MARITIME INDUSTRY DECARBONISATION
COUNCIL
Founded in 2016 by the RBSA
Shipping industry too FRAGMENTED
VISION: bridge the gap between shipowners, charterers, shippers, equipment suppliers, shipbuilders, the research community, banks, classification societies and oil companies to ensure the development of an evidence-based policy on GHG. ->It will enable the sector to reduce its CO2 emissions in the most cost-effective way, for all stakeholders involved.
More STRUCTURE in the debate on short-medium-long term TECHNICAL measures is needed
CO2 reduction potential, Cost, Technical maturity, Scalability
What are the possibilities for existing ships and new builds?
What can we actually do for the current fleet?
Bringing INSIGHT to all interested parties in a COMPREHENSIBLE way

FOULING
Long lay time in tropical waters leads to fouling (e.g. DRY BULK)
Medium investment with a ROI of approx. 2 years
Best-in-class hull coatings can deliver savings vs. average performing coatings of up to 12-14%
Different ship types require different measures

CONTRA-ROTATING PROPELLER
Up to 22% fuel consumption improvement CLAIMED BY MANUFACTURER ?
Differences between claimed gains and real life gains for all measures
MIDC will examine claims by the manufacturer

WHALE-TAIL PROPULSION
Biomimetic propulsion: Mechanical propulsion derived in some way
from BIOLOGY are said to be biomimetic or bioinspired depending on the fidelity to the original biological system
The maximum propulsive efficiency of a whale fin has been estimated to about 85% in comparison to 50% for a traditional propeller (the possible CO2 reduction is between 17% and 25%)
MIDC looks into innovative technologies without
prejudices

Characteristics of a good alternative fuel:
Large energy density

LIQUIFIEDNATURAL GAS (LNG)
Existing ships - very high costs
Reduction of pollutants – yes
When taking into account well to propeller GHG emissions almost similar to diesel
METHANE SLIP:
Depends on engine type
more research to reduce methane slip is needed
case by case evaluation is needed
source: SINTEF Ocean AS report on GHG and NOx emissions from gas fueled engines (2017)
One kg of CH4 emitted equals 28 kg of emitted CO2!

HYDROGENInternal combustion engine
Fuel cell
Origin of hydrogen:• As a waste product from chemical
processes• from Natural gas• from renewable sources
• e.g. electricity from renewable energy to extract hydrogen out of water
Advantages:• Reasonable energy density• can be renewable or a waste product• non toxic - no waste Disadvantages: • Complicated to store in its pure form• cost

METHANOLOrigin of methanol:• from fossil sources (no CO2 reduction)• a BIO fuel when it is made from biomass• synthesize from renewable source
Advantages:• Can be used in a conventional combustion
engine with minor adjustments• Similar to LNG it's possible to use 2 (e.g.
methanol and diesel) or more fuels in the same engine when methanol is not available (Evolution of infrastructure)
Disadvantages: • Energy density smaller than conventional
fuels• If made from natural gas no CO2 reduction.

RENEWABLES
Belgium has a capacity of producing 710MW of electricity from offshore windfarms.
This equals 1/3 of the energy demand of the fleet of one of our members!
It is easier and more efficient to produce energy from a renewable source on land/offshore and then an energy carrier e.g. (methanol, battery,hydrogen,...) can be used to providerenewable energy onboard the ship.

COST OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
The cost of renewable energy is key for the development of competitive alternative GHG neutral fuels.
