STAFF ON REPEATthe tracks we can’t stop listening to this month
JESS: TERROR PIGEON - GIRL!
DAVE: DEERS - CASTIGADAS EN EL GRANERO
LOKI: MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND - THIS IS MY HAND
DANNY: APHEX TWIN - MINIPOPS 67
GEMMA: GIRLPOOL - JANE
I'm sat here sipping on some kind of berry based cocktail, like summer never ended, like storms aren't taking over our skies, like we're not about to be buried underneath the sheer weight of the amount of gigs heading our way this October.
It's insane, there's just not enough space to fit them all in, we've done our best, but keep checking back on our site too, there's some spectacular things planned, so we wouldn't want you to miss out. This month sees the return of Caribou and we couldn't be more excited to have him back. Our Love is definitely going to worm
its way into your hearts and feet, if you’ve not got a ticket to the Brixton Academy show yet...what are you waiting for?
Also we're excited to tell you, we've got an app! Yep, all shiny and new, at the moment it's just so you can read the magazine way more easily on your phones and tablets, we're pretty excited about so if you get a chance, download it and take a look, maybe even read one of the old issues you missed. You never know what gems might be in there.

Tyrannosaurus Dead play The Lexington November 22nd
London trio Slowcoaches have just released a split cassette with Feature called Tourists, and Raw Dealings is a fuzzy hypnotic highlight from the EP. Featuring gnarly vocals by Heather Nicole, the pulsating beats of Mazes’ drummer Neil Robertson and thumping guitars from Matt Dixon, we’re constantly impressed by Slowcoaches’ musical output and it’s only a matter time before they're your favourite new band. Shaun Hill
SLOWCOACHESRAW DEALINGS
Tyrannosaurus Dead have been filling our ears with their frenetic brand of wiry guitars for well over a year now and the good news is we won't have to wait much longer for an album as the five-piece recently announced their debut Flying Ant Day, will be released on 3rd November via Oddbox Records. Local Bullies is an infectious number from it which showcases the band’s two vocalists Billy Lowe and Eleanor Rudge in full splendour. Anant Naik

Folklore suggests that three is a magic number. Supergroup White Sands prove it’s true musically, at least, with The Wait. Their three members Conan Roberts (Mazes), Sophy Hollington (Novella) and John Arthur Webb (Male Bonding) will be releasing it as a three-track 7" flexidisc via Art Is Hard Records this month which will be limited to, ahem, 300 copies. We had the pleasure of watching Flowers from the pews of St. Pancras Old Church last month and Forget The Fall was one of many which raised our neck hairs. It also gives context to the title of the band’s warm debut Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do within its lyrics. Anant Naik

Pragmatism probably isn’t the number one trait you’d hope to find in a rock outfit, but then JOHN aren’t particularly interested in conforming to clichés.“Having both played since our teenage years, it’s been easy to fall out of love with the repeatable code of the ‘rock’ band,” explains John number one. “The serious photographs in front of dilapidated barns and disused airfields...” “We wouldn’t want it to become a macho pastiche,” he continues, “Acting like we’re incredibly confident, forced into leather trousers. Besides it’s not practical; old football shorts are better in high temperatures and they dry quicker.”Well, quite. And in an industry where surliness and egotism are deemed an acceptable substitute for personality – and “balls-out” and “testosterone- fuelled” are widely regarded as reasonable prefixes for “rock” – it’s refreshing to see a duo tear through the bullshit with little but savage sonics and
bone-dry humour. Both in their mid-twenties, they met while sharing the same building in London, and bonded over common skills, interests and Christian names. Five months on from debut track Johnny’s Got A Sleeve, they’ve just shared an eponymous EP which pairs powerhouse percussion and blistering riffs with wonderfully absurd lyrics, that are part-screamed/ part-drawled.Flab-free and bristling with barely-contained energy, their songs sound like a riotous cross between McClusky and Future Of The Left, but fronted by a seriously peeved Eddie Argos. And how would JOHN describe their sound? “Four legs, four arms, two heads, wood, metal and plastic.”

