What Works Collaboration Is Key
Examining Progression & Gaining Buy-In Ownership
What We Know About Guided Pathways (2015)By: Thomas Bailey, Shanna Smith Jaggars & Davis Jenkins
GuidedPathways
Collaboration Is Key
• Collaboration at all levels is critical to implementing guided pathways
• Work together to map out program pathways• Cooperating within and across departments to define
sequences of courses that students can take to fulfill program requirements
• Work together to guide, monitor, and support students as they enter and make progress along program pathways.
• Faculty must also collaborate to assess students’ mastery of learning outcomes and to improve instruction across programs, not just within individual courses, so that students build skills as they progress through the curriculum.
• And collaboration is necessary to strengthen teaching—especially in gateway courses (basic Skills) that are critical to success in particular programs.

Starting the Process: Examining & Gaining Buy InOwnership
• Colleges need to know which programs students are in, how far along they are toward completing program requirements, and when they are straying from their plans
• To begin a steering team—made up of faculty, student services staff, and administrators from across the college—who will examine (inquiry phase) the clarity of current pathways and how effectively the college monitors student progress, facilitate discussion of the need for guided pathways widely
• College data is key for GP team(s) (at all levels) to understand current status and where further inquiry is needed.

Timeline for Planning and Implementation
GuidedPathways
Follow these steps:1. Introductions2. Each team should have a bag of candy. Empty the contents and examine
each piece3. Sort the candy into clusters that make sense to you4. Discuss the process of decided the clusters for your groups.5. List the guiding principles your team used6. Once you’ve completed your sort, move around and learn about how other
teams sorted their candy7. Share out

● Behavioral economics research suggests that clustering options into similar buckets makes decision making manageable for individuals (Scott-Clayton, 2012).
Why Major Clusters?
● Goals with Clustering○ To help students choose a major
earlier in their career ○ Informed decision based their
interests, knowledge, skills and abilities
○ Empower students to select classes that relate to a specific degree
GuidedPathways
Common Elements of Major Clusters● Major Clusters are aligned with local labor
market demand. ● Each major cluster includes a clear program
map. ● General education core courses and electives
are aligned with each major cluster. ● Counseling and student services are aligned
with the student’s major cluster.

NORCO College
The College has developed four schools with the intent of helping students choose a major and degree based on their interests, knowledge, skills and abilities. The four schools are:
● Arts & Humanities● Business & Management● Social & Behavioral Studies● STEM (with subdivisions of Science & Health and Technology, Engineering & Math)
Within each School, a community of learners is created amongst students with similar academic interests.
GuidedPathways
● One of the most important things Guided Pathways offers is strategies for structural, evidence-based guided exploration that empowers students to identify relevant programs of study early.
● One of these structural elements is major clusters (in some cases referred to as cluster or interest areas).

MOR Journey Questions: Meta Majors ● 279 Faculty, Staff, Administrators
participated
● Around 70% of Faculty participated
● 120 Students participated in groupings
● 52 Total Groupings ranging from 4-12 Meta Majors
Continuing the Journey : Narrowing Down Meta Majors
● Narrowed options down from 52 Options to 10
● 5 Faculty/Staff and 5 Student
● Entire college reviewed and chose their top 3
● Students will choose in September

Guided Pathways Inquiry and Design: Degree and Certificate Sorting for Meta Majors
GuidedPathways
Can be used as an…INQUIRY TOOL to explore the concept of meta-majors or as a DESIGN TOOL when a college is prepared to create draft meta-majors
Degree and Certificate Sorting for Meta-Majors
Designed to encourage greater involvement in Guided Pathways, college-wide, by offering an opportunity for experiential learning and inter-departmental discussions.
GuidedPathways
Goal: help understand the challenges faced by students navigating the options for degrees and certificates offered by the college
Inquiry/Process Development
Involving Students -- engage students in this activity prior to designing meta majors, in order to provide faculty and staff with insights into the ways students may think about the clustering of majors.
GuidedPathways
Goal: The main goal as a design tool is to create a draft of meta majors, with supporting design principles, to be furthered developed and finalized at a later stage in the design phase.
Recommended Use: as an inquiry tool before utilizing it as a design tool
Once in the design phase it is essential to have a “critical mass” of counseling, student support and instructional faculty, administrators, and staff from across the college to ensure all stakeholders have input in the design.

Example of Design Principles Skyline College
Skyline College faculty and staff have developed a set of
design principles to guide their work:
● Agreed upon set of guiding principles that others can
use to inform their work.
● Reflect the colleges mission, vision, and values.
● Useful for addressing points of contention or
uncertainty.
