In this edition we focuses on the
new trends in higher education
and its impact on workforce
development of Papua New Guin-
ea and progress of organization
and the country. Sustainable hu-
man resource development results
in sustainable organization. Pro-
gressive organization and coun-
tries have the best developed
human resource.
Papua New Guinea continue to
faces challenges and problems
especially in terms of human re-
source development of nationals.
For example this was evident dur-
ing the first LNG project where
companies involved in LNG project
have to import foreign labor into
the country. Also we continue to
face challenges in many sector of
the industry where top technical
positions and managerial positions
are currently occupied by expatri-
ates. This poses many challenges
to Papua New Guinea to find ways
to improve and develop our human
resource to have a sustainable
organization and sustainable eco-
nomic development of our country.
The challenges is both for the
government as well as the organi-
zation to come up with strategies to
develop their human resources.
Therefore both the government,
industry and higher education
sector have different to roles to
play in developing the human
resource for the country and indus-
try. The government focuses is at
the national level from primary
education to higher education. I
request the readers to read Prime
Ministers Peter O’Neill speech
during last year PNGHRI confer-
ence about the investment of the
national government on education
in Papua New Guinea. Organiza-
tion provide both in house and off
the job training such as mentoring,
job rotation and other programs to
develop the capabilities of their
employees.
Higher Education sector in Papua
New Guinea has traditionally been
set to train and develop human
capital for the industry by training
freshmen from the secondary
schools. We are now experiencing
a new trend in Higher Education in
Papua New Guinea where adult
professional’s students are enter-
ing University and college cam-
puses seeking undergraduate
degrees and post graduate degree
where traditionally focused on
young freshman students from
secondary school. Professional
without a formal qualification or
certification are now realizing that
they have to increase their capa-
bilities in order to meeting the
changes and challenges in the
current fast changing competitive
work environment.
Higher educational institutions
such as University of Papua New
Guinea, University of Technology,
Divine Word University and pro-
fessional organization such as
Papua New Guinea Human Re-
source Institute are providing
programs tailored to train and
develop the human resource of
professional working class Papua
New Guineans. Papua New Guinea
Human Resource Institute in part-
nership with University of Papua
New Guinea, School of Business
and Public Policy have provided
programs in Bachelor of Business
and Management (PS) HRM and
Masters in Human Resource Man-
agement which many profession-
als over the years have been
trained and developed. Our suc-
cess so far includes;
BBM (Professional Studies) HRM:
We have graduated 6th batch to
the industry. Over 200 students
have graduated. Masters in HRM
(MHRM): We have graduated 5th
batch to the industry. Over 100
students have graduated.
As the environment continues to
evolve where technology, eco-
nomic, demographic and social
environment continues to change
it will have an implication on the
industry, work and new competen-
cy needed by employees to become
relevant and productive. Therefore
these changes will require new train-
ings, program and way of delivery.
Thus PNGHRI continues to seek feed-
back from our stakeholder such as
students and industry to better serve
their needs. Feedback will help us
design training and programs that
are needed by HR professionals and
other executives in the industry.
Hence in our next edition of our
newsletter we will feature testimoni-
als / cases from some of our students
as well as from industries who have
benefited from our trainings and
programs. This will highlight our
success and where we need to im-
prove going into the future.
Going forward I request our former
students in both degree and post
graduate program to tell us about
their success stories after completing
the program. We would like to know:
What motivated them to take up the
program? What are some challenges
faced during the studies? How they
managed to overcome the challeng-
es? Did they enjoy the studies during
the two years? What they liked about
the program?
What impact did the program had on
them after completing the studies in
terms of their competency and job?
What are some ways PNGHRI can
improve in delivering the programs in
the future?
I ask former students to volunteer
interview by contacting our offices
and obtain pre-interview question-
naires.
Developing the human resource of
this country is a big challenge. Many
stakeholders like government, indus-
try and professional organization
have a role to play in developing the
workforce of this country. Papua New
Guinea Human Resource Institute is
contributing to the workforce devel-
opment and progress of Papua New
Guinea through its various programs
and training its offers to its members
and the wider community.

