Living For Christ
Bluffton United Methodist Church
A “Stephen Ministry” Church
Volume 13, Issue 4 APRIL 2017
Coming through the season of
Lent, we eagerly anticipate Easter.
After all, Lent is a time of sacrifice.
Easter is a time of celebration! Lent is a time of self-denial.
Easter is a time of celebration! Lent is a time of penitence.
Easter is a time of celebration! Get the point?!
I wonder then, why personally Christmas is the much
more anticipated season. I mean, even more than Advent,
as Christians, Easter is OUR time. Yet, I seem to struggle
with celebrating.
Perhaps, it's because I've not done my Lenten
homework. If I fully realize how in need I truly am, maybe
Easter means that much more.
So, join with me in the Easter season, as we celebrate
the release of the captives. In Christ, we are free. In Christ,
we are new creations. Praise be to God!!

STEPHEN MINISTRY
Our Source of Comfort The world’s definition of comfort is “the
alleviation of suffering or despair”. However,
the Lord has a different view. The hardship He allows in
our lives is a teaching tool. We mature spiritually when we
exercise our faith, so God doesn’t remove our troubles,
but instead gives us the strength and encouragement we
need to work through them.
Regardless of the kind of discomfort we’re facing, we
always have the Holy Spirit available to us. God sent His
Spirit to dwell within our hearts, so no one understands
our needs or can help us the way He can. Asking the Holy
Spirit to come close to us in our time of need reinforces
our relationship with God and gives us strength to carry
on.
As children of God we know that He will never leave us
or forsake us (paraphrase Hebrews 13:5). He is always
available to help us through whatever we’re facing. All we
have to do is ask.
If you are facing a situation that is causing you some
discomfort, perhaps you could benefit from a confidential
and caring relationship with a Stephen Minister. If so,
please contact our Stephen Leader, Sara Jenkins, at
843.705.2172.
The Stephen Ministry hospital visitation
schedule for April is noted below. If you
know of someone in the hospital during this

THE MISSION TEAM will
meet on April 19, 2017 at 7:00
p.m. in the conference room.
Janice Trainor is the
chairperson of the Mission Team.
The March Miracle Jars supporting Memory
Matters amounted to $559.00! Thank you so
much for your very generous giving!
Your Miracle Jar donations for April are going
toward a new ministry in our church. Carrefour Friends
provides specially trained volunteers to develop warm and
compassionate social connections with lonely and socially
isolated elderly persons living in licensed care facilities. It is a
ministry of BUMC and is not affiliated with any national
group. Our Jackie Tuohig wrote the program and
incorporated state and federal guidelines for volunteers.
Volunteers are trained according to those guidelines. BUMC
is presently contracted with two facilities in Bluffton and is
getting ready to take on a third. There are currently 20
volunteers but there are 17 residents still in need of
volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a friend for
someone who really needs one, please contact
This is a ministry where you can not only donate your
money but more importantly, your time!
The Mission team has arranged to
collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids
for the Lion's Club. We can collect lenses, frames (broken
frames are okay), reading glasses, and sunglasses, broken or
working hearing aids. The Lion's Club uses pieces to make
new ones which are given to children, elderly and those in
need. This will be an ongoing project, and there is a box in
the Narthex to deposit these.
We are ready for your requests and your help! Just contact any or all of us (listed below) and let us know your concern and we’ll let the team know
right away. If you’re interested in joining the team, contact one of us and we’ll get you included.

Since their last appearance at BUMC, Kearston, age 12
and Kendall, age 10 have been very busy. Last summer
the girls experienced their very first residential summer

Staunton, VA. The camp helps talented musicians
between the ages of 9 and 13 with chamber music and
solo repertoire.
In September 2016 the sisters performed the "National
Anthem" in Washington, DC for the Washington Mystics
WNBA game and also in December 2016 in Charlotte, NC
for the Charlotte Hornets vs. the Miami Heat NBA game.
Their busy schedule continued in January 2017 when
the sisters performed the "National Anthem" in Houston,
TX for the Houston Rockets vs. The Golden State Warriors
game.
In Feb 2017 they performed in Greensboro, NC for the
International Civil Rights Museum 20th Year Anniversary
Gala.
This summer the girls will attend Heifetz PEG Summer
Music Camp and Jr. Greenwood Summer Chamber Music
Camp in Cummington, MA. To add to their busy schedule,
they have been selected to perform the "National
Anthem" for an upcoming Houston Astros game.

