Pues yo empec a hacer fotograa ija

ACHILLES AND THE TORTOISE

As, vemos a Simon en
video conferencia con muchas personas,
algunos son compaeros de la escuela y
otros desconocidos que se han unido al
grupo de discusin. Simon tambin inicia
Nights in Rodanthees una adaptacin
de la novela de
Nicholas Sparks, el
mismo que escribi
The Notebook y Message in a Bottle.

Jerry Shaw (Shia Laboeuf) y Rachel
Holloman (Michelle Monaghan)

sea semforos, trenes, computadoras,

Day of the DeadEl da de muertos or Day of
the Dead, its a mexican holiday
which can be traced back 2500to 3000 B.C among prehispanic
civilizations like Olmec, Zapo-
tec, Mixtec, Aztec, Maya Pu-
rpecha and Totonac.
In the pre-Hispanic era, it was
common to keep skulls as tro-
phies and display them duringthe rituals to symbolize death &
rebirth, but the one which the most resemblance totodays festivities its the Aztec festival dedicated to agoddes called Mictecacihuatl (nahuatl for the lady ofdeath, with the catolicism the goodess tranformed
into La Catrina). The festival fell in the ninth monthof the Aztec calendar, and was celebrated for an en-
tire month. We kept 2 days only: November 1st hon-ors deceased children, and November the 2nd foradults.
In Mxico it is believed that during the Day of theDead, it is allowed to the souls of the departed to visitthe living relatives and loved ones. People will builda shrine (altar) decorated with Cempaschil owers

In Mexico every region has its owncharacteristics or you can call it style,to celebrate the day of the dead, one
of the most beautiful places to visit dur-ing these festivities is Pacanda Island,Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacn, Mxico. The ambient during the night of da demuertos is very special because theisland is lighted with all the candlesthe people bring to light the tombs, themarigold owers over the tombs and
the bells ringing from the church whennight falls makes it very special..Pan de Muerto, is something that mygrandmother used to cook every year.Theres the plain bread and sweetbread. both are decorated some sug-ary topping representing bones. usu-ally it is served with hot chocolate.
And the media also celebrates el diade muertos with some poetry calledcalaveras (skulls) short poems intend-ed to be mocking epitaphs of friends, sometimes describing interesting hab-its, attitudes or funny anecdotes. It iscommon even nowadays newspapers
dedicate calaveras to public gureswith cartoons of skeletons in the styleof Jos Guadalupe Posada, a Mexi-can illustrator.
Some movies worth watching to un-derstand a little of the tradition, or justto be on the mood are:
Macario (1960)Directed by Roberto Gavaldn, star-ring Ignacio Lopez Tarso, it was re-leased at Cannes Film Festival, and
nominated for an Academy Award forBest Film in a Foreign Language. The story centers on Macario, a poorindigenous shepherd during the colo-nial Mexico who wishes to eat a roastturkey only for himself, his wife getshim the turkey and 3 men appear tohim to tempt him, one is the devil, the
second is God disguised as an oldman and the third one is the Deathitself. Macario shares his turkey withthe Death and they become friends.Death gives him miracle water withhealing powers, but before giving thewater, he must seek for Death: if it ap-pears on the feet of the sick person,
it can be cured, but if Death appearsby the head, they cant be healed. Thestory is an adaptation of the novel TheThird Guest, by B. Traven.
El Ahijado de la muerte (1946)Starring Jorge Negrete.Dionisio its a cowboy looking for agodfather for his newborn; drunk heends up at the Cemetery, where Deathawaits and offers herself as a God-mother.