HUMAN RESOURCE IS A VITAL ASSET FOR ANY NATION BUILDING
By Michael Wolo & Paul Waona
Final Year (2017) Students—
University of PNG
Human resource is a most vital asset
for any nation building. A nation de-
pends entirely on how the human
resource performs itself in any organ-
ization, whether in public service or
private sector, said the Prime Minis-
ter, Peter O’Neil during the 2017
PNGHRI Annual Conference held at
Crown Plaza Hotel, Port Moresby.
When looking at the history of our
country and where we have come
from Prime Minister stated that,” you
and I are the first generation of Papua
New Guineans coming out from a tra-
ditional society to a modern society
we are today trying to live in.
That is why the roles that Human
Resource plays in an organization is
very crucial for the performance of
that organization and of course the
development of our nation”.
Managing people is not an easy
task when trying to get everybody
on board to achieve a common goal.
Sometimes people go to work each
day thinking that it’s just a time to go
and work for salary and have an op-
portunity to be employed but that
shouldn’t be the only reason. It
should be for a purpose that is driven
by some sense of achievements ra-
ther than just salaries and any finan-
cial benefits that we get out of a job.
Human resource and continuous de-
velopment of that is crucial to the
outcomes that we achieve by per-
forming each of the tasks. In his
speech, the Prime Minister encour-
aged conference attendants to be
proud and not to underestimate
themselves and thinking that they
are not good enough.
And he further elaborated that,” we
must remember where we are com-
ing from because we are trying to
catch up to practices around the
world that has been there for thou-
sands of years. Countries like Eu-
rope, United States and even our
closest neighbor Australia, have
been able to forge a nation and way
of systems of government in running
businesses and manage HR for hun-
dreds of years. We are doing it in
less than 40 years…less than 50
years.”
The Prime Minister was very pleased
to hear the success of PNGHRI for
providing the opportunity to a lot of
Papua New Guineans. He also encour-
aged participants at the conference to
value this opportunity the institute is
providing and the partners that they
are working together with the scholar-
ships and the expansion of the pro-
grams in education. “These are cru-
cial to the advancement of each indi-
vidual career that is ahead”, he said.
Over the past 5 years the government
has been really forceful in the manner
in which they roll out our education
program and have invested much in
education. This is because the gov-
ernment wanted to do away with the
idea of seeing drop-out as a normal
thing. In his speech Peter O’ Neil as-
sured the people of PNG that, drop out
is not a normal thing. We can’t have
kids leaving school at year 6, 8, 10 and
12 .Because these kids are too young,
some of them are very slow learners
and they start their lives learning very
slowly. While some are quick learners
they learn ahead in life a bit faster. But
that doesn’t mean that you are not
smart enough. It means that you take
your time in learning things. So the
Prime Minister realized that it’s im-
portant that the focus is given to the
schools.

HUMAN RESOURCE IS A VITAL ASSET FOR ANY NATION BUILDING
The changing face of Ela Beach - Port Moresby 2018
As the way forward, the Prime Minister
proposed to setup an endowment fund
in 2018 (this year) where this fund is
not a new thing. In fact there are simi-
lar schemes all around the world. He
rectified this project by urging partici-
pants that, many of you might not
know this but if you have heard of the
Prime Minister of Australia called
Gove Withlam. He made it possible for
every poor working class Australian
citizen to have access to education.
Even though he was Prime Minster for
3 years only, he is one of the most
popular Prime Ministers in Australia.
We ask ourselves why about 200 years
of experience, many Prime Ministers
in Australia, only one person is the
most popular. Because he invested in
the future of his children – making it
possible for poor families, working
class families having access to tertiary
education . Australians were now able
to have access to funding which was
able to educate their children and
today you will see many of the middle
class Australians who have got ter-
tiary education – are beneficiaries of
that particular scheme that Gough
Whitlam put some 50 -60 years ago.
However on other side of a coin PM
also highlighted that, critics do think
that we are spending too much mon-
ey, well what is the money there for
in the first place? The money is there
for the advancement for its citizens
and its children. And that is why in-
vestments in education and pro-
grams like the ones the institute
(PNGHRI) is doing is very important
for the nation building and also for
the advancement of the well-being of
the families of individuals in our soci-
ety. However on other side of a coin
PM also highlighted that, critics do
think that we are spending too much
money, well what is the money there
for in the first place ? Therefore to
conclude the Prime Minister re-
emphasized by saying that,” it is
important that we establish the simi-
lar opportunities for our children.
