• ProfJennyJarvisacquiredanewinstrumentfortattooingofhernakedmolerats.Asthisrequiredsomepractice,itwasadvertisedthathumanvolunteerswererequired.Achoiceoffourcolourswasavailable,butitwasrequestedthatletteringbekepttoaminimum.

• Studentenrolmentwasabout14,500.Justover31%ofstudentswereblackand69%white.42%offirst-yearstudentswereblack.

• DrStuartSaunderswastheVice-Chancellor.• TheJammieShuttle(initsminibusform)wasintroduced,at20caride.

• TheUCTPresswasestablished.• TheFacultyofCommercedevelopedfournewpostgraduatediplomasinmanagementandeconomics.

• Studentenrolmentwasalmost20,000.48%oftheoverallnumberofstudentswereblack,and57%offirst-yearswereblack.

• TwolargebuildingprojectsstartedwiththeconstructionofanewChemicalEngineeringBuildingonNorthLane,andfacilitiesfortheInstituteofInfectiousDiseasesandMolecularMedicineontheHealthSciencescampus.

• ThetotalnumberofresearchersratedbytheNationalResearchFoundationstoodat197,withUCThavingthehighestnumberofA-ratedresearchers(14).InthisyearthefollowingresearchersreceivedAratings:ProfessorsIgorBarashenkov,JohndeGruchy,JohnHigginsandDistinguishedProfessorPhilippe-JosephSalazar.

• ProfessorJohnHigginsoftheDepartmentofEnglishLanguageandLiteratureandProfessorLesUnderhill,DirectoroftheAvianDemogra-phyUnit,werenamedUCTFellows.

• UCTCanoeClubmemberBronwenRichardsonwonagoldmedalintheBergRiverMarathon.

• TheFacultyofEducationmovedfromUppertoMiddleCampus.

• TheBreakwaterCampuswasofficiallyopenedwhentheGraduateSchoolofBusinessmovedthere.

• UCTwasthefirstSouthAfricanuniversitytoinstituteaformalcomprehensiverecyclingschemeoncampus.Glass,paper,plasticandmetalwerecollectedforrecycling.
