ACCOMPLISHMENTS Created a new search and rescue instrument that uses
passive retroreflecting material as a target marker and an ultrasensitive active airborne scanner with a modulated laser illuminator.
Eye-safe system with a day/night search capability of 140 square-miles/hour, capable of detecting a one square-foot marker from an altitude of 4,000 feet, life preservers from 2,000 feet, and real-time data processing for automatic target detection.
GPS integrated with the L-SAR system establishes the ground position of each locator.
COMMERCIALIZATION The retroreflector material is commercially available and
represents a whole new market for the suppliers of the material and to the manufacturers of marine and aircraft emergency gear.
Potential worldwide market for this technology.
GOVERNMENT/SCIENCE APPLICATIONS Pending NASA proposal to conduct a 1 year
demonstration with the Civil Air Patrol in Alaska.
