of different people and you have to haul them into one philosophy and that’s Alton Post 126 philosophy, and when I walked in, they were kind of jacking around and not doing the things they were supposed to do,” Sharp said. “I just wanted to set them on edge and say, ‘You know, you guys think you’ve arrived and you haven’t.’ As I always tell my teams every year, ‘You’re the weakest team on the sched-ule (for the opposition), so you need to keep it in gear and get busy because there’s a lot of other teams out there that want to have your butt.’ Basically I walked in and they were not doing what they were supposed to do and it kind of set them on edge. … I wanted to let them know they’re starting over from zero, and there’s a lot to learn and gain if you want to play at that higher level.”
And off they went. They were part of a team that placed second in Junior Legion in 2015 and officially third, but what amounted to second place in Senior Legion at state in 2018. It’s quite the resume.
“That really kind of motivated me for basically four straight years to basi-cally try and beat that, but unfortunately, we got
second in state — well, third — in senior legion, just kind of motivated me to do better throughout those two years too,” Stilts said. “There was definitely good reason for (Sharp) to be hard on us. We wouldn’t be the team that we are now without him, and even (Saturday) when he showed up in my rough outing, there was no way I would have been able to finish a game if he didn’t show up.”
“I appreciate that com-ment,” Sharp said. “As the great Vince Lombardi said, ‘You should always practice and perform to greatness, for if you fall short, you’ll be good. But if you’re only
practicing to perform to be good, if you fall short, you’ll be fair.’ Every time we entered the facility to work out, every time we entered the field, we were about business, we were about performance and we were about each other as a program.
“I had kids through the years like (Steven) Pattan still playing at SIUE and Nick Paulda, who came back, and now he’s a police officer, (Nick) Lombardo, all kinds of great kids throughout the years. The thing I was most proud of in all the years was at the end of the season, they understood that nobody did it individually. And
Cullen, Adam, Gage and those kids, if you ever interview them, they talk about not their own self as an athlete, but how corpo-rately as a team they per-formed. Today in amateur athletics and professional athletics, there’s so much focus on the individual, and that’s killing the sport.”
Stilts was an Alton High product, so this was basically home for him. McBride was a Staunton High kid, and Booten came from Wood RIver, so both had to incorporate them-selves into the fabric of Alton legion baseball.
Stilts and McBride are the best of friends, and it
was Stilts who got Sharp to look at some kids from the Staunton community and the rest became history.
“I can’t thank him (Stilts) enough because this is like nine years together,” McBride said. “Back when I came to play with Bluff City, I wouldn’t be playing over here. Who knows? Kids from Staunton historically have been going over to Highland to play legion ball (Blaine Ray and Aus-tin Gusewelle). Those guys, I know them real well and they went over to Highland and were lov-ing it, but I know myself, Ryan Best, Griffin Bianco, we’ve got Riley Bernot from Gillespie. Coming over there and playing for Bluff City in that last year, that gave us that avenue to meet Dennis and for him to get that look at us … he was watching us for I don’t know how long, and so with that being said, Highland didn’t know anything about us, so they signed off on all of us and led to a great time, and I can’t thank somebody like (Stilts) enough and Dennis and them for just giving us an opportunity to come down here and play.”
Sharp said it was an easy call, and one that encapsu-lated a great foundation of parents.
“Bear Bryant always said, ‘I don’t interview the athlete, I interview the par-ent,’” Sharp said. “These kids come from very good
families. When you’re pull-ing kids and they have good, sound values at home and the parents are honest with the kids, they’re not sugar-coating themselves as athletes, then you have a product you can work with. I saw these kids, they came from good families and the parents were down to earth and they grounded these kids. I don’t have a problem with that because now we can do some good things because I know the parents are going to be reflective, the parents are going to be honest and they’re going to tell the kids the truth. So much of the time when you’re dealing with athletes and they aren’t getting the truth or get a dose of the truth, you end up being the person that tells them the truth. Then they go home and whine and cry to mom and dad and then I’m the bad guy when in fact, the parent should have been honest. They should have said, ‘Maybe you need to work harder,’ or, ‘this isn’t your skill level,’ or, ‘you need to be putting in more time,’ whatever it is, but most of the time, they don’t want to be the par-ent. They don’t want to be the bad guy, they want to be the friend. That’s what’s made it so difficult, and I think that’s why a lot of these select programs have flourished because if you pay me enough money, I’ll tell you what you want to hear, and that’s what’s going on.”

the Blues, who are looking to win back-to-back titles. The last team to do so was Pitts-burgh in ’15-16 and ’16-17.
“Obviously, last year gave us a lot of experience from top to bottom in the dressing
room,” said Jordan Binning-ton, the goaltender who came up clutch for the Blues last season as a rookie. “Hopefully we can use that going into this year.”
GOALIE SITUATION Colorado coach Jared
Bednar has a predicament: Go with the experience of Grubauer in net or Pavel
Francouz, who had the lower goals-against average.
“That’s a good problem to have,” Bednar said. “We have a lot of confidence and both guys have played real well for us throughout the course of the regular season.”
BABY ON THE WAY Blues forward Ivan Barba-
shev is set to become a dad in
August. The birth of a child is among the reasons an NHL player can leave the bubbles in Edmonton and Toronto. The player will be quarantined upon their return and needs to pass a series of COVID-19 tests.
“I understand it’s really hard for her, to see me going away when the baby is due, but I promised her I’ll be back,”
Barbashev said.
RETIRED In June, Blues forward Chris
Thorburn announced his retire-ment after a career that includ-ed 801 NHL regular-season games and hoisting last sea-son’s Stanley Cup. The physical forward also played for Buffalo, Pittsburgh and the Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets.
