SEPTEMBER 2012
PPrreessiiddeenntt’’ss MMeessssaaggee::
Greetings to you all! I sure hope you have survived this hot and dry summer. As I write this I imagine we are as stressed out by the drought as are the plants and animals of the area. Yet we are so very much better off than those in the Midwest. It seems the
animals are eating more of my plants than usual and I suspect it is because of the scarcity of water.
Congratulations to the singers for presenting themselves so well at the Saengerfest in Poughkeepsie. Dr. Knauth is to be credited with keeping us on target and upbeat. The scores were respectable and the adjudicators’ comments were fair, encouraging and constructive. Thank you to all.
The Maennerchor trip to the Thousand Islands was a treat. The weather cooperated, we had a fun and good bus driver, the St. Lawrence Seaway glistened, and the food was super. We had a box lunch on one of our trips that definitely rated five stars. The trip in December to Longwood Gardens and Philadelphia promises to be a good one and we encourage you to participate. One word of caution though, the Longwood Gardens portion of the trip will entail a fair amount of walking. If you have major mobility issues consider carefully before signing up. There is room on the bus for wheelchairs to be stored if that solves your situation.
As many of you know, our treasurer, Joan Arena, passed away in June after a long and courageous battle with cancer. At the beginning of January 2012 we engaged an assistant treasurer, Angela Hartrum, so that Joan could continue in her position as treasurer. With Joan’s passing Angela
joined the club and at our last business meeting was elected treasurer. We welcome Angela and know that she will be an asset to the club. She knows our club well as she is the daughter of vice-president Alina Nitzschner.
We’re still looking for singers!! Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Basses. Where are you!! Meanwhile, fall is coming, enjoy!!
Hildegard
Call For Singers
Our chorus will begin again on September 10th, the
Monday after Labor Day. Would you like to sing with us
at our Herbst Konzert in November or the German
Christmas Celebration in December? We cordially invite
you to join us at our Monday evening rehearsals to
participate in these events. Don't miss out on another great
year of fun and camaraderie. Rehearsal begins at 6:45 PM.
For further information please
checkout our website at www.nyssb.org/KMD.htm
Become a
Monday Knight
Yes Monday is rehearsal night, BUT we are open for all members. While the singers are rehearsing Richard is manning the barroom. Stop in to visit, renew friendships and make new ones. It would be especially nice if former singers would drop in. We miss you.
The club is open from approximately 6:15 to 9:00 p.m. most Monday evenings from September to May. If in doubt, call first.

Music directors and singers around the state sharpened their choral skills, exercised their vocal cords, and reenergized their minds and souls then came to Poughkeepsie in June to rekindle and rededicate their Germanic traditions of choral singing in sängerfest.
Congratulations to all participating singers and members; you can all be proud of your work in maintaining and sustaining our cultural heritage through your dedication to our customs and traditions in the sängerbund community.
HHeerrzzlliicchheenn DDaannkk to the Germania Singing Society of Poughkeepsie for hosting this triennial singing festival. Your hard work and friendship will be remembered and cherished in fond memories by all of us throughout the state.
I also want to acknowledge and thank the societies who, although they could not participate in the choral aspects of the fest, nevertheless stood tall and supported our mutual efforts with ads, donations, and overall encouragement.
New York State Sängerbund Convention 13 & 14 October 2012
The Utica Maennerchor will be hosting the annual fall convention of the NYSSB on Saturday and Sunday, October 13th and 14th. Susanna joined the Maennerchor on April 11, 2012.
She joined along with her sister, Gladys Skura, and
her brother, Bill Paulus. She was introduced by
Walter Bruchholz and joined as a supporting
member. She was born and raised in Kingston,
attending local schools. She went to college for a
short time intending to study nursing. But love
intervened when she met her future husband,
Frederik. She worked for three years at the New
York Telephone Co. in Kingston. After getting
married she decided to stay home and become a
mom. She and Fred hat 4 children and now she has
8 grandchildren. Sadly, Fred passed away in 2004
after 40 plus years together.
Sue is an ardent traveler. She has family with three
grandchildren in Colorado, three grandchildren in
Georgia and two locally in Ulster Park where Sue
also lives. She is a member of local chapter 2039
AARP. She also is a member of the Town of
Esopus Seniors and was their secretary for two
years. As I said, Sue loves to travel and with
Brother Bill coordinating trips for the local AARP,
I’m sure there is plenty of opportunity.

