“Empowering the envelope in a digi-tal world” – since the times of dru-pa, we have set ourselves the goal of promoting envelopes as a competi-tive medium for communicating in a digital world. Global companies like Apple, Google and Facebook have recognized the same, and increa-singly rely on direct mailings to raise response. From QR codes to aug-mented reality applications, there are many paths to the Internet.
It comes as no surprise that we see
the envelope market’s best opportu-
nities for future growth in the direct
marketing sector, so together with the
associations VDBF and FEPE, we are
organizing Direct Mail Days to take
place in Neuwied from June 28-29.
Your invitation and event itinerary for
both days, along with an overview of
exhibition partners, can be found in
the shape-cut envelope attached to

event that is free for visitors, but since
we can only allow a limited number

W+D BB550 XL live at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017
W+D BB700 S2 at the Grafische Vakbeurs trade fair in the Netherlands
W+D presented its new W+D BB550 XL multi-format envelope inserting system at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017 (HID). With more than double the number of visitors as two years before, the system ensured a new re-cord attendance at the W+D booth. Many of the trade fair participants wanted to take a closer look at the highly efficient inserting system which had just been introduced to the market, to convince themselves of its newly developed features.
At the trade fair, it became clear that
flexibility is one of the W+D BB550 XL’s
most distinctive features. It can reliably
fill all common types of mail ranging
from multiple personalized C6/DL
transactional or direct mail deliveries
from finance and insurance to card-
board C4 shipping bags for express
shipments.
However, the W+D BB550 XL is not
only extremely versatile in its formats,
but is also the only inserting system to
process personalized and stapled pro-
ducts with a total packaging thickness
of up to 25 mm. This unique feature
is partly achieved with the new feeder
type W+D CF2 (catalog feeder), which
is able to process products with a va-
riable thickness of 1-10 mm without
the need for any adjustments. At
Hunkeler Innovationdays, for instance,
chocolate bars were attached to the
boxed sample mailings.
You’ll find a video of the W+D
BB550 XL on our website and on our
Winkler+Dünnebier youtube channel.
All Mailing Solutions, W+D’s sales
partner in the Netherlands, as the
sole exhibitor presented an inserting
system live, the W+D BB700 S2.
Visitors were able to personally
see the machine in action, ask
questions and witness the diverse
possibilities of the envelope
inserting machine.
In March, a total of 13,000 people made their way to Gorinchem in the Netherlands for the Grafische Vakbeurs and Vakbeurs Sign double trade fair. Most of the curious visitors were local residents or from nearby Belgium and Germany.

W+D acquires printing machine manufacturer Halm Industries
In April, W+D acquired the Ame-rican company Halm Industries, a leading manufacturer of offset and digital printing systems, in a move to strengthen our position as a long-standing technology, system solution and service partner for the envelope and mail industry. W+D’s goal is not only to expand and enrich relation-ships with existing Halm customers, but also to optimize the service for the globally installed base of offset printing machines, as well as the sale of the new four-color digital printing machine Jet Press D415MJ for enve-lope overprinting.
“The new digital printing machine
serves the growing customer
demand for individualization and
production of small quantities. That
makes it a perfect complement to
the highly flexible and user-friendly
production solutions from W+D for
the processing, inserting and printing
of envelopes,” says Frank Eichhorn,
Managing Director of W+D.
Halm customers in Europe will be
able to continue with their existing
contacts in Warmond. In the US, team
members will move to W+D North
America in Duncansville where they
will continue to be of service.
Lenexa, KS W+D North America
announces the sale of its first 410
Easy Enveloper to Sun Solutions of
West Columbia, South Carolina. Andy
Cook, President of Sun Solutions,
observes “the 410 Easy Enveloper lets
us accelerate our time to the mail
box from week(s) to just days and
dramatically cuts our waste factor - no
more reprints or extra freight costs!”
Mr. Cook sees additional benefits
of the 410 Easy Enveloper, too, for
downstream processing. “As the
largest independent mail house in
South Carolina, with the 410 Easy
Enveloper we can exactly
control the shape of the
flap, throat and side seams
of the envelope run after
run for greater consistency
and productivity.”
Easy Enveloper at less than 2 percent rejectionEven as the W+D 410 Easy Enveloper
was only just installed in Germany in
October 2016, it was already clear
that its rejection rate was less than 2
percent on average. After reformatting
or when the machine restarts, for
instance, the system immediately picks
back up
with high productivity from the first
envelope. In addition, via the process
of the drying chain all of the envelopes
are transported to the storage tray as
quality products. This offers you and
your customers enormous savings
potential in terms of material costs
and time.
First W+D 410 Easy Enveloper in USA sold to Sun Solutions
The team from Halm in Warmond received a warm welcome from W+D in Neuwied.

