KITCHEN FIRE SAFETYKITCHEN FIRE SAFETY MUST-HAVES
Every kitchen should have the following safety essentials on-hand:
• Fire Extinguisher: An ABC Dry Chemical fire extinguisher is the best option since it won’t accelerate grease fires. Read the instructions and know how to operate it.
• Smoke Detector: A smoke detector with a pause button is best in case of false alarms. Neighboring rooms to the kitchen should also have smoke detectors.
• Oven Mitts: Protect those hands with a thick, durable pair.
SAFE HOME COOKIN’
Be a safe chef in your home by remembering these safety practices, and prevent a fire from ever starting:
• Don’t leave your cooking unattended. Checking your email or watching TV can wait until you’ve switched off the burner.
• Keep your cooking area clean to prevent grease buildup.
• Have nothing flammable near the stove. Keep curtains, potholders, dishtowels, food packaging, and mom’s recipe cards away from the stove.
• Heat cooking oil slowly. Be patient with those French fries; heating oil too quickly can easily start a fire.
COOKING WITH YOUR LITTLE CHEFS
It may be unavoidable for kids to resist the pleasant smells wafting from the kitchen. Kids often want to help cook, so bear in mind the following tips:
• Enforce a “kid-free zone.” Young children should be kept at least 3 feet away from the stove while older family members are cooking to avoid accidents and spills.
• Use the back burners and turn pot handles toward the center of the range. This will keep hot items out of a child’s
reach and reduce the risk of spills.• Teach children that hot things can burn.• Never hold a child while cooking.
IF A COOKING FIRE STARTS
• Water and grease don’t mix. In the event of a grease fire, NEVER POUR WATER ON IT. It will spread. Use a fire extinguisher, or when in doubt, get out and call for help.
• Put a lid on it. If a pan catches fire, slide a lid over the pan and turn off the stove burner. Leave the lid on until it is completely cool.
• Keep the oven or microwave door shut if fire starts. Turn off the heat. If the flames do not go out immediately, get out and call for help.
• Stop, drop and roll. If your clothes catch fire, smother them on the kitchen floor before getting out of the house.

HOW TO AVOID
INJURIESON THE GOLF COURSEthis Summer
(NC) For even the best of us golf can be a frustrating sport. The precision, patience, resiliency, and mental strength required challenges even the most talented and lev-el-headed participants. With that being said golf is one of the most popular Cana-dian summer past times and is enjoyed by Canadians of all skill levels. While golf will undoubtedly test our mental strength, it can be even more taxing on our bodies. The constant bending over, repetitive swing motion, and hot weather conditions take a physical toll.
Here are some tips from the Ontario Chi-ropractic Association to help prepare your body for a round of golf and avoid injury:
FIND YOUR SWING It is very easy for amateur golfers to injure themselves by repeatedly doing an incorrect swing. Every-one’s swing is different, but it is important to work with a swing that benefits our game and body. Consulting with a professional before hitting the links will help develop our game and avoid injury.
THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT Wearing proper golf attire goes beyond simply look-ing the part. Your playing partners will be intimidated when they see you strut to the tee box looking like Jordan Spieth; that is until you flub your first drive 20 yards right into the water. Wearing soft spike golf shoes gives you greater shock absorption
and cushioning. This helps your back in both the short and long term.
PREPARATION Always make sure to stretch your muscles prior to and after a round of golf. We may be in a rush to reach the 19th hole, but it is important to cool our muscles down after a strenuous round.
CARRYING YOUR BAG Lugging your golf bag around the course adds a lot of unnecessary stress to your body. Elect to either drive a golf cart or else push your pull your bag using a golf bag cart.
HYDRATE Hydration is fundamental to success and safety in any sport. This is mag-nified when we are playing an outdoor sport during the summer. Drinking water helps decrease your risk of injury and fatigue when on the golf course.

CELL PHONER E C Y C L I N G
IS AN EASY CALL(NC) Most of us have owned on average three or four cell phones prior to our current one. That means that a lot of us likely have a slew of old devices that are either getting hidden away in junk drawers or disposed of incorrectly.
Recycle My Cell, Canada’s free cell phone recycling program, makes it easy to dispose of your old devices responsibly. Visit www.RecycleMyCell.ca and enter your postal code to locate the drop-off locations closest to you where your old wireless devices will be
accepted, regardless of brand or condition. If you can’t get to one of the drop-off locations in your neighborhood, the web site offers a printable postage-paid label that can be used to mail the device back to Recycle My Cell at absolutely no cost. After your device is received, it is sent to a processor where it can be refurbished or broken down.
“Thinking green doesn’t need to be complicated, and keeping old cell phones out of our landfills couldn’t be easier,” says Bernard Lord, president & CEO of the
Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. “I encourage all Canadians to take a few moments to reflect on some of the simple things they can do to help protect the environment for future generations.”
Businesses and community organizations across the country can also help communities go green by hosting a Recycle My Cell drop-off location. Registration is quick and easy, and pre-paid shipping and promotional materials are provided at no cost. For more information, contact [email protected].