Gladys was introduced to the Maennerchor by
Walter Bruchholz. She was accepted for
membership on April 11, 2012 as a supporting
member. Gladys was born in Kingston and now
lives in Hurley, NY. She and her husband Vincent
recently celebrated their 58th
wedding anniversary.
Congratulations to you both. They have 5 children
and 8 grandchildren. I’m sure that keeps them both
pretty busy.
Gladys taught school for 25 years. She taught at
Rondout Valley and at Arlingston. Now that she is
retired, Gladys likes to travel. She is a member of
AARP and as her brother, Bill Paulus, was
instrumental in getting trips organized, Gladys is an
assistant group leader. She is also Vice President
IINNTTRROODDUUCCIINNGG Continued
of the First Capital Casino Club. They visit a
casino about twice a month. She belongs to the
American Legion and she was President of that for
four years. She is a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church and is active in the Church Women’s Club
and she does volunteer work for RSVP which is
another senior group. During the winter, Gladys
and Vincent travel to Florida where they have many
friends to enjoy the warm weather together.

Bill was introduced to the Maennerchor for
membership by Walter Bruchholz. However, Bill
was very familiar with the club through the bands
he played with as a drummer. He also, in recent
years, played for many senior events.
Bill is a native Kingstonian. He graduated from
Kingston High School in 1944. He worked for
Arace Television and Pilgrim Furniture Co. as an
upholsterer. Bill thinks he owned one of the first
televisions in Kingston. It was a Dumont TV. In
the early 50’s he went to work for the Bank of
Manhattan in New York City. He did two years of
graduate school at Indiana University to earn a
license for investment programs. While at the Bank
of Manhattan, a friend told him of an opening with
the West Point Band. So he quit his job at the bank,
was told he was accepted for the band and then was
told they gave the position to someone else. He
decided to come back to Kingston and found
employment with the Homeseeker Savings and
Loan in 1953. He stayed with Homeseekers until
the 1980’s in the management program.
Eventually, he worked for the Rondout Savings
Bank for 12 years, in the investment program.
Bill started his musical career at a young age. In the
early 1940’s, he played six nights a week at a local
bar. His father had to take him there as he had no
car. The owner never hassled him about his age
because, Bill said, “I looked like I was in my
twenties”. He also played at a very popular night
club called The Barn. The City of Kingston used to
offer free concerts in the local parks and Bill was
active in those as well. Unfortunately, like so many
things today, lack of funding brought an end to that.
Bill is active in the AARP Kingston Chapter. He
has planned many, many successful trips for the
seniors. He is president of the First Capital Travel
Club. He is secretary on the board of the Ulster
County Head Start Program and is on the executive
board of the Poughkeepsie Music Union. Despite
all of his banking expertise, I really think Bill is a
musician at heart. Bill and his wife Theresa have
been married for 30 years. Sadly, Theresa is very ill,
so it has curtailed many of his activities,