experience London as much as I would have liked. We've never even done the basic touristy things either when we've been. We stood outside Buckingham Palace for a while once, looks like a cracking big house. Hopefully, at some point, we will have enough time to go visit that Ferris wheel and the big clock.
I guess it's also worth mentioning that it is a historic time in the relationship between a Scotsman and London. With the Independence referendum fast approaching perhaps the next time we are in London we will be foreigners in a strange land and we can visit that big building that used to be our parliament. Whatever happens on September 18th I'm sure we will all still be pals and we will keep on coming back – if we can get through the border patrols. Adam ThompsonWe Were Promised Jetpacks release Unravelling October 6th via FatCat Records. They play The Lexington October 8th.
I reckon we've been to London about ten times or so to play shows with our band. We've played all different types of shows there. All over the city. Mostly our own wee headline shows but we've supported our pals Frightened Rabbit a couple of times. We supported them at Brixton Academy and that gig blew my mind. The place is huge. When walking around before doors opened it felt like an old fashioned town square that had long been deserted. We were cheesing and very pleased for the Rabbits that night. It was some achievement.
I've always found it bizarre that if you do a show in one area of London, people from another area won't come because it's too far away and too hard to get home after. So it's like a bunch of different cities in one big city. It's like its own little country. Sadly, I've never been down just for a visit so I don't feel like I've ever been able to understand, enjoy or

Les Sins release Michael November 3rdvia Company Records.
“It’s not a bad thing to be accessible. It just gets a bad rep. ” Chaz Bundick, who you’ll probably know best as Toro Y Moi and who’s now made a dance album under the name Les Sins, is talking about artists who’ve inspired him. Talk has turned to Paul Rand, the American graphic designer whose contributions changed the design industry forever.“I love the way people like him and Saul Bass approach it. I love artists in general who aren’t afraid to try different types of medium and try to alienate people - try to reach so many areas of design - but alsotry to be accessible at the same time. That’s important.”Viewed in this context Les Sins makes perfect sense – an album that may surprise people but remains catchy, earwormy and definitely accessible. If the slinky RnB pop of the latest Toro Y Moi album Anything in Return highlighted a prolific artist subtly expanding his range, Michael is an album that pushes his sonic palette in a completely new direction. Yet despite its outré dance moments it always comes back to this central idea of being pop, something that seems important to Chaz. And he has a valuable resource to guide him too.“That’s where my friends and family opinions come in. I’m like ‘What do you think of this?’ and they’re like ‘Errrrr that sounds weird’ and I’m like ‘Oh.’”We’re guessing they liked what they heard. Because taking in classic dance and pop music, French house, techno, EDM and '90s hip hop beatmaking, this first full Les Sins LP (following three 12"s) is a helter skelter, wide smile-inducing ride of sonic adventuring.“Nowadays people are so into electronic music but they’re maybe only into stuff like Disclosure or James Blake and I really wanted to make music not so close to that and challenge the listener but still showing similar influences.”
“The more electronic music has been influencing pop music I find myself going deeper and deeper into the genres and labels I’m interested in. Because I want to challenge the audience I want to dig a lot.”But there are some familiar names referenced too. “It’s an obvious one that Daft Punk influenced it when it came to the French dance stuff but Mr Oizo – especially for the darker tones on the album – was also a big influence. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Triangle, stuff like that.” And with all this digging how have Toro fans taken to the disorienting dance beats at shows? “Everyone knows me from Toro Y Moi and I can’t avoid that. So the crowds have been a mixture of Toro fans and electronic fans.”“I’ve played a couple of shows and I’ve got a tour coming up. It’s gone well. It’s pretty much a DJ set but I’m trying to get it to the point where I’m playing all original stuff. I’d like it to be a dance thing but I wanna make it so that you can only hear these tracks live.”It’s clear that he’s an artist constantly plotting his next move. He’s already talking about creating more Les Sins material for the live show and is taking on more production work. “I just produced an artist called Keath Mead who’s a 70s rock kind of thing like Big Star. It’s really cool. It’s fun to go from traditional instrumentation to producing beats.”And when asked who else is on his wish-list his ambitions shine through.“I don’t know, as far as a wish-list it’s really hard. I’m really open to doing anything interesting. Anyone that’s on the radio – they’ve got a huge audience to bring to the table.”For someone who was once tagged as a bedroom producer this is a clear sign of someone pushing back the curtains and reaching for the (pop) stars.