Honestly, I feel that the programmersat both TIFF and VIFF absolutely nailedthe Pitch in their respective programmeguides. SO MUCH better than I couldhave put it, being so close to the lm.Director Terry Miles on "When Life WasGood" which screens at this year's Van-
couver International Film Festival (Sep-tember 25 - October 10).
Is this your rst lm in the VIFF? Do youhave any other festival experience? Ifyoure a festival veteran, let us know yourfavourite and least-favourite parts of thefestival experience. Do you plan to attendVIFF for the screenings?
This is my rst VIFF lm, and my only fes-tival experience as a participant is TIFF2008. I loved it, but the compressed timeand the pace were hard to let go.
Could you give me a little look into yourbackground (your own personal biogra-phy, if you will), and what led you to the
desire to want to make lm?
I came to lmmaking through music (Imade videos for my bands), and it justgrew out of that desire to do more than
just music. With cinema you have mu-sic, photography, theatre, and so muchmore.
Growing up, you were no doubt asked theeternal question When I grow up I wantto be a Finish this sentence, please!
Space CowboyYeah, Im still waitingfor this to pan out. While you were making the movie, were
you thinking about the future release ofthe lm, be it lm festivals, paying cus-tomers, critical response, and so forth?
No. I made WHEN LIFE WAS GOODbecause I saw a space in my collectionof lms (Im an avid cinephile), a type of
lm that I wanted to see that hadnt beenmade.
How did this project come to fruition? Ifyou could, please provide me with a run-down, start to nish, from your involve-ment.
I came up with an idea for the stuff with
Brooklyn coming home and leaving, andI knew I wanted to try guided improvisa-tion. It just grew out of that.
What was the biggest challenge in theproduction of the movie, be it principalphotography or post-production?
Getting the print and the blow up done in
time for TIFF. That was crazy. I was run-ning around working 16 hour days for amonth just trying to get everything readyin time.
Please tell me about the technical side ofthe lm; your relation to the lms cinema-tographer, what the lm was shot on andwhy it was decided to be photographed
this way.
Who would you say your biggest inspira-tions are in the lm world (directors, ac-tors, cinematographers, etc)? Did youhave any direct inspirations from lm-makers for this lm in particular?

Cassavetes, Von Trier, LaBute, Mood-ysson, Rohmer, and Woody Allen. I had
to use my limitations (no money) as mystrength. So I was the only crew, I didntuse any lights, and this gives the lm anintimacy of performance. If I had money,I would have made a different lm.
How far do you think you would want togo in this industry? Do you see yourselfworking on larger stories for a largerbudget under the studio system, or doyou feel that you would like to continuedown the independent lm path?
As long as I can Write, Direct, Shoot, and Edit EVERYTHING I do (and havenal cut), Id be happy doing anything.Id work in television without those stip-ulations. Id enjoy that type of work, andI might be able to fund a few low budgetprojects of my own that way.
If you werent in this profession, whatother career do you think you would beinterested in?
Novelist.
Please tell me some lmmakers or tal-
ent that you would love to work with, even if money was no object.
Ulrich Thomsen.
Do you think that you have made it inthis profession yet? If you dont believeso, what do you think would happen forthat moment to occur?
Id like to think that one day I could paymy rent by making lms, but well see.
How important do you think the critical/media response is to lm these days,
be it a large production, independentlm or festival title?
If it means more people see the lm, Ithink its very important.
If your lm could play in any movie the-atre in the world, which one would youchoose?
Alamo Drafthouse in Austin and the An-gelika in NYC.
Do you have an opinion on the issue ofA Film by (Insert Director Here) ? Isthis something you use? Many peoplecollaborate to make a lm yet simulta-neously, the director is the nal word onthe production.
When youre the only crew it seems t-ting. Although, it is true that you cantmake a lm without actors.
What would you say to someone onthe street to see your lm instead of thelatest blockbuster playing at the localmegaplex?
Id probably have to trick them.
No doubt there are a lot of aspiringlmmakers at lm festivals who are outthere curious about making a lm oftheir own. Do you have any advice thatyou could provide for those looking toget a start?
Just make it. Dont go for lunch and talkabout it. Dont get involved in Develop-
ment. Thats a ridiculous concept.

