyone’s business. Membership needs to be worked on by
everyone 365 days a year. We must remember One Member Per Council Per
Month.
As we begin Worthy State Deputy Collins’ administration, his theme Through
Him, With Him, In Him… continues to be relevant for us in our lives as Catholics
and Knights of Columbus. We are called to grow and deepen our faith; to serve as
witnesses to our faith in our families, at work and in our daily lives. We must
bring Fr. McGivney’s dream to life by continuing the growth of the order, which is
key to its long term survival. It is incumbent on all of us as Knights to work to
ensure the organization grows and prospers. It is absolutely needed in today’s
world.
Below are the first
three statewide goals
that will lead us in the
Through Him, With
Him, In Him… state
theme
You are the key to the
growth of the Order in
Ohio and the keys to
our success for the
next two years. You
can all be leaders; you
are called to win
glorious triumphs.
Will you challenge
your Councils every day to dare to succeed? Will you work with them? Will you
help them build their plan?
One man can make a huge difference. You can make a big difference! One man’s
enthusiasm, his vision can be the difference maker. If you don’t believe that you
don’t have to look any further than the example set by our founder, Father
Michael J. McGivney for proof. He alone saw a need; he shared a vision for a
solution to a problem. That vision grew into the Knights of Columbus. You and I
and everyone reading this are charged with fulfilling that vision. That is done by
living out the principles of the Order and by expanding its influence through
membership growth.
We do have a great story to tell. It is one of charity, unity and fraternity. It is
rooted in our commitment to service and our belief in God. Our job is to tell that
story and to tell it to the best of our ability. If we do this we will truly be
Through Him, With Him, and In Him!!!
The Knights of Columbus have been known to be The Strong Right Arm of the
Church. Can you council be The Strong Right Arm of the church(s) it serves? I
feel your council cab be. This can only happen by growth. I ask all of my
Brothers across this great state to join me in bringing in a new member or more
this year. New members are the bloodline of our organization. Without them,
we have nothing. With them, we have everything. Until next month, do your
part in making your council The Strong Right Arm of the Church. Bring in a
new member or more?

RETENTION TEAM William Wirtz (West) / Michael Jordon (East)
There are many definitions of
“retention”, but unless you are
holding your water or building a
wall we believe the following
meaning applies to what we should
do as Knights. Our “retention”
relates to “the fact of keeping
something in one's memory”
or “the act or power of remembering
things.” Why use this version?
Let’s just say “retention” isnot all
about the Form1845 process. We
strongly recommend we all be more
proactive,so as to lessen the need
for the Form 1845. Let’s make
contact with our Brothers by any
means necessary to ensure they
arenot forgotten, to help them to
feel needed and respected, and to
impress upon them how they are
valued members of our fraternity.
Please allow the Holy Spirit, and
our Through Him, With Him, and
In Him program, guide our hearts
and our actions for the next two
years. Embrace the Retention
Activities Program and get creative
with your efforts to reach out to all
our current members.For questions
and assistance please don’t hesitate

SERVICE PROGRAMS
GENERAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR Robert Walsh
Greetings Brother Knights from this great State of Ohio, and welcome to this
new Fraternal Year, with our State Deputy Robert Collins.
Our program “Through Him, With Him, In Him” is designed to help your Council
to participate and excel. We have made some updates to the program, and have
kept some programs that everyone enjoys doing. To begin the year please get
your Council officers form #185 into Supreme, the State Deputy, and your
District Deputy. Also, make sure to turn in your form #365, for your Activity
Directors, this helps Supreme send information to them that can help run their
programs.
Remember that your semi-annual audit #1295 is soon due. All these forms are
part of the Administration portion of the State Program. On page 29 of the
program book is the matrix for all the programs, please look over these activities
and then have your Program Director read the description of the activity. This
would be a good time to plan out your year so that you can keep track of all your
activities.
Once again the Supreme programs are being highlighted and will max out the
program if you complete the Supreme requirements. We encourage your Council
to work toward achieving the Star Council Award. This will help bring in new
members and encourage the Council members to participate in the programs. I
would like to see every Council make Star Council this fraternal year.
The “Through Him, With Him, In Him” program will strengthen your Council
members in their Faith, and in working with other Council members. Remember
to have fun with the activities and report what you do.
CULTURE OF LIFE Gary Anderson
It is with great pleasure that we
unveil the new, updated 2015-
2017 Culture of Life Activities
Program in our great state of
Ohio, as an integral part of State
Deputy Bob Collins' "Through
Him, With Him, In Him" general
program. As our Lord admonished
us to be that shining light upon the hill, this is once again our opportunity to
shine a light upon the sanctity of human life across its entire spectrum-from
conception to natural death-and to defend the most innocent and defenseless of
our brothers and sisters. The Culture of Life program is being expanded to
include such critically important areas of focus as Religious Freedom, Marriage,
and Teen Chastity, all now under savage attack.
As the value of sacred human life is ever more questioned and subjected to
increasingly diabolical attacks-almost on a daily basis-it becomes all the more
imperative for the Knights of Columbus to stand in the breach and tell the world
that we will never, ever retreat from the front lines, whether in defense of the
innocent unborn, marriage defined as the union of a man and a woman, standing