In rhetoric, chiasmus is the device by which “two or more clauses are related to eachother, through a reversal of structures, in order to make a larger point”. The term serves both as the inspiration for Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen’s collective pseudonym, and a rationale behind their collaboration: to deconstruct and combine their distinct musical styles with the aim of creating something weightier. What’s immediately striking about Kiasmos is just how far their sound’s evolved since 2009’s split EP with Rival Consoles. Gone are the brutal beats and, instead of minimal techno, we’re given soulful, symphonic electronica that feels like the perfect cross-pollination of Arnalds’ ambient, piano-led compositions and the synth-heavy electro Ramussen makes with Bloodgroup. And it’s a mutually beneficial alliance: synthetic sounds, samples and tape loops accentuate the beauty in acoustic instrumentation, while a string quartet and grand piano lend poignancy to electronic elements.Swayed and Bent are the most energetic offerings here, the former layering a plaintive piano motif with clipped synths, shuffling beats and a playful topline, the latter redolent of Moderat with its syncopated rhythms and deep, throbbing synths. Another obvious comparison is Jon Hopkins’ Immunity, in the sense that Kiasmos is also all about the slow-burn and that the tracks seem to trace a dramatic arc. Unlike Hopkins, Arnalds and Rasmussen have purposely left us to make our own reading. It’s this understanding – that to truly engage the listener you must leave them space to bring their own meaning – that makes their debut so very special. Intricate arrangements seem minimal thanks to a meticulous use of subtle dynamics, be that the distant sound of the ocean rippling on Lit, the elegiac strings cocooning soft piano on Held, or the frazzled fade-out on Burnt. The result is a record far greater than the sum of its parts. Gemma Samways

RECORD OF THE MONTHALBUMS
LiS 19
Generously furnishing contemporaries Icona Pop and Iggy Azalea with inescapable choruses on I Love It and Fancy respectively, you might worry Charli XCX would run short on earworms for this second solo outing. You needn't. Sucker is a precision-targeted glitterbomb of melodic chutzpah, a rainbow
slurpee of pop E numbers that squarely hits each sugar-triggered serotonin gland with merciless precision. It's a rallying call to anyone who's been missing the tottering cool of yesteryear's mascara-smeared icons (stand up much-missed flagbearers Bananarama, Altered Images and Shampoo, for starters). What makes Sucker such an unexpected pleasure is that the well of inspiration for snotty, seat of the pants party anthems refuses to run dry from start to finish. Hands down, it's simply the pop record of the year. Tom Edwards
Any fellow long ago called “the greatest drummer ever” by Brian Eno and credited with inventing Afrobeat by Fela Kuti could be forgiven for resting on his laurels. Yet 74-year-old Tony Allen sounds like a man with something to prove, even when he absolutely isn’t. Film Of Life is a jaunty but
profound update of the sound he initially pioneered, with brash brass, slinking bass lines and dazzling polyrhythms present in abundance. Damon Albarn, who enlisted Allen as drummer for The Good, The Bad & The Queen, returns the favour with a sultry guest vocal on Go Back, but Allen behind his kit remains the real star - Afro KungFu Beat in particular is a feat of drumming one can’t imagine emanating from anyone else. Thomas Hannan
A frantic fuzz pot of a debut from LA duo The Bots. An African- American-Asian heritage, a record collection of reggae, blues, and garage rock, an A-Z of talent (well, Damon Albarn to Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner) and tender age (Mikajah is twenty and Anaiah Lei seventeen) have all served the siblings well.
Contagious and unrestrained, it blends old-school jams with youthful vibrancy, garage rock with a blues-soaked soul, pop beats with clattering drums, all on a crushing writhe of tunes. For the most part clattering, bouncy and fun, there are still moments of twitchy introversion delivered with teenage cool. It’s the sound of two kids growing through music, and packs a powerful punch. Francesca Baker

In the run up to the release of their fourth full-length release, The Twilight Sad have spoken of their need to look back before moving forwards. With that in mind this record feels like something of an amalgamation of all that has come before. The synths remain but here they trickle as an
undercurrent while the dramatic slabs of guitars return, prodigal and fully welcomed. What the band have achieved here though, possibly more so here than ever before, is a balance. It's urgent and reckless but, at the same time, considered and confident. New single Last January is emphatically heady, the title track is powerfully gripping, and the record’s closing track may well be their most emotive moment to-date. Remarkably distinct, they remain a very special band indeed. Tom Johnson
Wampire come from Portland, Oregon, play Ariel Pink-like garage rock and are considerably less shit than their name implies. That
was the premise behind their debut album, last year’s Curiosity, and not much has changed since then. With Bazaar, that element of psychedelia-tinged surprise is gone, meaning its songs can’t just get by on goofball charm. This turn of fate is something Too Stoned, Wizard Staff and Millennials blithely ignore, like the horror movie character whose response to any onscreen atrocity is simply: “duuuuuuude”. In fairness to Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps, they’ve never claimed to be anything more than two bros larking around with impressive finesse. When you put it like that, their second record will do just fine.Rob Leedham
Buried deep in the folds of primordial digitised bass blasts and a never-ending supply of chomping drumkit romps
lays one hell of a party. If you need an invite, look no further than the truly encyclopaedic trove of beats that drummer Thomas Fuglesang spits on Treaty and Treasure. It all stems from his superb, ever-shifting rhythms allowing Jussi Brightmore’s electro tomfoolery to bite into your skull. This London duo clearly revels in its power. And who’s to argue? They can as easily serve up Surveillance’s 54 seconds of palette-cleansing ambient interference as they can tear into the mind-numbing drone of the thirteen-minute Wych Elm with its Liars-esque chants and meditations. This is an hour of the most pleasurable pain. Geoff Cowart