WEEKEND DIY:
DO A DECK M A K EOV ERquickly like a Pro
(NC) All it takes is one day of work to revive some of the most tired or neglected outdoor spaces. Did you know, for example, that there are a wide variety of do-it-yourself products these days, some of which can make deck restoration so easy? One weekend is all you need to transform the look of your backyard – and it’s true that refinishing your deck can be done in just three simple steps:
PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK SPACE
Wet the plant life around the deck then cover to protect against product run-off. Wear old clothes, protective glasses and gloves. Clear the deck of all furniture and decorative items.
PREPARE THE SURFACE
It’s important to clean the deck first, according to manufacturers of the Thompson’s WaterSeal products. An effective solution is their Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner, but be sure to follow the usage instructions. These products should be applied with a staining brush and then rinsed with a garden hose or pressure washer. Then repair loose screws or damaged boards on the deck surface.
APPLY THE SEALER
Allow the deck to dry from the rinse for a few hours and then you can protect the surface. Another popular DIY product for the job is Thompson’s WaterSeal Advanced Formula. Available in clear, honey gold, nutmeg brown, and natural cedar finishes, it can be easily matched to exterior paint or siding.
To prolong the life of your equipment when you are finished, clean it thoroughly with soap and water.

HOW TO PROTECT
& REVITALIZE
OUTDOOR FURNITURE(NC) Times have changed. Outdoor living has evolved past the solitary picnic table in the shade of a tree, or a couple of folding chairs on a patio slab.
Today we live in the age of multi-level decks, sunshades, pergolas, privacy curtains, coffee conversation furniture and outdoor kitchens, all of it creating a warm and inviting area where you can relax and enjoy the warmer months. Integration of cushions, throw pillows and an umbrella can also add the type of style and beauty that takes your living room outdoors.
Most outdoor fabrics contain built-in protection, but the more it spends time in the elements, the more this protective layer can break down and wear off. Material
that is exposed outside is likely to show signs of fading and over time it will start to absorb water. Since no one likes to sit on a wet cushion, consider protecting fabrics before this happens – and applying a quick and innovative spray product can do it. The Thompson’s WaterSeal brand points out, for example, that their Fabric Seal is a popular formula with a UV retardant. It protects many outdoor fabrics from rain and UV rays, including:
• Canvas awnings• Tents• Umbrella• Outdoor cushions• Hammocks• Sports, fishing and hunting gear• Patio chairs
If your furniture has been outside without protection a multipurpose cleaning product for fabrics, furniture, vinyl sidings, and wood surfaces is also recommended by Thompson’s. Their Oxy cleaner line is bio-degradable and won’t freeze during winter, making it ideal for use and storage at the cottage.

JOY(NC) It’s no secret that the beautiful Canadian summer weather helps kick start our physical activity. While we all know moving our bodies is good for our health, there is a scientific link between moving our bodies and happiness.
“Moving regularly and eating well has been shown to help with depression, anxiety and other mood disorders,” said Kathleen Trotter, a Canadian fitness and nutrition expert. “I always tell my clients that the worse their mood the more important the workout because gets them into a positive headspace.
Activity also positively affects the cardiovascular, lymphatic and digestive system as well as metabolism. It is associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes, and affects how our bodies metabolize glucose.
According to Trotter, proper nutrition also plays an integral role in managing symptoms of depression, anxiety and other mood disorders. Blood sugar imbalances, allergies, and deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, essential fats and amino acids have all been linked to low mood. To run properly, our body needs vitamins and minerals to make neurotransmitters and hormones and stabilize our blood sugar. Neurotransmitters and hormones help our body maintain balance and health which in turn effects our mood.
Vitamins like vitamin B, specifically B6, and folic acid help produce serotonin efficiently. Therefore a diet high in B vitamins and folic acid, found in
beans, nuts and vegetables, is usually advised to help stabilize mood.
Often times, people get caught up in the amount of time they should be working out. However, Trotter said this is a trap.
“Don’t question if what you are doing is enough,” she added. “Any amount of movement - whether it lasts for twenty minutes or two minutes - will positively affect your health.”
