ADITYA Aluminium, aunit of the Metals busi-ness of theAditya BirlaGroup has set up a 24MW solar power plant atLapanga in Sambalpurdistrict.

This perfectly fits intothe grand scheme ofthings for the Odisha gov-ernment as by2022,Odisha dreams ofinstalling renewable ener-gy capacity of 2,750 mw,out of which 2,200 mwshall be from solar energy.

Inaugurated by ChiefMinister Naveen Patnaikthrough video conferenc-ing very recently, thisplant spans across 144acres of ash-filled landwith an investment of Rs151 crore.

At site, the proceed-ings were completed bythe Unit Head of AdityaAluminium – KailashPandey.

Power produced fromthe installed Solar projectwill be utilised by AdityaAluminium in the

Aluminium Smeltingprocess. The unit gainssome incentives by usinggreen energy.

According to theOdisha Renewable Policy,2016, the state hosts high-capacity captive powerplants (CPPs) which areobligated entities and arerequired to meet the solarpurchase obligation (SPO)as specified by the OdishaState ElectricityRegulatory Commission(OERC).

The entities can eitherset up their own solarprojects or purchasepower from state-fundedones to meet their SPO.

The average solarradiation for Odishastands at 5.5 kwh persquare metre, with aver-

age CUF (capacity utilisa-tion factor) at 15-17 percent for districts and closeto 300 clear sunny daysevery year.

This pollution-freegreen energy certainlyhas many advantages, butit comes with its ownshare of challenges, saysKailash Pandey, who hasa complete insight of thealuminium productionprocess.

“Smelters require aconsistent load networkand uninterrupted powersupply. For Aditya alu-minium, this load require-ment sums up to nearly658 MW which is huge. However, power fluctua-tions are very common insolar plants as power gen-eration depends on day-

light. Cloudy weather,Rains may also causehuge power swings,”Pandey points out.

Controlling turbo gen-erators during the powerswing is an upheaval taskin terms of boiler stability, electricity import andexport as we are connect-ed to the grid, he said.

Load and generationmanagement during gridislanding and blackoutconditions is anothermajor challenge.Regardless, AdityaAlumina has taken certainmeasures to overcome theissues, added Pandey.

The fluctuations inpower generation aretaken care of by the intel-ligent load shedding sys-tem, that is CompositeIslanding and LoadManagement System(CILMS).

Addition of Solarpower generation hasenabled AdityaAluminium and in turn,Hindalco to produceGreener aluminiumwhich shall lead to sus-tainability of the businessgoing forward.