Nobody has referred to Flying Lotus as “our generation’s Hendrix” for a while, yet his latest record should see him comfortably boast the title of “pioneer” from even the snootiest of naysayers. Lush expanses of spacious beats, the specifics of which Steven Ellison has perfected over each
release, are sandwiched between frantic splurges of jazz, drug-infused voyages (Descent Into Madness is chokingly claustrophobic) and, as ever, meticulous hip-hop flourishes, notably buoyed by a slew of genuinely thrilling guest verses. Hell, on Dead Man’s Tetris, he even makes Snoop Dogg sound rejuvenated. Despite the scrum of household names, there is little doubt that you are a guest at the table of Flying Lotus’ demented tea party – never has tumbling down the rabbit hole been so blissfully unnerving. Lee Wakefield
Following on from 2012's genre-defining Devotion, Jessie Ware returns to the theme of unrequited love, “cleansing” herself from past “demons” before married life begins. And it’s lovelorn she does so well; from the record’s title track, to the gospel choir-ridden Say You Love Me - which feels like
the perfect ingredient to help her break fully Stateside - Tough Love is riddled with velvety emotion. Stand-outs include Want Your Feeling, with its subtly-psychedelic riff and funk-driven chorus, and the sugary sweet Keep On Lying, which allows Ware’s voice to pour over breathy synth lines, whilst kisses punctuate the 80s-inspired chorus of Champagne Kisses. Get ready to fall in love with Jessie all over again. George O’Brien
You’re unlikely to find a title for an album more indicative of someone’s artistic mindset than Luke Wyatt’s new effort as Torn Hawk. Don’t be hindered by its seeming hilarity, though - what Wyatt has committed to record is by far his most accessible and emotion-laden effort to date and one that
scrapes through the barriers of his ambient infamy. Tracks like I’m Flexible and Lessons From The Edge glide with a new romance, echoing the melodic sensibilities of DNTEL or Baths at their instrumental best but remain grounded with Wyatt’s esoteric bearing. It may seem a challenging or off-putting record at first but delving deeper into its meaning you find a sincerity that no attempt at an ironic title could throw off.William Grant

Four years ago, things were going swimmingly for Dan Snaith. His ridiculously successful album of brain-scrambling electronic psychedelia, Swim, was turning heads - much to his surprise, he admits candidly - but it then came time for Snaith to sink back into his studio chair and create the follow-up.
“Swim felt wonderful, it was different,” says the veteran Canadian musician with the handsome neck scarf.“To feel people’s excitement and hear how the album ended up in their lives was great. I’ve never had an albumjust keeping growing and growingeven a year or two after being released. It was a gift.”
It was after ‘precisely’ 230 Caribou shows (he recalls with frightening accuracy), the release of his first Daphni LP, a whole bunch of DJing and a tour with Radiohead that Snaith
it’s now the turn of Our Love to emerge as every bit as eclectic, danceable, odd, populist and clever as its predecessor. A casual spin of its ten tracks and 41 minutes is enough to discern that it’s the work of a musician who’s grown into his sound, only to bafflingly absorb a whole new palette of sonic possibilities along the way. He summons fellow Canuck collaborators Jessy Lanza and Owen Pallett to help out – with musical best pal Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) never far away to bounce ideas off – and the dizzying
‘stopped, looked around and swore’ he couldn’t tread water any longer – he needed some new Caribou music.“But once I made the decision to record, my only intention was to make music that was warm and generous, to reach out, share and connect with people,” he says. “I wanted to put as much of myself personally into the music and be as unguarded as possible.”
The result is Our Love. But she arrived before the record. That is, his daughter Zola – born three years ago to the 36-year-old dad and his wife. And somewhere in his new album’s four-year gestation, between the endless touring and parenting duties,
array of pop’s most leftfield oddballs assist Snaith in making Our Love every bit the equal of Swim.
“Several of my closest friends have been through divorces in the past few years, while the older generation is getting sick - and passing away,” he says. “At the same time, I had a daughter and had a whole bunch of other wonderful experiences that really drew me out of being a little hermit in the studio and into a wider world ofmy friends, family and people I love. They made me want to write thenew songs.”
But I can’t help feel that Snaith’s PhD in Pure Maths from Imperial College

