The End of aConventionMeans theBeginning of a
New Yearby Jim WilsonNBS-AERho ExecutiveDirector

I want to thank everyone who contributedtime and energy to make the 2010 NationalConvention possible. Many people have writtento say they got a great deal out of the event. Wehad some impressive speakers and panelists. Our survey of convention attendees will be
closing shortly. Then a survey of members whodidnt attend the convention will give thosepeople an opportunity to provide input fornext years convention. Im glad our membersare expressing what they want and dont wantat our national convention. The NationalExecutive Board and the National AdvisoryCouncil as well as many others work hard tobring you a convention with what you needand what you want. However, the conventioncannot be truly successful without your input.
The completion of a national conventionmeans its time to start a new year. Its time tosave electronic media productions and scriptsfor submission to next years contest. Its timeto start thinking ahead to the regional andnational conventions. Most importantly, itstime to start planning your local operationsfor the coming year. Next years successfulchapters are beginning planning already. If you wait to late August to start thinkingabout your regional convention production
submissions and attending your regionalconvention, you will likely miss some of thedeadlines.
If you wait to September to start recruitingyour chapter membership, you will losesome good potential members to otherorganizations. The time to plan is NOW!We should be posting the national calendar
shortly. Please take some time to get yourgame plan in order so you can begin the actionright away.
Our national convention will be locatedin an area where we have had some of ourmost exciting conventions. There will beopportunities to attend network shows, meet
Hollywood professionals, see some of the bestproduction facilities in the world, and enjoyCalifornia.
The national ofce will be shippingpromotional materials in early August tohelp your chapter recruit new members. Inaddition we will be posting recruiting materialon the website throughout the summer. Soget to work and motivate your classmates tobecome your fellow members.
On the national front, we will be making
some signicant changes in the organization. We will make an effort to keep the entiremembership involved and updated.
I believe the coming year will providenew opportunities for our chapters and ourmembers. It will be the responsibility ofthe membership to take advantage of thoseopportunities. Thats a nice generalization. Inreality its up to you to take advantage of youropportunities.

A month or so ago, at the NationalConvention in Dallas, I took over the positionof Vice President of Student Services. When Ioriginally decided that I would like to run forthis position, I was not quite sure what thejob entailed. One day, I sat down with GinaGrosso, my best friend, as well as the personholding the job at the time, and asked her whattaking on this position really meant. What she
told me really threw me for a loop because itseemed like a very big task. She said that thejob of the Vice President of Student Serviceswas to bring chapters across the nationtogether. To me, this was bafing because Ididnt know how it was possible to accomplishthis.
In my public relations class, I learned a lotabout the different forms of social media andhow they really are the future. This includesFacebook, Twitter, blogs, Myspace, Youtube, etc. These websites are forums for people allover the world to come together and I thoughtthat this would be the perfect way to connect
the chapters of the National BroadcastingSociety.
At the convention, a lot of students weresaying that it would be great if there wassomething distributed to the membersthat would give advice for fundraising orinformation about the organization in general.
As one of the producers of this newsletter,Signals Online, I immediately stated that weinclude all of that information here. Moststudents had no idea it existed. Most studentsdont spend their time browsing the NBSwebsite for updates but they do spend time onFacebook, Twitter, and blogs. I gured that ifwe were to include some of the informationand articles from Signals in a blog and link it toFacebook and Twitter, it might make students
read it. They could also leave comments, questions, or concerns directly below thearticles.
Social media really is the future and nowNBS is a part of it all. If you would like to viewthe Twitter, just search NBSAERho, and ifyou would like to view the blog, just visit theFacebook because it is linked there. Happytweeting, blogging and Facebooking!

Greetings from the East Coast! I reallyenjoyed meeting so many of you in Dallas thisyear.
Make sure to tell your Dean and DepartmentChair about any awards your chapter won.Im sure they would love to hear about yourexperiences in Dallas and I know that theywould be very happy to brag about your
awards to prospective students, alumni anddonors. Winning any type of awards at the NBSNational Convention can become a point ofpride for your school and department, so dontforget to tell them about what your chapter hasachieved.
If your chapter has a Facebook page or ablog make sure to post a bulletin about thisyears convention. Its a great way for membersof your chapter and your online communityto nd out exactly what happened at the
convention. Try to include so pictures so thateveryone can see how much fun we all had inDallas! If you school or department has a website make sure to post the same information
you posted on your Facebook page or blog ontheir site. Its a great to make sure that youcover all of the bases and will help to sureensure that information gets out to your wholeschool.
Dont forget to send thank you notes orthank you emails to everyone who helped you
get to Dallas this year. Let them know howrewarding attending this years convention wasfor you. You should also tell them about anyawards or honors your chapter earned at theconvention. Doing this will let your sponsorsand supporters know how meaningful thisexperience was for you and may make theminclined to help you and your chapter again inthe future.
Have members of your chapter who attended
our convention this year make presentationsat future meetings about their trip. This couldhelp inspire other members of your chapterto attend future conventions. Its time to startplanning for next years convention. Take theenergy and enthusiasm you had in Dallas andbring it back to your chapter. Use it as a tool tohelp motivate and inspire your chapter to startplanning for next year!