Innovairre benefits from supportive partnership with W+D
Innovairre Communications, LLC is the worldwide leader in fundraising, and nonprofit communications. Headquartered in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA, its more than 4,000 employees deliver over five billion fundraising communication pieces per year. With the motto “innovate for good,” Innovairre with its more than 4,000 employees supports over 500 organizations across five continents. The company produces around five billion direct marketing media for their fundraising campaigns.
To enhance the creative flexibility and
productivity of its growing not-for-
profit direct mail segment, Innovairre
purchased 7 W+D BB700 inserters,
but important for Innovairre was
the condition that both companies
acknowledged they were entering into
a long-term partnership. Innovairre
and W+D agreed that the challenge
of introducing highly automated and
flexible technology configured to run
unique and complex applications to
an unaccustomed workforce would
require a long-term investment and
commitment from both companies.
In addition to seven different inserter
machines at sites in Virginia and Iowa,
the communications company added
a W+D 102 envelope converting
machine to its existing fleet in the
summer of 2016 to augment the
company’s in-house envelope
manufacturing capacity and to
achieve better control of its complex
manufacturing value chain.
John Hartwell, Chief Operating
Officer at Innovairre, reflects positively
on the immediate influence of the
W+D partnership, “not only with
accessibility, but all the resources
that have been made available to us
as we’ve brought on technologies –
the engineering support both here
locally in North America and from
Germany. This equipment is relatively
new for this industry. We can’t just
plug in what we’ve done a hundred
times before. We have to learn as we
go, and W+D has been very patient
with the process.”
Flexibility strengthens partnership
Innovairre may serve the greater
good, but in the US in particular we
face the challenges associated with
peak period production extremes.
Between September and January,
appeals communications ramp up
markedly as fundraising efforts reach
their peak and “our business can
literally almost double within that
four-month period,” Hartwell explains.
“W+D appreciates the fact that our
business is not an even stream and
they’ve been very supportive while
we’ve been busy and then taken
their foot off the gas when it made
sense. That’s how we’ve been able to
continually develop with them.”

NEW: SLC Smart Upgrade
Hygiene Trade Fairs in 2017 – CIDPEX 2017 in China and INDEX in Switzerland
In the course of technical interface progress, some components for the machine control system in W+D machines, such as modules and communication cards, are no longer available. Our suppliers have either discontinued their production or replaced them with other components that are not 1:1 compatible with existing hardware.
The industry in Europe kept infor-med on the latest developments in hygiene products and nonwovens at the INDEX in Geneva this year, where producers, processors, raw material suppliers and machine manufacturers meet only every three years.
From April 4-7, W+D introduced new
ultra-thin hygiene products beside
its better-known machine upgrades.

Whether Deutsche Post in Germany or USPS in the US: if you’re a service provider offering direct mail design and shipment, don’t shy away from using shape-cut envelopes, which are highly automated and qualify for special direct marketing postal rates.
W+D North America received its first USPS approval (case no. 80320, September 12, 2016) for automated mail handling of shape-cut envelopes for its “cube” shaped envelopes (see sample in InFocus November 2016). Samples must first be sent to the USPS Pricing and Classification Service Center in New York where the automation potential of your shape-cut envelopes is assessed. The effort is worth it – qualification takes the price per letter down from the usual 59 cents to only 38.
For a tried and true approach to designing and submitting shape-cuts in the US, check out Mail Solutions / Applications / Envelope / Special envelopes.
For quick approval of your creative envelope forms, please contact your local post office in advance.
