+How To Fit It In?
Some suggestions…
+Background Groups
A background group is a group of students who work together to the left or right of the guided reading group that is meeting with the teacher.
In reality, this is a guided reading group that is not meeting with the teacher, but is working independently next to him/her. They will be much more “on task” with the assignment because of the proximity to the teacher.
+Scheduling Example Three ten minute groups a day. Two background groups a day.

+What is the Background Group doing?
Reading boxes are used by emergent and beginning readers who need to be reading short, familiar stories and texts over and over again.
This will increase fluency, build sight vocabulary and increase comprehension.
They are also used with fluent readers who are not comfortable with or motivated to read longer books.
