A Message from
Our Pastor
The devil said to him, "All this will
be yours, if you worship me." Jesus
said to him in reply, "It is written:
You shall worship the Lord, your
God, and him alone shall you
serve." - Lk 4:6a, 7-8
On this First Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading tells us
about the temptation of Christ. It is good to notice that the
Gospel pictures this happening almost immediately after the
Lord's baptism in the Jordan River. In the words of the Gospel,
"Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into
the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate
nothing during those days and when they were over he was
hungry." Now as far as I can tell, that is probably the biggest
understatement in all of the Scriptures! I know that, for myself,
just trying to observe fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday - and that is just having one main meal and two lesser
ones - is difficult enough, but trying to think of going for forty
days without any major meal is almost impossible to
comprehend. Of course, the devil wasted no time in tempting
Jesus with the simplest of temptations - a piece of bread! Can
you imagine how good that must have looked to Jesus? The
devil is no dummy; he knows very well how to tempt us. And
if he was bold enough to tempt the Lord himself, just imagine
how much more he has us on his radar scope, and how well he
knows the things that we are attracted to. The temptations of
Jesus should teach us many things...among which is how we
need to steer clear of temptations since we are not as strong as
we might think. To put ourselves in the path of temptations is
setting ourselves up for a big failure.
The cleverness of the evil one is legendary. Satan even
quoted Scripture to Jesus! But, of course, Jesus was wise
enough to hand it right back to him. Do you think any of us
would be that sharp? And even if we were, could we do that
multiple times as Jesus did? The point is that we need to avoid
temptations. Too often we let our pride get in the way by
thinking that we can overcome any temptation that comes
our way, but in reality we are setting ourselves up for disaster.
This Lent is a great opportunity to get some practice in learning
how to avoid temptations. Sometimes the best approach for us
is an indirect one. When temptations come, try to find ways to
distract yourself. Be aware of the kinds of things that tempt
you and also be aware of the kinds of things that you find
uplifting and enjoyable to think about and try to turn to one
of those when you are being tempted. In that way you can
"distract" yourself out of a temptation. So often the direct
approach, like thinking "I must get rid of this thought", can be
the worst approach since it only serves to make the temptation
stronger! If the devil is bold enough to tempt Jesus repeatedly,
we can be sure that we are seen as easy targets. Ask Jesus' help
to turn your mind to other more pleasant and uplifting things.
A blessed Lent lies before us!
Notice that Jesus “was led by the Spirit into the
wilderness.” What is a wilderness in your life to
which the Holy Spirit is leading you this Lent?
Perhaps there are uncharted areas in your marriage or
family relationships which you have avoided? In the
forty days of Lent, it is not a matter of us working on
things but God working in us. Open your heart, trust
the Spirit and spend this Lent in “your wilderness.”

BLESSING BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS The 4th Graders in
Room 213 waited in anticipation for their buddy activity
with the Preschoolers. This would be a very special event
because they pray for the homeless each and every day and
now would have an opportunity to put their words into
action. Items had been collected by the 4th Graders as well
as Preschool and Pre-K students that included bars of soap,
toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, granola bars, etc. The
students gathered in Bedell Commons and together filled
each blessing bag. After the bags had been filled, the 4th
Graders and Preschoolers prayed over the bags asking God
to care for and bless each person who will receive one. It
was a very meaningful experience for everyone.

a Daily Basis" will be presented by Fr. Thomas Dragga. We

calendars for March 30 - April 2, 2019 - we look forward

50+ COMMUNITY "The priest shall receive the basket from
you and shall set it in front of the altar of the Lord." At each
Mass a basket is brought to the altar with our monetary
gifts. But there needs to be more that is put into this basket.
This Lent is a good time to reflect on what Jesus has given
us and what we give back to Him and to one another. We
have made our Lenten resolutions: prayer, celebrating daily
Mass, attending the parish mission, receiving the Sacrament
of Reconciliation, participating in the Anointing of the Sick,
fasting, and good works may be a few personal things. But
we are also a people who form a community of believers
whose mission is to be of service to one another. We do
not walk on this Lenten journey alone. What will we do for
others? What gifts will we put into the "basket" that is
brought to the altar of the Lord at each Mass? Have a
prayerful Lent!

