Snakebite?
It is that time of year already. They are waking up, multiplying and hungry. Just
like all of us, they are ready for some sunshine and time in the bush.
What are we likely to find in Utah, Nevada and Idaho? Snakes…..some venom-
ous and some not. Utah has 31 species of snakes, 7 of which are venomous pit
vipers. 1st piece of advice….Leave them alone and watch where you put your
hands and feet!. Most of the time people are bit trying to handle or kill a snake.
Most pit vipers found in Utah, Nevada and Idaho have rattles though not all of them rattle when disturbed. If you hear a rattle do not move until you figure out
where the sound came from. You do not want to find yourself in striking range
because you ran or jumped in the wrong direction.
What do you do if you are bitten?
If possible call ahead to an emergency room so they can have anti-venom ready
and:
Keep the victim calm, restrict movement and keep the affected area lower
than heart level
Wash the bit area with soap and water
Remove rings or constricting items that will be impossible to move after swell-
ing
Cover the bit with a clean, moist dressing to reduce swelling and discomfort
Monitor the vital signs (pulse, breathing,) and treat for shock
Get medical help as quickly as possible
Bring in the snake if it can be done safely (no need for others to be bitten try-
ing to help) If you can take a photo with a phone that could help too.
Don’t:
Let the victim walk or run
Apply a tourniquet (no longer used as first aid for anything)
Apply cold compress or ice
Cut into the bite and or try to suction the venom
Raise the bite area above heart level
Give the victim anything by mouth
Give any stimulants (coffee or alcohol fit this description) or pain
medication unless a doctor tells you to

Crescent Creek Outing
Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 21
Wagon Master TBD Crescent Creek is south of Hanksville. There is room for several
trailers plus tents for primitive camping off the highway, 4WD notrequired.
You may find accommodations in Hanksville at Whispering Sands
Motel (best reviews). The nearest food, fuel, lodging and first aid
is in Hanksville. As usual….Pack it in, Pack it out.
The closest water is a bit of a hike downhill from the claim. Very
small gold but a bit of persistence and digging in a good hole will
result in a fair bit of color.
Directions:
There are several ways to get to
Hanksville...this is just one:
Take US 15 South to US 6
east.
Follow US 6 through Price to
US 70.
Head west on US 70
Take Exit 149 and head south
on UT 24
In Hanksville turn south on UT
95 and go approx. 20.6 mi
Turn right on Lone Cedar Rd
(dirt) and head south for about
4 miles then turn right at the
fork for about 1 mile.
Trip total about 300 miles each
way give or take

Mineral Identification
Minerals are identified by evaluating a number of properties:
Color —varies depending on chemicals
Hardness – what it can scratch or whatcan scratch it
Specific gravity—how heavy comparedto equal amount of water
Refraction—how light passes through
Luster —surface appearance
Cleavage—breakage along planes
Transparency—ability to transmit light
Crystal form—natural crystal shape if able to grow freely
Tenacity—resistance to breakage
Streak—Color left when drawn acrosssomething harder
Gold
Color —Gold yellow
Streak—gold yellow
Luster —metallic
Transparency—opaque
Cleavage—none
Mohs Hardness—2.5—3
Specific Gravity—19.3
Crystal System—isometric (basically acube arrangement of atoms)
Chemical Classification—Element
Chemical Composition—Au
Mohs Scale of Hardness
The Mohs Scale of Hardness is useful as one simpletest to help identify minerals.
The Mohs scale was developed by determining whichmineral will scratch or be scratched by other minerals.
The scale is most useful for pure minerals.
A very useful chart for mineral identification can befound at:
