Psychologically, they must be able to separate themselves from their practice in order to create a culture in which they learn to be ‘hard on the work’ while being ‘respectful with each other.’ This is not an easy process given that our very identity is often tied up with how we practice our craft. It is made even more problematic in a culture of privacy and isolation endemic to public education, which can make sharing our practice fraught with oversensitivity and defensiveness.”