declared, we brother knights continue to wield the
power of our “strong right arm of the Church” in
defending these most cherished ideals. Your newly
revised, expanded, and topical State Culture of Life
Activities program will provide the framework to guide
you and your council in doing just that.
Looking ahead on the calendar, now would be a great
time for your council to begin planning for the National
Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children (Activity
#50) on September 12 and the fall 40 Days for Life
campaign (Activity #47), which runs from September
23 to November 1. And let's not forget the critically
important Ultrasound Initiative campaign (Activity

ultrasound machines to qualified pregnancy care
centers. Please keep your eyes and ears constantly on
watch for such centers in need of a machine.
CHURCH Jeff Kiliany
As we begin this new Fraternal Year, it is always a
good practice to look forward and tentatively plan your
council’s activities for the upcoming year. As part of
the “Through Him, With Him, In Him” State Program,
the Church Program offers numerous suggestions to
help tend to the “Spiritual” needs of you council’s
membership. As are part of a CATHOLIC men’s
organization, we should plan activities that stress and
nurture our Faith as Catholic gentlemen. Activity #
2 ,”Religious Devotions,” and Activity #5, “Deepen Our
Faith” have several suggested activities that do just
that. Please call or e-mail with any questions. I will
be happy to assist you and your council.
VOCATIONS Joe Mackos

grow and increase in faith. We are thereby summoned
to serve as witnesses to that faith in our daily lives, in
the lives of our families, and in the lives of others

knights have always been supportive of our programs
for vocations. Council will have options to do a variety
of programs to support vocations.

AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So
many ways to talk to
people. What am I, a
Knight of Columbus,
supposed to do?
Social media is the collective of online communications
channels dedicated to community-based input,
interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.
Websites and applications dedicated to forums, social
networking , social bookmarking, and wikis are among
the different types of social media.
So, why does the Ohio State Council want to use social
media? Basically, social media is a way to connect on a
different level with our current and potential members.
Building relationships are super important and bring
us an edge when it comes to showing all the good
things that we do in the name of Jesus Christ.
We all want to be seen and heard by others. We want
to be valued for what we can offer others. We all want
to belong to a community of others who value what we
value—who are, in some important way, like us. What
happens when an act of charity, unity or fraternity
fulfills these wants? People stick around for more.
Climb the hill and spread the word—The Ohio State
Council is out there. We want to here from you on
what your councils, assemblies and circles are doing.
We want to engage in conversations on topics relevant
to the Catholic church and Knights. We want to be
there for you.
Take an active part, be engaged and get involved. You
will be glad that you did. Feel free to contact me at

during the campaign, and the
first $25,000 donated is
matched by the Knights’ Ohio
Charity Foundation. Our
theme this year is “Providing
needs for Catholic Education.”
Our goal this year is to reach
$70,000 combined with a 100%
participation of our Ohio councils. I
would hope that all councils across
this great state will contribute as
generously as they have in past
years.
There are several ways to fund your
council’s donation to the Matching
Funds Program:
Donate a portion of your Super
Cash Bonanza Charity Ticket
rebate
Host a council fundraising event
with proceeds earmarked for the
fund
Pass the hat for donations at
council meetings
Ask your members to make a
personal pledge to the Matching
Funds Program.
Remember to appoint a Matching
Funds chairman and contribute
early in the campaign, so that your
donation will be matched.
Please make your council check out
to the “Ohio State Council Knights
of Columbus,” and mail this form
with the donation to: Mark
Siracusa, State Advocate, 1310
Markey Drive, Bryan, OH
43506-2589.
Awards will be presented at
the Mid-Year District
Deputies’ Meeting in
January , 2016: The
following is a list of the
year’s awards:
The highest donation
overall by a council
The highest donation by
a council in each diocese
The highest donation
per member of a council in each
diocese
The highest donation by a
chapter, an assembly or a
squire’s circle will each receive
an award
For those district deputies with

Our 2015 statewide goal is
$450,000 (or more!), with
100% of our local councils
participating.

FORMS
My Brother Knights,
Welcome to the new fraternal year. As the new State Forms Chairman I would
like to call to your attention the importance of Supreme Forms submittal and the
impact these forms have on the success for your council in the upcoming
Fraternal Year. As always communication is the key to success in any endeavor.
Forms submitted to Supreme Council and copies to the State Council are a vital
component of this communication process.
Administration Forms are a requirement and their timing of submittal is critical
for Star council and Special Program awards in the individual State Programs.
Administration Forms should be submitted to the proper Supreme address and copies whether paper or
electronic should be submitted to the State Forms Chairman based on the Table below:
Please utilize the Table above and the Forms Checklist provided on page 30 of the General Program book. This
checklist is an excellent tool that will help you succeed this next fraternal year.
Copies should be sent to the State Forms Chairman at the indicated address below:

STATE ROAD TRIP 2015
It might not
be the Beatles
reunion, but
you have a great opportunity to meet
and greet the State Team.
To the right is the schedule for the
State Road Trip 2015 where we will be
making stops in each of the Diocese.
Join us 90-minutes before the meeting
to share a simple KofC meal and have
some great fellowship (except in Tiffin
where we will get together after the
meeting).
