Recycling➢ as old as mankind, a common practice for most of human history➢ not popular until the World War II➢ a profession➢ the only natural resource which will grow, not decline.➢ often used as a generic term to describe the fact that waste material is used in a
manufacturing process, as a replacement for a primary production rawmaterial
➢ one of the oldest, and continues to be one of the most successful forms of materialreclamation.
SHARIF METALS INT’L

Most types of batteries can be recycled. However, some batteries are recycled more readily than
others.
• Lead-acid batteries, nearly 90% are recycled
• Button cells, because of the value and toxicity of their chemicals
• Alkaline and rechargeable batteries
These batteries include but are not limited to:-
•car batteries
•olf cart batteries
•UPS batteries
•Industrial fork-lift batteries
•Motorcycle batteries
•Commercial batteries.

own lead and cast iron foundry.

❖ Collection
The main features of the recycling process include:
▪ leaking batteries should be stored on a bunded pallet
▪ the storage place should be sheltered from rain, water sources and away from heat
▪ the ground of the storage place should have a ground cover, preferably plastic or any
other acid-resistant material, that retains any leakage and directs it to a collection
container for disposal,
▪ the storage place should have good ventilation to prevent hazardous gas accumulation,
▪ the storage place should have restricted access and be identified as a hazardous material
storage place.
The batteries are collected, separated and crushed; the Lead is smelted, then
refined.

❖ Crushing
Bigger sets of plants crush down batteries
using shredders.
It is commonly known as Battery Shredders
systems.
Once these Batteries are crushed, 4 typical
segments are generated viz. Lead Grids,
Lead paste, Separators, PP.
The Lead Grids are melted down in the gig
kettles to produce Lead directly with further
refinement.

❖ Separation
There are two hazardous components
in lead-acid batteries, which need to
be treated quite separately, the
electrolytic solution and battery
casing.
The electrolytic solution is dilute
sulphuric acid, which is a liquid and
can leak from damaged batteries.
The battery casing contains lead that
is connected to the casing and can be
recovered by suitable professionals.

❖ Smelting
Furnace is a kind of equipment that is used in process of smelting. It is basically used for
smelting process.
Smelting is a process which involves the reduction of Lead-bearing scrap into metallic Lead
in a furnace.
The product of smelting, depending on initial raw material, can be either a branded metal,
or an ingot for a further processing.
Lead Scrap Melting Furnace
Each furnace is designed and operated to produce a certain Lead product. The following
furnaces are the most common types of smelting furnaces used in the industry:
1. Blast Furnace
2. Rotary Furnace

❖ Refining
The process of removing unwanted contaminants by
various treatments carried out on a bath of molten Lead is
known as Lead refining.
In conventional Lead refining, the bullion from the
smelting unit must invariably be drossed. Drossing (or
rough drossing) is accomplished by cooling the bullion to
within 50°C of the freezing point of Lead.
Crude Lead produced during smelting operations is
remelted in cast iron kettles and refined by the addition of
reagents, such as Sulphur and caustic soda. The purified
Lead is then cast into molds or ingots.
Typically, metal from the smelting furnace is melted in an
indirect-fired kettle or pot and the trace elements are
combined to produce the desired alloy.

Environmental Impact
▪ Acid utilization and neutralization▪ A way to curb pollution - it transforms used batteries which would otherwise be considered
waste and harmful to our environment▪ Recycling of lead-acid batteries helps reduce the mining and extraction of new lead.▪ Leads toward low-carbon future = cleaner energy and greener growth.▪ Application of environmentally friendly technologies:-
➢ Desulfurization of lead paste to avoid emission of harmful SO2 and SO gases during smelting
➢ Oxygen enriched fuel during smelting for low NOX emission ➢ Direct conversion of lead paste to lead oxide bypassing environmentally costly smelting
of lead
65% - reduced carbon emission on recycled lead Saves Natural Resources Saves Energy Saves Clean Air and Water Saves Landfill Space
Recycling Preserves the Environment; The process of recycling protects the environment.

Environmental Benefits of Lead Batteries
Lead batteries and the
environment are one of
the environmental
success stories of our
lifetime.
More than 99% of all battery lead and plastic is recycled, making the lead battery the recycled
leader of all consumer products.
The life cycle of a
lead battery follows a
continuous, closed loop.
Careful preservation and
protection and management of our
natural resources will help sustain our
environment for future generations.
The typical new Lead-Acid
Battery is made with 60-80% recycled Lead and plastic.

Our Social Responsibility -Conserve & preserve the environment…
▪ People recycle to help the earth to
become a cleaner & greener place!
▪ Recycling helps sustain the
environment for future generations.
Social Impact
▪ or our future generion and the survivals of present. ▪ Creating jobs – 1.5M directly employed worldwide▪ Many communities have curbside battery recycling services to
help out and there are battery recycling centers all across the country where spent batteries can be brought.
Economical, Environmental & Social impacts…
Systematic recycling system for batteries considers all the economical, environmental and social impacts as well as the environmental norms for ourown good.
Continuous monitoring & control…
Continuous expanded monitoring and control of the other streams of therecycling system is required to ensure a toxic free atmosphere.
Sustaining present and future generations…
Battery recycling can help sustain sufficient supply of natural resources anddiminish the dangers of environmental pollution for our upcoming generationand the survivals of present.