Reasons why I spend an hour in Adoration - Perpetual
Adoration Guardian Margaret (Peg) Galus. I love the new
Chapel, it always gives me peace of mind. I have been
visiting the Lord for years. Without Him I would never get
though my rough times. When I think of things that seem to
be to hard to handle, I think of how much God has suffered
for us. I could never come close to His suffering. Going to
my Holy Hour gives me a renewed lift to get me though my
next week. I always remember God saying “You can’t spend
one hour with me?” I think of all the things we do ...one
hour doesn’t even seem like I am giving anything.
It’s for me that I go. Just to show God, in a small way. that
I love Him. I have received blessings in my years praying at
my Holy Hour. My husband was going in for surgery with a
bleak finding and came out with the best results we could
have hoped for. Many little things occurred that have given
me hope and love for others. I pray that others can find
time to give one hour in this very confusing time. It’s the
best hour you can reward yourself with. God Bless.
Perpetual Adoration is in great need of guardians (see list
below) and substitutes. Please consider one of the hours if
not permanently, as a sub. There are great rewards waiting
for you in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Thank You.

Notes from the Blue Army: Part two of three parts of a
transcription of Fr. Johnny’s homily given in Medjugorje on
July 24, 2017. “I’d like to share with you about my last trip
to Medjugorje before I moved to Argentina two years ago.
Any of you who have ever had to move, especially a long
distance, know that you spend a lot of time throwing out
stuff that you don’t need. I realized the week before I came
to Medjugorje that my Rosary beads, which I got in the
Holy Land, were missing a bead. And I was in Medjugorje
and I was saying, “Well if there’s one place in the world
where it would be easy to get a set of Rosary beads, it’s
Medjugorje.” But I said to myself, “No, I have a set of
beads. I don’t want any more stuff to be carrying to
Argentina and I’ll stick with what I have.” And while I was
here in Medjugorje, one morning we got up very early to
visit the visionary, Vicka, and we were there at 7 a.m. She
arrived and gave a short talk, and then for an hour she
prayed in silence with all of us. As she came to begin her
talk, I met her briefly. I looked at her and said “How are
you?” She said, “I’m ok.” But I knew the way she said it, she
was actually a little weary. And I said, “Well, I’ll be praying
for you and we are all praying for you.” By the time she
finished her talk and time of prayer, I wanted to get back to
celebrate Mass at 10 a.m.. We had gotten a bus up and I got
a taxi back. I arrived in time for Mass, celebrated Mass and
afterwards went back to the house. Our guide said, “Fr.,
where did you go? Vicka wanted to talk with you. She gave
me this gift for you. She presented this gift to Our Lady for a
blessing. This gift has been blessed by a priest and Vicka
prayed, with this gift, God’s blessing upon you and upon
your life. And here it is.” And what do you think the gift
was? Rosary beads! I was very touched by that. In the
afternoon, I went to the Adoration Chapel, and I was sitting
down with my new beads and I asked the Lord, “What
message do you have for me by giving me these new
beads?” Almost immediately, the words that came into my
heart were “Every Hail Mary counts.” I was missing one
bead and the message that I was receiving from the Lord
was, “Every Hail Mary counts.” I was silenced and I was
bowled over by this awesome reality. I have meditated on
this awesome reality very often.” Remember, Every Hail
Mary counts! Come pray the Holy Rosary with the Blue
Army on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Adoration Chapel.

CAPITAL UPDATE Sanctuary Project Update - The Sanctuary
project is well underway and hopefully we will be able to
move our tabernacle back into the church very soon. The
painting bid was awarded to KKP Painting Contractors at a
cost of $3,544.00. I am sure the painting will give a nice
finish not only to the tabernacle area, but also to the wall
extending along the NW side of the church. Father Ralph
chose the color and it will be a contrasting color to better
frame the significance of the presence of Jesus in the
Tabernacle. The contractor completing the repairs needed
to add an additional $2,800.00 to the project to reinforce
the ceiling infrastructure. The total cost of project will be
$19,280.00. Thank you for your patience and prayers. Our
next project will be the updating and replacing of our
Heating and Air Conditioning system. We will be requesting
bids during the month of March and will award the contract
in April. Our goal is to have the new Air Conditioning in
place for this summer and the new boilers and ventilation
for the school installed over the summer months. Your
continued support during this time is appreciated.