London has infected his laptop. Just check out the way the nightclub-loving teetotaller skilfully balances every one of his sound equations, pairing up a woozy dubstep beat on the title track with a house break strong enough to snap your neck. Or his superb Second Chance pairing of an eerie synthesizer riff matched up with one of Lanza’s trademark lilting r’n’b verses.“Having done the Daphni record – which is fairly functional music, designed for people to dance to – I still wanted it to have some elements of surprise and make the album a bit unusual,” Snaith says with a wry smile. “I set myself no limits and tried to encompass everything I like about music. It may sound trite, but going out to play at Fabric at 4am and the next day being in the park with my daughter – these things in my life began to exist in parallel. Likewise in the music, I wanted to let the songs sit between different worlds and styles.”
Where the two albums diverge noticeably is the gushy warmth radiating from Our Love. And Lanza deserves credit for setting the comforting tone on the title track against a backdrop of Snaith’s
warbling array of synths. She delivers the angular and precise verse with an enchantingly strong whisper that sounds soulful as fuck before Snaith’s claustrophobic electronica gradually swamps her.
“The experience of supporting Radiohead and playing the summer festivals this year has inspired meto push for something that is goingto be fun to play in front of a big crowd,” states Snaith. And when it comes time to hit the road again, he will turn to his loyal band of lifelong friend Ryan Smith (guitar) from the Manitoba days, Brad Weber (drums) and John Schmersal (bass) to hashout the songs.
“It’s great being able to watch a crowd react. So when it came to dropping a massive bassline or building the euphoria of Can’t Do Without You,it’s really nice to make songs take a left turn.” Take enough left turns and you end up going in a circle. And Snaith’s love of a loop is almost in the same league as his fellow Ontarian Richie Hawtin. But where Hawtin found joy in the sheer beauty of repetition, Snaith uses his bubbling keyboard attack on All I Ever Need to underpin the fluffy shuffling vibe.
Amusingly, that song’s most alluring feature was leaving his ‘amateurish, weird and flawed’ voice drifting over the top. “I just sang a rough guide vocal to show Jessy what I wanted. But like an idiot I put the song in the wrong key for her,” he says with a laugh. “But everyone said the contrast, strangely, made the song work.”
Once again, Snaith stumbles onto the winning formula.
“my onlyintention wasto make musicthat was warmand generous”

Shabazz Palaces
That Sky Sports don’t have a dedicated channel for crazy-golf has long seemed a ridiculous oversight. Pretty much playable by anyone that doesn’t have a windmill phobia, champions will demonstrate a keen eye, a deft touch and, above all, bravery. No sane person would deny that this is, truly, the king of all sports. Sadly, there’s precious little of it in London, so the arrival of Swingers’ nine-hole crazy-golf course - even if it’s just for three months - in a 7000-sq/ft warehouse near Old Street, is real exciting news. Even better, there’s a rotating array of ace food from the likes of Pizza Pilgrims,Patty & Bun and Butchies, plus a clubhouse bar to discuss how you aced hole six, or came-a-cropper in the water on hole nine. You can book in advance, but there’s also a bunch of spaces held back for walk- ups each night. It opens at 6pm, so get there early.

SWINGERS: THE CRAZY-GOLF CLUB
Rockfeedback bring back their fantastic Illuminations series this year, marking once again the end of the British festival season. Now in its third year, they’ve once again put together a stunning line-up of our favourite acts performing in unusual spaces. From Shabazz Palaces at The Laundry, to the sparkling pop sounds of Peaking Lights at Plan B, to Liars’ gripping live show at Village Underground. For Halloween there’s a special treat planned too, with esteemed horror movie composer Fabio Frizzi playing a one-off show at the Barbican. The celebrations have expanded even further this year, with the inclusion of a Music Film Series which includes a night dedicated to MTV’s much celebrated 120 Minutes show, so we’re pretty confident when we say there’s something for everyone here.

