Today’s Gospel from the Book of Luke — in fact all of our readings for today, this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time — have to do with salvation. It is difficult to be faithful and Catholic without thinking about heaven on occasion, and the Lord and St. Paul often in his letters, remind us over and over that we are to be striving for that — that our thoughts should be as much on the next life as on this one.
The final words of the final Gospel for the month of August are: “For behold some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” Jesus is saying to us, “You may be at the front of the line, but it does not matter.” Theologi-ans say that one concept that is embedded in this message is a perspective of the Jews and the Gentiles. The Jews as the chosen people would seem to be the first, but the Lord is say-ing that there will be Gentiles who enter Heav-en before them.
But there is a message to all of us as well. Jesus reminds us that what we think is important on earth may not be im-portant in heaven at all. To be a real disci-ple of Jesus, we must live for Him every day and in every aspect of life. This kind of life takes strength and discipline. It re-quires constant conversion of mind and heart until we will put the needs of others before our own. Only then we can become true Jesus’ disciples and followers. Only then the last will be first.