Joachim was introduced to the Maennerchor by
Arne Johnson and Ed Zeboris. Joachim is also
friends and neighbors with fellow members, Earl
and Cathy Johnson. Joachim was accepted as a
member in the spring of this year and he joined as a
supporting member. He is willing to help with club
projects as long as he is available.
Joachim was born in Heilbronn, Germany. He came
to this country at 10 years of age. His family lived in
Queens, NY for 12 years and then moved up to
Saugerties, NY. He lived there about 10 yeas and
currently resides at the Hills in Port Ewen, NY.
Joachim and his wife Lois have been married 44
years. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
Their son lives in Walkill, NY and their daughter lives
in San Francisco, CA. Joachim and his wife spend a
lot of time in San Francisco to spend time with the
grandkids, their ages are 12, 7, 4 and 3 months.
Joachim was employed by the NY State Police. He
worked with Arne Johnson and Ed Zeboris. He
started at the Lake Katrine Barracks and like Arne
and Ed, he was stationed at many different barracks.
He retired after 20 years and also taught criminal
justice at BOCES in Port Ewen. He did that for 9
years. Currently, Joachim is interested in Native
American History and enjoys antiques. He is on the
Board of Directors at Peoples Place, does volunteer
work and enjoys coming to the Thursday afternoon
men’s group at the Maennerchor. Joachim’s parents
are residing at Ten Broeck Commons. They are 90
and 92 years of age and, of course, Joachim spends
a lot of time with them.

Jayne was introduced to the Maennerchor by being
put to work. In 2011 we decided to do a joint New
Years Eve party with the Sons of Norway. We
needed a bartender and Jayne’s friend, Julia Nilsen,
who is President of the Sons of Norway, and a
fellow member of the Maennerchor, recommended

Jayne. She did a great job and wound up having a
good time too. So it wasn’t hard to convince her to
join and being part German was another good
reason. She was sponsored by Walt Vogt and
joined in June 2012, as a supporting member.
Jayne was born in Poughkeepsie. She graduated
from Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, NY.
She also graduated from Dutchess Community
College where she studied law enforcement.
Currently she lives in Stanfordville, NY.
Unfortunately, Jayne is among the many, many
folks who are unemployed. She was with the NY
State Dept. of Transportation, Highway
Maintenance for 5 years. She recently had an
interview with the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. We
wish her the best of luck in her search for a new job.
Jayne is a very active girl. She loves line dancing,
square dancing, jogging and hiking. Her number
one true love is her dog, a golden retriever named
Sadie. Sadie is two years old and has helped Jayne
through some tough times. Jayne recently lost her
mom and Sadie offered a great deal of comfort.
Sadie loves jogging too.

Joan was a member of the
Maennerchor for over 20
years and served as our
Treasurer from January
2000 until her passing in
June 2012 and she served
us well. She probably
aggravated us to no end
with her probing
questions and insistence
on following certain
procedures. Those of us even slightly
mathematically challenged balked at the “event”
report form and probably gave her more grief that
we gave ourselves. Yet she patiently walked us
through whatever we needed to do. At a meeting
you could count on Joan to view things a little
differently and push us to broader considerations.
Joan loved to sing and sang second soprano then
switched to alto when we began singing only mixed
songs. She struggled with rhythm and really did
have a unique range of notes. She would invent
some along the way being either a smidge above or
below the written note. Joan and I sat next to each
other much of the time and were frequently nudging
each other about mistakes or “perceived” mistakes –
Joan’s own notes again!!
She also was instrumental in the formation of the
Kinderchor. She thoroughly enjoyed working with
that group and remained devoted to it from its
inception to its demise (the children aged out and
there were no new children to replace them.)
Many people only recently discovered Joan’s other
talents. She was an accomplished needlework artist
who did complicated cross stitching. She also did
folk art painting, stained glass, and made jewelry.
There are so many more things I could say about
Joan. I met Joan at the Trolley Museum of New
York where we both volunteered. When she told
me how much she loved to sing I asked her to check
out the Maennerchor. The rest is history as they
say. We have lost a dedicated worker but more
importantly we have lost a gentle friend.
Hildegard
“I remember best Joan’s talents. I have a stained
glass angel she made which hangs up year round
and I purchased a piece of her jewelry which I
treasure.” Inge Luettger
Joan was a dear, supportive, and loving friend; she
was one of the Guardian Angels, teacher, and
mentor of our Engelchor; and a staunch, steadfast,
and stalwart guardian of our treasury.

