Red Fang doesn’t hold back when it’s time to shred — or whip their hair back and forth.
Just rock. That’s the music the
Oregon four-piece RedFang deals in.
Not rap-rock, not indie-rock or any other hyphenate.
Red Fang drives a pound-ing, head-banging beat in itslatest album, Murder theMountains. The vocals areabout what you’d expect, too— growling and gravel-gulletstuff. Witness it firsthandSaturday night at Rubber
Gloves Rehearsal Studios. Red Fang is the project of
longtime friends and collabo-rators Bryan Giles, AaronBeam, David Sullivan andJohn Sherman, whose otherbands have included Last ofthe Juanitas, Party Time andDark Forces.
The long-haired, beardedrockers stop in Denton at thehead of a short tour thatstrikes out from North Texastoward Houston and finally
New Jersey. After that, RedFang will be crossing theAtlantic.
Sounds like: Mayhem atthe skate park. Or Saturdaynight at your friendly neigh-borhood biker bar.
Details: Doors open at 8p.m. Saturday at RubberGloves, 411 E. Sycamore St.Cover is $10 for ages 21 andolder, $12 for those youngerthan 21.

MOVIES
Hair of the dogBy Roger MooreMcClatchy-Tribune News Service
Most movie musicals, evenin the age of Glee, still face thatawkward moment when some-body — say her name is SherrieChristian — bursts into“Motoring” by Night Rangerwhile aboard a Greyhound, and the rest of the bus bursts into join her for the chorus.
Audiences today titter atthat.
But you measure the movieby how quickly we get over it.
Rock of Ages, the big-screenversion of the jukebox musicalset to ’80s “hair metal” an-thems and ballads, never does. The all-star cast is game, butthe filmmakers can’t stopwinking and mocking themockable music and the eralong enough to let the picture, built around over-the-top
tunes by Foreigner, Bon Jovi,Journey and others, pay off.
It’s enough to make you“stop believin’.”
Tom Cruise, as burnt-outrocker Stacee Jaxx, will do hisbest Axl Rose impression —bare-chested belting, waving amic stand bedecked in scarves— or Diego Boneta, aspiringmetal singer, will tear intoForeigner’s “One Guitar,” orAlec Baldwin and RussellBrand and the rest of the castblast “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll,”and director Alan Shankman
(Hairspray) will go for somecheap laugh and utterlyundercut the moment.
Maybe the music, the fash-ion, the whole rapacioustestosterone vibe of that span-dex, eye-shadow, poodle-haired era is laughable. But it’sone thing to poke fun at some-thing, quite another to attackit with utter contempt.
Rock of Ages, which discardsquite a bit of the book of thestage musical it’s based on,swirls around Jaxx, who stag-gers onstage for his farewellshow at the Sunset Strip’sfamed “Bourbon Room,” andprepares to launch a solocareer. Sherrie, a new waitressand would-be singer (JulianneHough), and bartender-gui-tarist Drew (Boneta) dream ofliving the rock-god life Staceeleads.
The Bourbon Room is un-der pressure from the mayor’swife (Catherine Zeta-Jones),who pledges to “clean upSunset Strip” and “take Satanoff our streets.” She and herfellow Mothers Against DrunkRockers then kick into arowdy-raunchy rendition of“Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”
Drew writes songs forSherrie, Sherrie moons overDrew, but fame ruins romancein La La Land.
“The spotlight doesn’t justlight them up. It makes us dis-appear,” another waitresswarns Sherrie.
Thus, does Miss Innocentfrom Oklahoma wind up in astrip club run by Mary J. Blige, who delivers what passes for ashow-stopper here — “AnyWay You Want it,” with a cho-reographed crew of very ath-
letic pole dancers behind her.You will be amazed at the
actors who take on singing, often for the first time on-screen (Baldwin, Malin Aker-man as a sexy Rolling Stonereporter, Paul Giamatti asStacee’s sleazy manager) anddon’t embarrass themselves.Cruise, in particular, is ademented delight to watch, alljewel-encrusted dragon’s headcodpiece, buttless chaps andself-serious drunken swagger.
But the songs, with a fewexceptions, lack the urgency ofthe original renditions. Theleads (Hough and Boneta) areso bland and thin-voiced thatthey seem out of step with1987.
Seriously, Brother Shank-man, what’s the point of mak-ing “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll: TheMusical,” if you don’t?

COVER STORY
By Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor
Miss Nelson Is Missing is tailor-made for a child’s amusement. The musical has bright, bouncy
songs, huge characters and a lot of action. Cristin Thomas ia back at the helm of the
third summer of Texas Woman’s Univer-sity’s theater for children and young people.
Thomas and TWU have a simple goal:produce lively theater for a young audience.
Miss Nelson is based on the 1984 illus-trated children’s book by Harry Allard andJames Marshall. The story is about a classfull of awful kids. Spitballs compete forface-space with paper airplanes. The con-cept of an “inside voice” is nonexistent.
And authority? The pupils in MissNelson’s class recognize none. Theharangued teacher can either throw in thetowel, or roll up her sleeves.
“This year is our first year to do a musi-cal,” said Thomas, who came to TWU forsummers only with a resume heavy on suc-cessful children’s theater. “We want it to begood educationally for our students, and wewant it to be a professional show for ouraudience.”
Thomas said she and the university’s the-ater program chairwoman, Sharon Benge, read a host of plays for young audienceswhen scheduling the summer class. MissNelson had the right combination of action, music and narrative. The musical is sur-prisingly funny — it won’t punish adults forthe sake of making kids squeal.
“I loved this book. I always thought theidea that your teacher might dress up toscare you to make you behave is kind of

