SCIENCE PRESENTATION EVENING Thank you to all the families who attended the Science evening last night. It was a terrific opportunity for students to share and celebrate their learning. Students proudly shared their Biological Science projects from Term 3. NUDE FOOD DAY Congratulations to Isobella & Matilda for their successful application for the grant ‘Nude Food Day’. A special assembly was held today in recognition of their efforts and commitment to healthy eating and waste reduction. A detailed proposal was submitted, with posters designed and displayed to promote the day. Nude Food meaning NO WRAPPERS on your food. Isobella and Matilda also organised activities and certificates for students with 0 wrappers in their lunchbox. It was fantastic to see students healthy lunchboxes and their NUDE Food. A fabulous result that both girls should be proud of. Jacqueline Murray attended a special assembly to award Nilma Primary School with the Nude Food grant and to view our other sustainability initiatives.

HOMEGROUP HAPPENINGS!
The current Whole School Literacy focus is on Transactional Texts. This includes letters, postcards, emails, invitations, text messages, greeting cards and posters. We are working on a mini-project of transactional texts, starting by planning a birthday party at an exciting venue!
Some of the chosen venues include: Jump and Climb, Jump Crazy, 3 Brothers and an Oven, Village Cinemas, Adventure Park Geelong, and many more!
If you have any samples of transactional texts that your child can bring to school, it would be greatly appreciated so as to share common properties and build our understanding of these texts.
Wednesday night was our whole school
science presentation night. Last term students learning focus for science was biological science. Students in the Ruby Red homegroup incubated and hatched chickens, learning about what they needed to survive and what features they had to help them live in their environments. Students recorded the growth of the chickens and interesting notes into their ‘chick diary’ and
displayed their understandings of a chicks life cycle and recorded their favourite things about the chicks. Students were excited to share their learning and to talk about everything they learned during science last term. A huge thanks to Nikki Kimm for providing us with the incubators to hatch our chickens. Thanks to all the parents that came along and shared in their students learning.

On Wednesday we held a Science Presentation Evening where students had the opportunity to share their
Biological Science projects with family and friends. It was lovely for students to celebrate their learning about incubating, hatching and caring for baby
chicks.

Last Tuesday Louise from the RACV visited our class to talk about road safety.
When you get in a car,
truck or van you must
put your seat belt on and
tell the driver that it is
on. Blake
When you are crossing the road look carefully both ways before you step onto the road. You should not text when you are driving. Deklan
You shouldn’t do anything to distract the driver while they are driving. Jessie
There are blind spots where the driver can’t see when
they look into the mirrors. Olivia
You need to be careful when you walk behind a car because it might be reversing and the driver might not see you. Anthony
You need to be 12 years old to sit in the front seat and over 145cm high because the airbags could hit you in the face. Charlotte

Learning friendship skills is the basis of emotional
intelligence. Emotional intelligence is highly
predictive of success in work and relationships in
adult life.
Ideally children use school as a way to broaden
their relationships, and this sets them up for being
able to work with and relate to a variety of people
during their adult years.
However, becoming reliant on only a few friends
has its dangers. Most people connect and
reconnect with friends as they move through their
lives.
Learning to cope with the ebb and flow of human
relationships while remaining true to yourself gives
people confidence and courage. At times, we all
need to have the confidence to endure setbacks in
friendships and the courage to be ourselves.

‘Helping your kids help themselves’ is difficult and we can feel like we’re knocking our heads against a brick wall when it comes to own children.
Sometimes it’s an age/expectation thing that’s the problem. Can a 5 year old with long curly hair manage to keep it tidy and knot free? Or is it a realistic expectation of a parent to say of their 4 year old “I’ve shown him/her time and time again how to clean those teeth – I’m not doing it anymore! If his teeth fall out it’s not my fault and if her hair gets knotty it’s because she won’t let me brush it. I don’t care, I’m sick of yelling, I’ve done my bit, she can look scruffy. They’ll learn!”
The difficulty of being the adult is that we can no longer become childish, indignant and petulant. We have to ease and encourage the children to do things they don’t like doing. Most of us can do something we don’t like doing for just 5 minutes. It’s the same for the children.
A quick tip in these cases might be an electronic timer (microwave, stove) or even an egg timer. When your child struggles to start or do something because they don’t like the task – ask them to do it for just 5 minutes – set the timer – and then when the buzzer sounds they must stop immediately.
You may find that you need to do the same thing with them and clean your teeth together or get them to brush your hair in turn. Then they can enjoy five minutes of something they want to do and again the buzzer sounds and the activity stops.
You could turn it into a game with three different tasks – each time increasing the time by a few minutes. Be realistic though and persevere, making the time of ‘reward’ good fun and before you know it you’ll all be winners.
“…when your child is struggling to start or do something because they don’t like the task – ask them to do it for just 5 minutes.”

How parents can help children develop friendship skills
Parents can: Encourage friendships outside school. Model having a range of friends and how to
meet new people. Increase social activities for the family with a
range of people. Keep in touch with extended family members. Encourage the idea of being friends with an
array of people rather than just being close to a few people.
Consider going through a list of your child’s classmates with them and identifying the differ-ent types of friends. If someone is rejecting or ostracising them, you can explain that there is no point trying to push friendship upon people who are rejecting it. Tell your child that some-times you need to take a break—when you back off from people, they can move towards you. Try to help identify a few more people to play with and become better friends with.