To Your Health Wine may be a better beverage for maintaining
strong bones than milk; at least for older women. A
new study of postmenopausal women between the
ages of 50 and 65 shows that a glass or two of wine
a night actually helps shore up their bones.
Researchers tested the bone strength of
40 moderate drinkers before, during, and
after a two-week abstention from alcohol.
They found that when the women
stopped drinking, their bones began to
shed old cells, a process called
resorption, more quickly than normal.
As postmenopausal women lose bone-
building estrogen, resorption often
outpaces the production of new bone cells,
weakening bones and increasing the risk of
fractures and osteoporosis.
But as soon as the women resumed drinking, their
resorption rates returned to normal; suggesting that
alcohol may significantly slow typical bone cell
loss. “After less than 24 hours, to see such a
measurable effect was really unexpected,” reported
Oregon State University researches.
Previous research has found that moderate drinking
leads to a host of health benefits, including lower
risks of arthritis, stroke, and cardiovascular disease.

Please mark your calendar to include our annual German Christmas Service at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at 72 Spring Street Kingston. Once again, this year three local German-American societies have joined together to sponsor and present this event:
Steuben Society of America Unit 50 Kingston Maennerchor and Damenchor
German American Club of the Northern Catskills
Many of our members have said that this non-denominational observance of Christ’s birth reminds them of similar celebrations in their home towns in Germany during their youth.
We once again will begin the event with a Christmas Musical prelude provided by the Kingston High School Brass Ensemble. The program includes Christmas greetings and biblical readings from the participating sponsors, congregational singing, and a presentation from a guest clergy.
This is a wonderful celebration of Christ’s birth and an opportunity to cultivate and expand friendships and camaraderie while rejoicing in the traditional German manner.
The service is free of charge and open to the public. Call your friends and neighbors and plan to renew your Christmas spirit and refresh your well being!

From time to time we try to highlight the adventures of our children and grandchildren. If you have an especially proud moment to share, please submit it for inclusion in our newsletter.
Our Vice President, Alina Nitzschner, is proud to
report that her son Wayne is on the army promotion
list to Lieutenant Colonel. You may remember Major
Wayne Nitzschner’s story of his assignment in
Afghanistan in our 2008 May and November
newsletters. Wayne, a graduate of Onteora Central
High School Class of 1991, currently lives with his
wife and family in Yorktown, Virginia. We are all
proud of his accomplishments, grateful for his service,
and wish him well in all of his future assignments.
Wayne and his siblings are equally proud of their
mother Alina for all her love, dedication, and support
in their early nurturing and development after the
passing of their father Oskar who they honored
recently on his 31st memorial anniversary.

Editors Note: I remember Wayne well as an outstanding
student athlete at Onteora; lettering in Football, Basketball,
and Track in addition to his dedication in maintaining high
grades in his scholastic and academic achievements.
Wayne graduated from North Carolina State University with a
Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and was
commissioned into the US Army as an Aviation Officer. He is
a rated Aviator with over 1000 flight hours in the CH-47
Chinook helicopter.
While stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan Major Nitzschner’s
primary mission was as an ORSA (Operational Research
Systems Analyst) performing mathematical analysis on
numerous problem sets for the Army.
Travel with us in 2012 We developed two - 2-Day and 1- Night Bus Trips this year. We recently enjoyed our first excursion to the Thousand Islands in August. Our next adventure will be to Philadelphia in December.

Few Americans are aware of the fact that their continent is named after the Florentine explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Even fewer probably know that it was German cartographers Martin Waldseemüller (1470-1520) and Matthias Ringmann (1482–1511) who are credited with the first recorded usage of the word America. In honor of Amerigo Vespucci they noted the name “America” for the newly discovered continent on the map “Universalis Cosmographia” in 1507.
Waldseemüller and Ringmann mistakenly believed Vespucci had discovered the New World. “We do not see why the name of the man of genius, Amerigo, who has discovered them, should not be given to these lands, as Europe and Asia have adopted the names of women."
In 2007, celebrating the 500-year-anniversary of the Waldseemüller Map, German Chancellor Angela Merkel passed the map on to the Library of Congress. Recently a new map that was probably accidentally bound into another book has been found in an archive of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich.
Waldseemüller's 1507 world map shows the Americas separate from Asia
