A little history -- in the olden days…
Prior to 2011, the LPDC validated
Professional Development credits
◦ for licensed Ohio teachers,
◦ who submitted paperwork once every 5
years
◦ in order to renew their teaching license
![Page 9: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Since 2011
New Broadband system asks allWSM teachers to document Professional Development
LPDC phased in non-licensed and non-tax West Side teachers
LPDC moved to yearlyreviews due to annualSalary Band meeting
We are doing our best
![Page 10: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Also in 2011 ODE made
changes ODE changed standards for educators
and LPDCs as it moved from Praxis to
Resident Educator Program
LPDC updated documents
Biggest change was the SMART goal
We adapted
… it was a very busy year!
![Page 11: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
CEU requirements set by
Broadband Committee
Over 5 years:
Band 1 – 50 hours (5 CEUs) – 10 hrs. per year
Band 2 – 80 hours (8 CEUs) – 16 hrs. per year
Band 3 – 100 hours (10 CEUs) 20 hrs. per year
Band 4, 5 and Ohio 5-year professional
license – 180 hours (18 CEUs) – 36 hrs. per year
Hours per year are average. You don’t have to do a specific amount
of hours each year. You can do a little more one year, less
another… as long as it adds up at the end of 5 years.
![Page 12: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
2013 - LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs Warning! The next 10 slides are boring.
They explain process changes we made in 2013 to meet teachers’ needs. You might want to skip those slides, unless you are pretty detail-oriented.
The point is we have worked hard to improve things, despite what you might think.
Teachers kind of dozed off during the meeting during this part. Try skipping to slide 24.
![Page 13: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
2013 - LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs
We created a new process
Teachers had the choice of moving to
new process or waiting until the end of
their 5 year plan
![Page 14: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
2013 - LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs
Teachers didn’t like that they could not
count any PD unless it applied to a
goal
Created the Explore goal
◦ to capture all In-Services
◦ and up to 2 CEUs of Professional
Development unrelated to a goal
![Page 15: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs Teachers were frustrated by
complicated and arbitrary CEU limits
on different types of activities
Took away max limits on categories
Offered training on balancing
Professional Development across
standards
This respects teachers’ different needs
![Page 16: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs Teachers were frustrated that there
were no forms to document “non-
certificate” activities
Created forms and instructions for all
valid activities, including time logs
Put them on-line and in teacher
workrooms
All the forms include a time log
![Page 17: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs Teachers often forgot to pre-approve
“independent projects”
Took away pre-approval requirement
retroactively so no one lost hours
Made up-front goal form more specific
![Page 18: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs The forms were multi-page, goals in
one section and activity log in another
section
Revised forms so it is one goal per
page
Goal on the front and activity log on
the back
![Page 19: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs Licensed teachers new to WSM, can
bring CEUs with them through
“reciprocity”. Non-tax/non-licensed
new teachers could not count anything
prior to employment.
Now non-licensed/non-tax teachers
may count college coursework or
Montessori training within a year prior
to employment
Their 5-year plan is dated accordingly
![Page 20: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs There was no training to help teachers
Last year we met with teachers one-
on-one and in small groups. There
were help sessions weekly after
school for 8 weeks in March - April.
We did two training sessions in
September and are offering more in
January 2014.
◦ The presentations are on the WSM
Intranet to look at anytime. We are
planning to add narration.
![Page 21: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
![Page 22: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
LPDC adjusts to teacher
needs Busy teachers do not have time for
“one more after-school meeting”
Teachers in Montessori Training or
who have completed requirements are
exempt from yearly review
LPDC will review your CEUs, without
you being present at review meeting
◦ Turn in documents 2 weeks in advance so
we can preview them.
![Page 23: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
To sum it up…
We’re working to meet WSM needs.
All changes in LPDC handbook
We must have a consistent rules.
We cannot change rules on the fly.
◦ We discuss new questions in committee
and decide how it best applies to
everyone.
We’re seeing progress!
![Page 24: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
It’s easier than you think
![Page 25: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
It’s easier than you think
Band 1 – 5 CEUs
10 hours per year
In-Service typically offers at least 10
hours per year
Fill all your hours through In-Service
![Page 26: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
It’s easier than you think
Band 2 – 8 CEUs
16 hours per year
10-16 hours In-Service
◦ (This year the In-Service offered 16
hours)
You can count 4 additional hours per
year that are not goal-related
During 5 years – will write 0 or 1 goal
![Page 27: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
It’s easier than you think
Band 3 – 10 CEUs
20 hours per year
Again, 10-16 hours per year on In-
Service
You can do 4 additional hours per year
that are not goal-related
You might need 0-6 more hours/year
During 5 years, might write 0-2 goals
![Page 28: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
It’s still easier than you think
Band 4, 5 and licensed teachers – 18 CEUs
36 hours per year – (yes, a workweek)
Again, 10-16 hours per year on In-Service
+ 4 hours per year not goal-related
Still need 16-22 hours per year
So, you basically need one goal per year (about 20 hrs)
◦ Implementing Educational project
◦ Serving on committee
◦ Montessori Accreditation team
◦ Mentoring, modeling
◦ Etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.,
◦ (This goal can also fulfill a leadership role, a perfectly acceptable double dip.)
![Page 29: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
You have more time than you think
Professional Day
Option for all teachers to take one paid professional day
Certificate activity or offsite observation – no prior LPDC approval needed
Something else? ◦ request in advance
◦ state specific activities
◦ Activities have to support an existing Professional Development goal
![Page 30: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Hot Spots - Committees
Professional Development must be an activity involving new learning or professional growth
Make sure you can justify how your committee work does that.
Committee can make a group goal (or you can make individual goal as a committee member)
Committee must keep attendance records and give to members as evidence
![Page 31: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Hot Spots – Educational
Projects If you’re implementing something big -
- learning & putting into action -- it’s an “Educational Project”
You must keep detailed time records
You must to present LPDC evidence of the work when it is done
Evidence must be in professional format: imagine you were sharing with your teammates or at a conference. This means a presentation, binder or portfolio.
![Page 32: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Hot spot hint:
If you hate keeping a time log…do not do activities that make you keep a time log.
Choose activities where someone gives you a certificate, like workshops, or minutes, like a committee.
Independent activities are a choice but they do take time to document hours and evidence.
They are like an independent study in school.
![Page 33: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Hot Spots – New Goals
You have a new goal
Write it (form/online)
Submit when?
Immediately
![Page 34: Lpdc december 2013 presentation](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052910/559abb841a28abca4a8b45f4/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
