Volume 20 PENTECOST May 31, 2020
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
On May 3rd the Universal Church observed the annual “World Day of Prayer for Vocations”. The intent of the “World Day of Prayer for Vocations” is to fulfill the Lord's teaching to Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). As a prayer that is continually offered throughout the Church, it affirms the importance of faith and grace in all that concerns vocations.
While appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention on this day on vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and permanent diaconate), to the Religious life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership, and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission "ad gentes", that is, “to the nations”, to those who did not know Christ—and to proclaim the Gospel. Because the Apostles were faithful and obedient to Christ’s command, His Church has grown and flourished.
On this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, I hope that many of you joined in prayer and asked the Lord to help us discover His plan of love for our lives and to grant us the courage to walk in the path that He has chosen for each of us.
It is not always easy to discern our vocation and to steer our life in the right direction. For this reason, there needs to be a renewed commitment on the part of the whole Church–clergy, religious, pastoral workers, educators, parents, friends and family–to provide young people in particular with opportunities for listening and discernment.
Deacon Jim Sponder
Please join me in praying for all those who serve in our Parish - Mary, Mother of Divine Grace:

WE NEED YOU TO HELP US RE-OPEN OUR CHURCHES!
We need volunteers to assist with various aspects of our parish reopening plan. Importantly, the Archdiocese requires that all volunteers be 65 or younger and free of any medical condition that would place you at greater risk to contracting the Covid-19 virus.
I ask all of you who meet the above criteria to assist Mary, Mother of Divine Grace in our effort to reopen and celebrate some of the important Sacraments that define our faith. Your help is not only critical to the success of our reopening, but essential to this Parish’s mission. Together we will succeed.
Please consider volunteering with one of three reopening teams:
Set-up Team: Sample duties include ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and
propped physically open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, etc.
Greeting Team: Sample duties include assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering,
are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas, etc.
Cleaning Team: Sample duties include maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas
of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if you do not have your own, in addition to approved cleaning/
disinfecting supplies.
Please send us a message at [email protected] to indicate your willingness and ability to volunteer. In the email please include your phone number and availability (either weekdays, weekends or both).
Timing for Our Reopening
In order for us to reopen, we must establish and train the above teams. We hope to have that accomplished as soon as possible, again, the need for your assistance cannot be overstated. We will only open once the Reopening Leadership Team and I feel confident that we have the right volunteers in place and trained. Your safety is primary concern.
The reopening tasks and measures required to reopen are designed to protect our wellbeing and that of our broader community. A certification of readiness to reopen will be required by the Archdiocese of each parish at each reopening phase. Each parish is to complete an implementation template confirming completion of all action steps and demonstrating that there are a sufficient number of trained volunteers to execute the reopening plan prior to reopening.
As Cardinal Cupich has noted, from the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper.” Our Lord Jesus Christ prayed, “that they all may be one” (Jn 17:21) and commanded us “love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (Jn 13:34). Our collective patience, willingness to help and the care we take to reopen is a demonstration of our unity and love for one another.
May God grant you His peace during this difficult time and may He manifest His love and presence to you in abundant ways.
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Karen Luciano at 708-562-3364 or by email at [email protected].
Thank you and God Bless you, Fr. Marcin
WE CANNOT DO THIS ALONE. WE NEED YOUR HELP.

THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT
Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of differ-ent languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God. Because we can’t go to Mass…
Catholics are encouraged to make a “spiritual communion”. St. John Paul II writes that “it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of practice of “spiritual communion” which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. Saint Teresa of Jesus wrote: “When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by the love God will be greatly impressed on you”” (Ecclesia Eucharistia, no.34).
Catholics are also encouraged to watch local TV for Sunday Mass. Mercy Home celebrates Mass every Sunday at 9:30am on WGN, Chicago.
Our parish website; www.marymotherofdivinegrace.org has a link to Masses recorded at Divine Infant Jesus Church and Divine Providence Church. There are also links to the Cardinal’s Masses.
This week Fr. Joyce will be celebrating Pentecost on May 31, 2020.
If you can’t go to church, BE the Church.
“The Church is like a great ship being pounded by the waves of life’s different stresses.
Our duty is not to abandon ship, but to keep her on her course.”
-St. Boniface
May 31 PENTECOST
Comprehension of speech is pretty much dependent on two people: the speaker and the listener. Even if the two speak a common language, the listener may have difficulty understanding if the speaker has a heavy accent. This dynamic comes into play in Luke’s account of the Pentecost. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the disciples were able to speak in different tongues. This attracted people from over a dozen regions, each one able to hear them “speaking in their (own) tongues of the mighty acts of God” (Acts 2:11). In order to comprehend what they were hearing, they must have overcome the difficulty of understanding someone speaking their own language with a foreign accent. After all, even with the disciples inside a house the crowd recognized their voices as Galilean, which we know was a distinctive accent because it had given Peter away when he denied knowing Jesus. Yet they were still able to comprehend the meaning of their words. Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians lists some examples of the different gifts of the Holy Spirit brings, including both “varieties and tongues” and “interpretation of tongues” (1 Corinthians 12:10). Speaker and listener are each blessed by the Spirit. May the Holy Spirit bring us insight and comprehension as we listen to the word of God.
How does the Holy Spirit help you to hear, understand, and express God’s word?