No one comes to the Father except
through me.

day.Together we will savor the pleasures and endure
the difficulties it brings. Be on the lookout for everything I

March was Rural Mission Emphasis Month. BUMW had
a special Unit meeting honoring Linda Gadson, Executive
Director of Rural Missions, our guest speaker on March
4th. Our women presented Linda with 10 fleece blankets
for the children, about 20 blankets for the adults and 20
pairs of warm socks for the adults. Our meeting was
followed by a wonderful “pot luck” luncheon. There were
30 members in attendance.

The Bluffton Village Festival is right around the corner
and again we will have a “White Elephant” sale.
We need you help to make this a successful fundraiser.
As you are doing you spring cleaning, please consider
donating your items to us. We are asking for spring and
summer clothes, jewelry, hats, purses, household items,
books, gardening items, etc. Just please remember that
at this sale, the items need to be small. Because this is a
Village Festival, people will not be able to park their cars
in front of us to load larger items. However, we can take
them in November for our Fall Yard Sale. You can bring
them to the church now and put them in the room
across from the kitchen. There is a sign on the door.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH AGAIN

CARREFOUR FRIENDS
Plans are underway to expand the
Carrefour Friends program to the other
Methodist churches in Bluffton. Our church members
have been overwhelmingly supportive in volunteering
their time to visit lonely elderly residents at care facilities
in our community, but Carrefour has received more
referrals than we can accommodate with our present
number of volunteers. We started seeing residents in care
facilities the last week of December and now, three
months later, we have twenty volunteers and are visiting
residents at Bloom at Bluffton and Benton House.
Another care facility is waiting for us to come onboard
once we get additional volunteers.
One of the first residents that I interviewed last
December was a lovely gentleman who has three children
who all live in another state. He was happily married for
forty-six years before his wife passed. And he is lonely.
Really lonely. You can often find him sitting in the lobby of
the care facility where he now lives. He sits there in hopes
that those coming in will engage him in a conversation
where he can share his interests and reminisce with them.
Recently, I was able to tell him that I had found a
volunteer with similar interests who wants to visit him
weekly. Tears welled up in his eyes and ran down his
cheeks. I was reminded at that moment that Jesus said to,
"Love thy neighbor as thyself." We all hope that we will
never be alone as this man is now. He never dreamed that
he would be in this situation at this late stage in his life.
There are so many intangible rewards derived from
sharing your time with a lonely elderly resident. Those
who do so say that they learn the true value and meaning
of life and learn to live their lives to the fullest – as though
each day would be their last. They relate that their lives
become dearer. A Carrefour Friends volunteer knows the
true reward is having the opportunity to give to someone
that which we may one day desperately need ourselves.
Carrefour Friends……care for friends.
March completed our series on
Chaos and we started Alter Egos which
will go through April.
The Chaos series showed us that God never intended for
our lives to be defined by stress. We learned He wants to
replace our stress with something better – His peace. We
turned to our Bibles and looked at what Jesus did when He
was stressed. Over and over He spent time alone with God.
So we’ve confirmed what we need to do: we need to spend
time with God too.
Then we thought about the chaos of always looking for
approval…do we look right? Do we act right? Do we say the
right things?...it’s like constant pressure wondering if we’re
approved – but it boils down to math:
What God Thinks > What “They” Think
Finally, we were Done and it turns out when we thought
we were disappointing God because we weren’t perfect –
He’s more interested in our presence than our
performance.
In April, we’re exploring our alter ego. Every superhero
has one and they typically use them to hide…
Remember…this is YOUR Youth Group…YOU should be a
part of it! All 6th through 12th graders are invited almost (but