The endowment fund will be assist-
ing students in the similar manner
like what Australia did by allowing
them (students) to borrow the mon-
ey for the entire course, pay for it in
advance, get educated and over
their lifetime (repay) at zero interest
rate. If they are not employed, they
don’t have to pay it back but if they
do then they will have to pay slowly
over your lifetime because what they
reimburse will again benefit other
fellow citizens’ especially unfortu-
nate students.

12 HABITS OF SUPER-HEALTHY PEOPLE
1. Have Breakfast
It's important for a bunch of reasons. It jump-
starts your metabolism and stops you from over-
eating later. Plus, studies show that adults who
have a healthy breakfast do better at work, and
kids who eat a morning meal score higher on
tests. If a big plateful first thing isn't for you,
keep it light with a granola bar or a piece of fruit.
Just don't skip it.
2. Plan Your Meals
It'll help you save time and money in the long
run. Block out some time, then sit down and
consider your goals and needs. Do you want to
lose weight? Cut back on sugar, fat, or carbs?
Add protein or vitamins? Meal prep keeps you in
control. You know what you're eating and when.
A bonus: It'll be that much easier to skip those
doughnuts in the breakroom at work.
3. Drink Plenty of Water
It can do so many good things for you. Staying
hydrated is at the top of the list, but it may also
help you lose weight. Another reason to go for
H2O? Sugary drinks are linked to obesity and
type 2 diabetes. If you aren't a fan of plain water,
add flavour with slices of orange, lemon, lime,
watermelon, or cucumber.
4. Take an Exercise Break
Don't just grab another cup of coffee -- get up
and move. Do some deep lunges or stretches. It's
great for your body and mind. Just 30 minutes of
walking five times a week may help keep the
blues at bay. And if you can't do those minutes
all at once, short bursts help, too.
5. Go Offline
Checking your email and social media a lot?
Sure, your friends' and family's latest updates
are just a click away, but do you really need to
see pictures of your cousin's latest meal? Let it
wait until morning. Set a time to log off and put
the phone down. When you cut back on-screen
time, it frees you to do other things. Take a walk,
read a book, or help your cousin chop veggies
6. Learn Something New
New skills help keep your brain healthy. Sign up
for a dance class or a creative writing workshop.
Better yet, master a new language. The mental
work it takes can slow the signs of aging and
may even delay the effects of Alzheimer's dis-
ease.
7. Don't Smoke
If you light up, quit. It's a big move toward better
health. Your body repairs itself quickly. As soon
as 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your
heart rate and blood pressure drop. Why wait?
Kick the habit, today. Your doctor will be happy
to help you get started.
8. Sleep Well
There are almost too many benefits to list. A
good night's sleep keeps you in a better mood,
sharpens memory and focus, and helps you
learn new things. In the long term, it lowers your
risk of heart disease and helps you keep trim.
Aim to get 7 to 9 hours a night. For the best rest,
do it on schedule -- turning in and waking up at
about the same times every day.
9. Train Your Muscles
Strength training helps your body trade fat for
muscle mass. That means you'll burn more calo-
ries even when you're being a couch potato. But
these workouts can also help you slim down,
strengthen your heart, and build up your bones.
Do strength-training exercises -- like push-ups,
lunges, and weight lifting -- at least twice a week
10. Head Outdoors
A few minutes in the sunshine raises vitamin D
levels, and that's good for your bones, your heart,
and your mood. Plus, being outside means you're
more likely to move your body instead of parking
it in front of the TV or computer. Choose nature
over city streets, if you can. One study found that
people who strolled in urban green spaces were
calmer than people who walked in built-up areas.
11. Keep Your Balance
If you're young and active, good balance will help
you avoid injuries. If you're older, it will keep you
active longer and lower the chances you'll fall and
break a bone. No matter your age, good balance
means better muscle tone, a healthier heart, and
greater confidence. Yoga and tai chi are great
ways to work on it, but just about anything that
keeps you moving, even walking, can help.
12. Be Mindful
It can mean meditating or simply stopping to
smell the roses. However, you do it, studies show
mindfulness slashes stress, relieves pain, and
improves your mood. And scientists are begin-
ning to understand how. One study found that 8
weeks of regular meditation can change parts of
your brain related to emotions, learning, and
memory. Even washing dishes can be good for
your brain, as long as you do it mindfully.