Being second banana to anyone can
be a trying experience. Take the case ofone Jerry Shaw. Born into a hard-workingfamily this young man cant quite live up tohis dads expectations, unlike his man inuniform brother. Through some quirk Jerrygets caught up in danger when one day hislife is turned upside down.Unbeknownst to Jerry he apparently has
been targeted by some mysterious orga-nization that sees him running errands fora possible terrorist cell. Or so the authori-ties think. While Jerry is on the run fromthe law a young woman named RachelHolloman also nds herself in a similarrather precarious situation.
Moment by moment the pair get over-taken by events as their lives become sortof programmed by a strange sounding
guide who manages to maneuver the pairthrough a series of death-defying events.Scores of people go by the wayside asthese two manage to elude what seemslike the entire security forces of the UnitedStates as the government agents do theirbest to capture the two runaway fugitivesfrom the law.
Way back when famed writer AldousHuxley gave us his classic novel, the futur-istic 1984. Well, that year has come andgone and now we are knee deep in unbe-lievable technology. Gadgets and govern-ment control make up a key part of Eagle
Eye along with a nice mix of military might
and spy hardware good enough to rivalany of the more recent 007 encounters. While elements of this lm may have beenseen before in such action classics as En-emy of the State and Die Hard 4 thanks toa great cast you cant help but sense thefear and edge of your seat excitement thatnever lets up, no matter how preposterousthings get.
Hunk sensation Shia LaBeouf (Indi-ana Jones and the Kingdom of the CrystalSkull) is terric as this mild mannered guythrust into a life or death struggle continu-ously. Up to snuff too is Michelle Mon-aghan (Gone Baby Gone) whose portrayalas a loving mom in the ght of her life isalso terric. Emotions run high as do theendless chase scenes here that will appeal
to action fans across the globe.
Super secondary characters por-trayed by consummate actors like BillyBob Thornton, Michael Chiklis and RosarioDawson further enhance the mood in thistale of danger and intrigue. Despite a fewtoo many convenient messages and somescenes that are just too damn predictable
and hard to believe Eagle Eye is a top ightaction adventure guaranteed to get eventhe coldest hearts pumping wildly.

RELIGULOUS

Danger looms whenever the subject ofreligions rears its head. Leave it to acid-tongued comedian Bill Maher to unleashloads of laughs on this age-old phenomenain Religulous, a hilarious one of a kind com-mentary on beliefs and those into preachingvalues seeking converts at the Fifth AvenueCinemas, Esplanade 6, Empire Studio 12,
Colossus and Famous Players Silver Citycites around B.C. Brought forth by LionsGate lms this searing documentary is in-sightful, funny and highly informative.
Fans of Mahers classic Politically Incor-rect television series will be glad hes -nally made it to the big screen. Globaltravel suits this guy just ne as he scoursthe world to uncover the truth as it relatesto religion and all things philosophical. Nostone is left unturned as this sophisticateuses great one-liners and ad libs to skewera host of leaders from the most recognizedreligions in the world along with their legionof hear no evil see no evil followers.
Jaunts to the Holy Land, biblical themeparks and truck stop chapels make for hi-larious encounters with the ock. WhenMaher gets serious he prefaces his re-marks by creating doubts in the minds ofaudiences. Intolerance and the wishes of
congregations and their leaders to hoisttheir views onto others is ably debated withsome classic lm clips thrown in along sidegreat subtitles to mock such higher purposepronouncements so many converts adhereto, often blindly.
Serious subject matters emerge here, par-
ticularly the role of Islam as a somewhatintolerant religion. Shot in a guerilla likestyle its great fun to watch Maher relate tohis guests which take him to such hot spotsas Israel, Amsterdam and London on thisHoly Grail search for the truth
.
Flashes of ambouyance mesh with deepemotional commitments to adherents of Al-lah, God and any other Almighty gure inthis sensational 101 minute expose thatuses the words of religious people to castdoubts over their claims. Viewers will beleft nodding their heads in agreement asMaher comes down hard, though fairly withhis witty sarcastic style, debating just howgood religion really is and whether its in factat the root of all evil in todays world.

