About the Institute
University of Kalyani was established by the Chief Architect of Modern Bengal, the
great philanthropist and physician Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy in the year 1960. The university is
situated in a surrounding close to the mother earth covering an area of 400 acres in Kalyani
town of West Bengal with national highway (N.H.34) on one side and the river Ganges on
the other.
The University has completed five decades of commendable service to the
development of Higher Education. The University is presently offering a number of
postgraduate programmes under four faculties namely, Science, Arts & Commerce,
Education and Engineering, Technology & Management. Two more faculties, the Faculty of
Law and the Faculty of Music & Fine Arts have been introduced recently. There are under
graduate colleges under the aegis of the University as well.
The DBT funded Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF), housed in the
Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics took its inception in the year 2006 with a view
to serve all the Life Science Departments of this university, as well as, the neighboring
institutes.
About the Workshop:
Predicting the phenotypes of mis-sense mutations uncovered by large-scale sequencing
projects is an important goal in computational biology. High-confidence predictions can be
an aid in focusing experimental and association studies on those mutations most likely to be
associated with causative relationships between mutation and disease. When a sequence
variation is found in a candidate gene for a disease, it is important to establish whether this
change is neutral or responsible for the observed disorders in a patient. To answer this
question, in the absence of further experimental investigations, several simulation programs
have been proposed to predict whether a non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphism
is likely to have or not have a deleterious effect on the phenotype.
Organizing this national workshop on “In Silico Analysis of Mutations” is an attempt to
introduce the participants about the principles behind various genetic disorders.
Eligibility:
Faculty members from Universities and affiliated colleges, Scientists and Scholars from R &
D Institutes, Professionals from Industries and Biotech companies, Post-Graduates and
Under-Graduate Students working in the field of Bioinformatics/Computational Biology with
sound biology knowledge are welcome to register for the workshop.
As the numbers of participants are limited to 30, selection will be done on a first
come, first served basis.
Invited speaker
Prof. KARTIKI V DESAI, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), Kalyani, India.
Prof. Desai did her PhD from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in the year 1999. She
then did her first postdoctoral work in the National Cancer Institute, NIH, Bethesda, USA
between 1999 to 2004. She was the Research Associate in the Division of Johns Hopkins,
Singapore between 2005- 2006. She was the Research Scientist, at the Genome Institute of
Singapore before joining the NIBMG in 2011.