We were jealous enough of Stoke Newington when Thurston Moore moved in, but it’s the arrival of Stokey Bear that’s going to see us spending way more time in N16. What is it? It’s burgers and it’s beers. So, what’s not to love? A permanent collaboration between burger superstar Burger Bear (you’ve gotta try that bacon jam) and the Bear Hug Brewing Co, expect all the classic Burger Bear menu, plus draught and bottled beers from the Bear Hug guys. Their brick smoke house sounds awesome too; incredible beef smoked long’n’slow over oak. September 29th // 129 Stoke Newington High St@stokeybears // @burgerbeartom // @BearHugBrewco

This brand new festival brings together a huge selection of award-winning films based around the struggles and joys of being transgender, each one providing a unique viewpoint on the subject. The films come from around the globe emphasising the variation in attitudes and outlining the similarities of an often difficult subject. With a jam packed schedule split into 3 individual programmes, including short films, documentaries and even Q&A's with the directors, the Cinema Museum is the perfect host for this exciting new film festival. TRANSGENDER FILM FESTIVAL
This year has been quite the musical reinvention for Tate Britain, including hosting a Warp records extravaganza that saw queues snaking round the building. This month the venue team-up with the PRS Music Foundation to bring an evening of audio-visual experiences, sound installations and live performances from a range of fascinating musicians and artists. We’re especially excited to see the show from Bristol producer Vessel, just make sure you head down early to really make the most of the venue and installations.October 3rd // Tate Britain, EC2A 3LS // FREE

The whole show is somewhat static and lifeless. Album highlight Bloodfloows comes just as the 'talkers' behind me are discussing where they're going after the show! That said, the skittering electronic drums and and swirling, heartfelt melody are enough to get at least the people down the front moving.I'm not sure what Sohn is trying to do with his act. On the one hand, he's presenting himself as a cloaked introvert. Stoic and refrained. On the other, his boy band-ish voice and tonight's brash lighting portrays a different image entirely. Nothing seems to fit. There's no cohesion. There's even time for a “my mum and dad are in the crowd” moment. Though there's no doubting the quality of the songs on debut album Tremors, the Sohn live experience is all together underwhelming. Lee Moroney
Sohn is swathed in what has become his trademark black hooded cloak. Shepherd’s Bush Empire's stage is littered with vertical LED lights. He sits dead centre of stage. A sell out crowd waits, pulsating with anticipation. It didn't take Christopher Taylor long at all to get to this point. Signed to the ever impressive 4AD, he’s been gigging hard in 2014. And it's that work ethic that has brought the 'bedroom producer' to this point. Riding the wave of down tempo RnB and electronica that's swept through popular music this year. On record, the sounds of Sohn work perfectly. Taylor's honeyed vocal is beautifully layered amongst water tight production. However, tonight the stuttering, broken beats and smooth vocals fall flat on the Empire's floor.

Re Est.2014
BY JOANNA GRUESOME’S ALANNA MCARDLE
On our recent US tour my band played a show in Boston where, at the hands of five guys in a mosh pit, a woman was sent to hospital needing stitches on her face; after our LA show on the same tour a man boasted on Twitter that he left with a split lip. This isn’t ‘punk’, this is unnecessary violence. Recently, people have been speaking up about sexual harassment at shows, and now the much-needed Good Night Out campaign is being launched in London to help combat this. But despite sexual harassment and violence often going hand in hand, no one seems to want to touch the latter. If you naysay then you’re just a killjoy, you don’t understand ‘the culture’. The idea that mosh pits are some sort of necessity in punk rock and indie is a macho and archaic throwback, and dismissing criticism of it comes from a place of ignorance and privilege. And yes, this behaviour is gendered. Guitar music is an especially white, male-dominated area in music, and it reflects in audiences at shows. But what about people who face violence in every other area of their life who want to find solace in live music? Why not just dance instead of risking injuring someone? I rarely go to punk shows that I don’t play anymore because I don’t feel welcome, and above all, I feel unsafe. It seems like I can’t go to a show these days without being groped, having sexist abuse hurled at me or needing to dodge flying elbows just to get a good space at the front, and it really shouldn’t be like that. It’s time for people to accept responsibility and work together towards creating inclusive, safe spaces at shows - that’s the kind of scene that deserves to call itself punk.