Brace yourself for pure excitement withTell No One, a terric thriller from France.Sub-titles take nothing away from this
smart tale of intrigue and danger present-ed by director/co-writer Guillaume Canet.Canadian audiences nally get a chanceto see this French gem thats as effectiveas anything Hollywood could ever mus-ter in the suspense department. Fans ofsuspense need to get over to the ParkTheatre to see this thriller unfold duringits stay here.
Early on we learn about a love affairbetween a doctor to be and his obviousparamour. On the surface this couplewould seem to have everything going forthem: youth, good looks and up and com-ing careers amongst other things. Onesummer time trip to your typical lakesidecottage in the French countryside turnswhat should have been an idyllic relation-ship and lifetime together into an eightyear ordeal.
Bad things happen to good people.Only here nothing is what it appears. Af-ter a lakesid murder our good doctor AlexBeck cant get over the loss of his lovedone Margot. Eight years later the receiptof a message turns his life into chaos as
he searches for the truth concerning theevents at the lake. Out to keep him in thedark (and worse) are a series of strangeevents and occurrences which sees thisprofessional take matters into his own
hands to get at the truth.
You cant trust anyone and this search
sees Alex put literally under the gun as heapparently is target number one in a se-ries of murders that set off a further chainof events the likes of which one cant re-ally comprehend.Besides a superb story that never lets
up with tremendous pacing and tensionanother highlight of this fully engagingthriller are the performances. French ac-
tor Francois Cluzet (French Kiss) is noth-ing short of superb in his portrayal of themild-mannered doctor pushed to the limitsto retrace his life and stay alive. Frenchpolice tactics and the power of privilegealso come home to roost in this 125 min-ute drama that will make people thinktwice about their relationships and theirfriends. Great chases through the streetsof Paris further enliven this story whosehigh tech ambience blends well with old-fashioned gum-shoeing to keep you onedge throughout.
Not to be missed, Tell No One turnsout to be one of the smartest and best ofall freshest thrillers in years. After watch-ing this treat, I guarantee viewers will telleveryone about the experience theyve
had with hearts clearly pounding in ex-pectation (and admiration).

Howdy partners. Saddle up your horsesand head down to the Esplanade 6, Sco-tiabank Theatre, Colossus and FamousPlayers Silver City cites to discover Appa-loosa, the latest ode to the old west fromAlliance Films.
Back way back when westerns werethe toast of Hollywood, especially duringthe 40s and 50s. Good guy Ed Harris(Absolute Power) tries to revive this fa-bled genre in triple role duty: director, ac-tor and co-writer. Lucky for us he pulls offa pretty good tale, not just a tall tale.
Lawlessness has long been a plague
of the old west. Once news leaks out thatbad things are happening in the smalltown of Appaloosa the town elders seekhelp. Enter law enforcers Virigil Cole andfaithful sidekick Everett Hitch. Neitherof these men say much but they pack apretty lethal rie and six shooter.
Chief villain of the valley is the ne
coiffed Randall Bragg who seems to haveeveryone in his pocket. Violence eruptsalmost immediately with a pretty evenlybalanced showdown there for the taking.Complicating factors, however, plagueboth sides, not the least of which is attrac-
tive Allison French who seems to be oneveryones mind.
You can almost taste the dust in the airas things in this wild wild west start to heatup. Ed Harris is particularly effective asthe soft-spoken, plain talking Virgil Colewith Jeremy Irons (Die Hard With A Ven-geance) terric as the cultured thug out tomake the town his own. Also quite goodis the work of Viggo Mortensen (A Historyof Violence) whose mere presence onscreen speaks volumes as a co-defenderof justice in this unruly frontier.
Despite being a tad slow Harris suc-
ceeds in creating a gritty atmosphereof that small town frontier avour andsprinkles it liberally with nice set piecesand effective characters. Even ReneeZellweger (Jerry Maguire) comes of agehere as your typical school marm caughtbetween a series of hot-blooded men whomay just have met their match.
Certain rather subtle surprises and in-teresting plot elements helps make Appa-loosa thoroughly watchable with revengeand grudges playing active parts in thebuilding tension.