funny,” Thomas said. “We madea few changes. The musical wasoriginally written for two boysand two girls in Miss Nelson’srambunctious class.
“We made this an all-girlschool,” Thomas said recently.“So many people have wantedto be involved that we haven’teven had a full [technical]rehearsal yet, but we’re aheadof schedule.”
The set — often one of thelast elements to be finished —is a feast for young eyes. Thereis a green and white parlor-style floor, and bright yellowclassroom walls embellishedwith light and dark bluestripes. Lunchboxes and back-packs are stuffed into a wall ofbright orange cubby boxes.
The elementary school girlswear uniforms that would bethe envy of hipsters every-where, too. Colorful polo shirtsare tucked haphazardly intoschool uniform skirts — overshorts — and each girl wearstube socks that correspond tothe bright Converse tennisshoes.
Thomas said Miss Nelson issuitable for children in firstthrough fourth grade.
“I don’t tell parents not tobring younger kids than that,”she said. “Some kids can sitthrough a show like this by thetime they’re 3 years old. Mykids have been in the theateraudience ever since they werewee bitty.”
The musical will be aboutone hour long with no inter-mission, Thomas said. Most of

fictitious oil-rich African country
Wadiya. He comes to America, loses
his trademark beard, lands with a
Brooklyn feminist (Anna Faris), and
then tries to win his country back as
well as his new girlfriend. Over-the-
top silliness filled with insults and
fish-out-of-water humor provide plen-
ty of laughs, however squirm-induc-
ing. Rated R, 83 minutes. — B.A.

OPENING FRIDAYThat’s My Boy Estranged for years
from the son he had and raised as a
young man, a father shows up unin-
vited on the eve of the son’s wedding
in hopes of reconnecting. With Adam
Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton
Meester and James Caan. Directed
by Sean Anders. Rated R, 115 min-

NOW PLAYINGThe Avengers () Superheroes
from Marvel Comics unite to face an
otherworldly foe (Tom Hiddleston) in
this assembling of franchise war-
riors: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.),
Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk
(Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy
Renner), Captain America (Chris
Evans) and the Black Widow
(Scarlett Johansson). Joss Whedon
wrote and directed, delivering a sat-
isfying, if exhausting, rendition of
good versus evil. Rated PG-13, 142
minutes. — Boo Allen
Battleship () This is big, dumb
fun that knows it’s big, dumb fun and
enthusiastically embraces its big,
dumb fun nature. Alex Hopper
(Taylor Kitsch) is a lieutenant on one
naval destroyer while his older broth-
er, Stone (Alexander Skarsgard), is
the commanding officer of another.
Both answer to Adm. Shane (a with-
ering, well-cast Liam Neeson).
They’re all taking part in some inter-
national war games off the Hawaiian
coast when a satellite signal pro-
vokes some angry extraterrestrials.
Rated PG-13, 131 minutes. — The
Associated Press
Bernie (1/2) Jack Black is the pic-
ture of silliness in this whimsical,
fact-based film set in Carthage. He
plays a good-natured, well-loved
funeral home employee who be-
friends a local widow (Shirley
MacLaine) known for her cruelty and
stinginess. But with Bernie, she blos-
soms, taking him on trips and spend-
ing money freely. That is, until she
turns up dead. Matthew McConau-
ghey plays the eventual prosecutor.
Directed by Richard Linklater. Rated
PG-13, 104 minutes. — B.A.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Agroup of British retirees travel to
India to spend their golden years at a
newly restored hotel but find the
accommodations to be less than
palatial. With Judi Dench, Bill Nighy,
MOVIES
that their act was not too entertain-
ing for families “because you were
just going through the motions out
there.” So, too, for Madagascar 3,
which goes through a lot of motions.
The result: A cute story about zoo
animals running off to join the circus
becomes overwhelmed by a blur of
color and animated acrobatics. Rated
PG, 92 minutes. — AP
Men in Black 3 () Josh Brolin
impersonating the young Tommy Lee
Jones is worth the price of admission
to Men in Black 3. Dry, drawling,
deadpan — he nails the flinty Texan
in this sentimental sequel to the sci-
fi comedies about secret agents in
black suits who save the world from
aliens. An alien serial killer (Jemaine
Clement) has traveled back in time to
save the arm that Agent K shot off in
1969, and Agent J (Will Smith) must
go back and save his future partner.
If director Barry Sonnenfeld has lost
his fastball, Smith has lost a step or
two running the bases. Rated PG-13,
105 minutes. — McClatchy-Tribune

Prometheus () Director
Ridley Scott delivers a suspenseful
prequel to his 1979 classic Alien. The
similar plot sees a spaceship ventur-
ing into outer space only to find trou-
ble. Scott combines technical
improvements with good storytelling
while also adding several jolts of ter-
ror. With Noomi Rapace, Charlize
Theron and Michael Fassbender.
Rated R, 124 minutes. — B.A.
Snow White & the Huntsman(
1/2) Director Rupert Sanders’
revisionist take on the classic
Brothers Grimm fable upends expec-
tations of traditional gender roles
while simultaneously embracing
what a fairy tale should be. It’s dark
and dangerous, vicious and violent.
And yet the performances — notably
from Kristen Stewart as the title
character — don’t always live up to
the film's visionary promise. With
Charlize Theron and Chris Hems-
worth. Rated PG-13, 125 minutes. —