What ILearned atthe NationalConventionby Daniella Singleton
Communication Director,Millersville University

With the 68th annual National Conventionbehind us, it is time to stop and reect onmany things. Overall, I would consider theconvention a success. The area was wonderfuland new and exciting. The sessions werehelpful and I especially enjoyed the CareerFocus. I believe it would be nice to see moresmall group sessions similar to that in thefuture. This convention was a lot smaller thanprevious ones, with many less presenters. Theturnout was due to many forces out of anyonescontrol, and despite those circumstancesI believe the convention as a whole was asuccess.
The biggest lesson I took away from Dallasdidnt deal with winning, though my chapter atMillersville University managed to win awards
in four categories and earn Chapter of theYear. What I learned most at the conventionwas how in love I am with broadcasting. Thekeynote speaker the rst night, Glen Cerny, spoke about passion and love of the business. It is no joke. In order to succeed in this eld,you need to truly desire it.
Many words and tips were thrown at meagain and again during the sessions. Someof those success tips were internships, broad-ranged, diversity, versatility, and the web.
While all of those are ne and dandy, oneparticular quote stood out to me the entireconvention. During the career focus session,Bob Michaels, President of Media Sense, saidto me Living is more important than making aliving. I take this to me you absolutely have tolove what youre doing in this crazy business inorder to truly succeed.
As far as winning goes though, its certainlynot everything, but it is something. WinningChapter of the Year was such a great feeling.Never have I been so happy and proud tobe part of our chapter, to be representingMillersville University and broadcasting aswell. I think a key component to being a
Model Chapter, and in turn winning Chapterof the Year, that isnt necessarily a measuredcriterion, is pride. Pride is important in thisbusiness, and will get you far. I believe everymember of NBS should be proud to representtheir respective University and future career.Every member of the National Council shouldbe proud of all the hard work they put into awonderful convention. Everyone should beproud of NBS and the fact that it exists for usto have this great opportunity.

The convention in Dallas provided anexcellent opportunity to learn about ourindustry, to network with current andfuture professionals, to see some amazingfacilities, and to have a good time. Most ofthe students Ive spoken with said it was aworthwhile experience. Unfortunately, Ivealso heard from students who didnt attend the
convention because the economy was bad andthey couldnt afford the convention.
We do need to face some facts.1) Attending the national convention andparticipating in other NBS-AERho activitiesdoes give you a better shot at employmentafter graduation.2) The convention is not cheap and it will costmoney every year. You are spending moneybut you are investing in your future.3) Many students at other schools are in the
same situation youre in.4) There are chapters that organize andfundraise thousands of dollars so theirmembers can attend the convention.
Now is the time to organize your chapterfor fund-raising efforts over the summer andnext fall. Look to advice handed down overthe years and begin pursuing supplementalfunds now. Supplemental funds wouldinclude student activities funding requests,
departmental funding requests, and potentialgrants that may be available to you. While you are looking ahead to the national
convention, dont pass up the membershipbenets of your chapter and regional activities.Start planning now to submit materials inregional electronic media competitions. Besure your chapter is submitting materials toSignals Online so you can share your successes
with other chapters. Then be sure to read theChapter Postings in Signals Online to see whatother chapters are doing and borrow theirideas.
What can you do to continue to build yourchapter? Of course, recruiting new membersis crucial. But, brainstorm about waysyour chapter can help its members grow asprofessionals. How can you use your skillsto improve your community and raise fundsfor regional and national convention costs?Building your chapter from within will onlyincrease its positive reputation even more. How can you contribute to the First Fundcampaign? You can help bring down thenational costs with your local efforts.
Most chapters have graduating members.
(Please remind the designated member of thechapter to send in the graduation report byApril 30. If they have paid for two or moreyears of membership while a student, they willreceive one year of professional membershipfree.) Keep in touch with these people theirsuccess stories will help you recruit newmembers and increase your knowledge of theprofession.
Build on what you saw of your peers workat the national competition be motivated by
their production competition submissions andstrive to improve your writing and productiontechniques. Also, encourage others in yourchapter. Sometimes a positive word can instillthe motivation to enter the competitions. Noone has ever won a competition who didntenter it.
Finally, keep us informed and ask usquestions. Dont hesitate to contact thenational ofcers were here to help.