Every individual must start each day
with a sense of purpose
and end each day
with a sense of accomplishment.

The changing face of Port Moresby
Many HR professionals in Papua New Guinea
don’t understand their external stakeholders. If
HR is about business then its important stakehold-
ers are the actual customer of the business.
For example, the Police department have to un-
derstand who their customers are. When they
truly understand their real customer they come
up with HR practices and innovation that will add
value to their customers that will have the biggest
strategic impact on their organization.
Finally in order to become strategic business
partners HR professionals in Papua New Guinea
must have be certified and become competent. In
Papua New Guinea, to be certified you have to
become a member of Papua New Guinea Human
Resource Institute and attend various courses and
programs we offer in order to gain the certifica-
tion to become strategic business partner. For
example PNGHRI offers Executive Development
program for Human Resource Professionals and
other executives. In addition PNGHRI in partner-
ship with UPNG offers a BBM (PS) HRM and Mas-
ters in Human Resource Management (MHRM)
program. These programs are designed to pro-
vide participants with latest knowledge and skills
in Business such as HR, Marketing, Strategy,
Finance and leadership that will help HR Manag-
ers and other executives to add value to the key
stakeholders of an organization and create a
sustainable business organization.
Therefore to become strategic business partners
HR professional must move away from performing
administrative or transactional role. They must
now align their HR practices to ensure they deliv-
er the business strategy. Today they have to look
beyond strategy and know their key stakeholders
and add value to key stakeholders such as their
customers. HR Professional must be certified and
competent in order to create value and become
strategic business partners.
In addition HR Professionals need to understand
the important stakeholders in their organization.
HR Managers in order to create more value have
to look beyond the organization strategy and
identify who are the important stakeholders of
their organization. Traditionally important HR
stakeholders were employees and line manag-
ers. HR Managers concentrated on adding value
to employee and line managers. Today the
important stakeholders are not only employee
and line managers. The important stakeholders
are also outside the organization and they are
customers, investors, government, communities
and natural environment. HR activities must
focuses on adding value to outside stakeholders
rather than internal focused. This is called out-
side-in HR. Organizations strategy is their mir-
ror. Now they have to look outside the mirror
and add value to those external stakeholders
because they ensure business succeed.
HR is not about HR but about help-
ing Business Win. HR starts with business
and ends with business claims Dave Ulrich is his
latest book ‘Victory through Organization’. The
HR role today is to help business win in the mar-
ketplace. The HRM function has today moved
away from performing a transactional / adminis-
trative role (for example maintain paper and file
and ensuring people got paid) to performing a
strategic function. HR Managers today have a
seat at the top of the table with the CEO so they
can discuss talent, culture and leadership impli-
cation of the business. HR Managers then align
their HR practices and activities to ensure the
organization have the right talent, culture and
leadership to deliver the business strategy and
achieve business goals. To do this HR profession-
als need to move away from traditional mindset,
silos and understand the organization and the
external environment. They have to understand
the various department or functional areas in
their organization such as Marketing, Finance,
Information Technology and how they add value
to the business. In addition they have to under-
stand the business context in which the organiza-
tion operates as these context shapes the organi-
zation strategy. Context such as understanding
the Technological trends, Economic trends,
Social trends or Demographic trends in which an
organization operates helps organization to set
strategy. Understanding of the environmental
context will help HR Managers to contribute to
the strategy and understand the implication of
strategy on talent, culture and leadership.
HR MOVING AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL ROLE
TO BECOMING A STRATEGIC BUSINESS PARTNER
HR Managers
in order to create more
value have to look
beyond the
organization strategy
and identify their key
stakeholder outside
their organization
The HRM funtion
has today moved away
from performing a
transactional /
administrative role to
performing strategic
business partner
role
Understanding of the
environmental context
will help HR Managers to
contribute to the
strategy and understand
the implication of
strategy on talent,
culture and leadership.
PNGHRI offers various
training programs to
certify and develop
HR professionals to
become strategic
business partners
and create
sustainable business
HR is not about
HR. HR is
about helping
business win
in the
marketplace.
